  • This paper is about a progressive fracture analysis of concrete by boundary element method. From both displacement boundary integral equation and traction boundary integral equation of solids with cracks, a boundary integral equation for crack problem is derived. For the analysis of progressive fracture of concrete, fracture process zone is modelled based on Dugdale-Barenblatt model with linear tension-softening curve. By using the boundary element modeling, the progressive fractures of concrete beam and compact-tension specimens with various loading conditions are analyzed and compared with experiments. The analysis results show that the technique in this paper can predict the maximum strength and the nonlinear behavior of concrete including post-peak behavior.

  • We present a robust and accurate boundary condition for pricing financial options that is a hybrid combination of the payoff-consistent extrapolation and the Dirichlet boundary conditions. The payoff-consistent extrapolation is an extrapolation which is based on the payoff profile. We apply the new hybrid boundary condition to the multi-dimensional Black-Scholes equations with a high correlation. Correlation terms in mixed derivatives make it more difficult to get stable numerical solutions. However, the proposed new boundary treatments guarantee the stability of the numerical solution with high correlation. To verify the excellence of the new boundary condition, we have several numerical tests such as higher dimensional problem and exotic option with nonlinear payoff. The numerical results demonstrate the robustness and accuracy of the proposed numerical scheme.

  • When the magnetotail is disturbed by an impulsive input such as the substorm onset, compressional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves play an important role in delivering perturