The purpose of this study was to find out the effects of children's elementary school entrance age and sex on cognitive and social abilities. The subjects were 80 the same number was slected by elementary school entrance age(5-year and 6-year) and sex. Their cognitive and social abilities were measured by Intelligence Maturity Test and Revised Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales. The data were statistically analyzed including descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis of variance. The results were as follows: 1) 6-year-old children had higher perceptive ability of sameness and calculation ability than 5-year-old children. Girls also had higher IQ and language concept than boys, 2) 6-year-old children's communication socialization and total social ability were higher than those of 5-year old children Girls' communication and total social ability were higher than those of boys. The implication was that it would be important to consider children's social ability if their entrance age were decided. In addition Early Entrance to Elementary School system should be reconsidered in the point of childer's developmental adaptation.
The purpose of this study is to examine the factors that are associated with a child's development within a multi-cultural family, taking into account the factors that influence the child's language ability and their play interactions with their mothers. First, there was no significant difference in the children's language ability based on the child's gender, or based on the language in which the mother communicated with her children. However there were significant differences depending on the children's age, the mother's native country, and the period of time the mother had lived in Korea. Second, there was no significant difference in the child-mother play interaction based on the children's age, gender, the mother's native country, the period of time the mother has lived in Korea, or the language in which the mother communicated with her children. However, the boys showed a more hostile attitude toward their mothers, in comparison to the girls. In conclusion, it can be said that there is an urgent need for comprehensive social support services and policies for the overall development of multi-cultural children, especially through programs for children and mothers.
Objective: This study investigated whether executive function has a significant relationship to concrete, picture, and language clue tasks of the arithmetic story problem-solving ability, and its effects. Methods: The participants in the study were 112 young children at childcare centers. The following methods were used to evaluate executive function: Day-Night/Flag-Raising tasks, DCCS tasks, and digit span-reverse digit span methods. To measure the arithmetic story problem-solving ability concrete, picture, and language clue tasks were evaluated. Results: First, the higher the child's age, the higher their executive function and arithmetic story problem-solving abilities were. Second, there is a significant positive correlation between a young child's executive function and arithmetic story problem-solving ability. Third, when the task presentation method varied for concrete, picture, and language clue tasks, the effect of the subordinate factor of the execution function of the arithmetic story problem-solving ability also varied. Conclusion/Implications: Analysis confirmed the relationship between young children's executive function and arithmetic story problem-solving ability. The results are meaningful in showing that the sub-factors of the executive function have different influences on concrete, picture, and language clue tasks of the arithmetic story problem-solving ability.
In the present study, the production of grammatical morphemes of Korean-speaking children with and without developmental language impairments was investigated. Ten children with language impairments (LI) (CA: 4; 4-6; 11, LA: 3; .6-5; 10) and 10 normal children (CA: 3;1-6;3, LA: 3;5-5;11) with matched language abilities participated in the study. Sixty pairs of pictures were used to elicit 12 types of predetermined grammatical morphemes. The two pictures of a pair were designed to elicit two sentences of the same sentence structure. After the investigator described one picture of a pair, the children were asked to describe the other picture. The LI children made more errors than the normal children in the production of 6 types of grammatical morphemes including: locative case marker, dative case marker, two connective endings of predicates representing cause and goal, and suffixes for passive and causative verbs. However, the LI children produced some grammatical morphemes as accurately as. the normal children. The two groups were similar in their error patterns. Some explanations for Korean-speaking LI children's use of grammatical morphemes were suggested.
The purpose of this study was to review the current language level of children from multi-cultural background and whether the language level of these children would be increased after participating in the 'We Start Language Intervention Program'. The subjects were 30 36-75-month old children attending daycare centers in Ansan city, South Korea. The results showed that the receptive and expressive language levels of children from multi-cultural families were low compared to those of other children, and that their expressive language level was evaluated more negatively than their receptive language level. After participating in the 'We Start Language Intervention Program', language test scores, language age and language percentile rank were all increased. It was also found that the developmental language level of multi-cultural children increased, and that of the children that had a language delay or language disorder decreased.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of advertisement-making activities on young children's language ability and creativity. The subjects of this study were 47 five-years-old children from child care center located in Gwangju City. The collected data were analyzed by idependent t-test using SPSS Program. The results of this study were as follows; First, experimental group which conducted the advertisement-making activities showed significantly higher improvement in sub-factors of language abilities, common sense, comprehension, vocabulary ability, commonness than comparative group. Second, experimental group which conducted the advertisement-making activities showed significantly higher improvement in sub-factors of creativity, fluency, uniqueness, elaboration than comparative group. It means that the advertisement-making activities improve young children's language ability and creativity.
Background: Humidifier disinfectant exposure is an ongoing issue, and there is still considerable related controversy. Various approaches are needed to secure scientific evidence on the extent of the victims' damages and for the determination of appropriate compensation. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the association between humidifier disinfectant (HD) use and academic achievement in Korean children. Methods: This study used data from the 8th Panel Study on Korean Children in 2015. For the final study, 1,598 cases were used. T-tests and multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to determine whether the use of humidifier disinfectant is a factor that affects academic ability. Results: Children in groups using humidifier disinfectant showed statistically significantly lower scores in all areas of language, including reading, speaking and writing, and statistically lower scores in all areas of mathematics, including counting, addition and subtraction. In the multiple regression analysis results, which control for the effects of various demographic/social variables, the use of humidifier disinfectants showed statistically significant beta coefficients (β: -0.357, p<0.001), negatively affecting children's language ability. As for the 'math' variable, which was created by combining counting, addition, and subtraction scores, the use of humidifier disinfectants as independent variables also showed statistically significant beta coefficients (β: -0.200, p<0.001), negatively affecting children's math ability. Conclusions: The results of the study showed that depending on whether or not humidifier disinfectants were used, there are differences in children's language abilities, such as reading, speaking, and writing, as well as in their mathematical abilities, such as counting, adding, and subtracting numbers. These findings are thought to serve as a scientific basis for extending the perspective from health effects to more diverse areas of demographic and social impact related to humidifier disinfectant damage and compensation.
The purpose of this study is to compare the complexity of language level between verbally-precocious and typically-developing children from 2 to 3 years-old. Participants were 15 children classified as verbally-precocious were scored at the mean 56.85(expressive language) and 88.82(receptive language), and another 15 children classified as typically developing did at the mean 33.51(expressive language) and 58.01(receptive language) on MCDI-K. Each child's spontaneous utterances in interaction with her caregiver were collected at three different times with 6 months interval. All of the utterances were transcribed and analyzed for the use of MLU and lexical diversity by using KCLA. Summarizing the overall results, verbally-precocious children had significantly higher language abilities than typically-developing children at each time, and there were significant differences between two groups in syntactic and semantic language development, showing that verbally-precocious children indicated distinctive MLU and lexical diversity. These results suggest a high degree of stability in precocious verbal status, with variations in language complexity during conversations contributing to later differences in their language ability.
The subjects of this study on the effects of teacher intervention in sociodramatic plays were 54 five-year-old children from 2 public kindergartens in C city. Socioeconomic stasus and, aside from teacher interventions, educational procedures were the same for both the experimental group(28 subjects) and the control (26 subjects) groups in both schools. Instruments were the Social Play Rating Scale(Smilansky & Shefatya, 1990), Social Situations Measure(McGinnis & Goldstein, 1990), and Language Ability Test(Chang, 1981). Procedures included pretest, 14 weeks treatments and post-test. Data were analyzed by t-test. Results indicated significant differences in social play levels between the experimental and control groups, (b) including differences in such general social skills as emotional control and relationships with others. There were also differences in language ability, including such subordinates as language understanding and expressive abilities.
Objective: This study was aimed to analyze the effects of activities using picture books for young children's language development and to identify factors that caused differences in these effects by applying meta-analysis. Methods: We conducted a homogeneity test of effect sizes on 21 Korean studies published in academic journals from 1990 to February 2018 and calculated the effect size by applying a random effect model. Additionally, we conducted a meta-ANOVA to investigate whether the effect sizes differed by types of language development, picture book activities, and environmental variables-such as place, time, and agent. Results: The results indicated that the effect sizes of the 21 studies were heterogeneous and the total effect size was 0.90, which was significantly large according to Cohen's standard. The effect sizes also varied by types of language development, picture book activities, and environmental variables. Conclusion/Implications: To increase the effects of activities using picture books for young children's language development, this study suggested the importance of picture book activities to be integrated with other play areas, teaching methods, and other print materials for the development of literacy abilities, and the link between home and early childhood education institutions.
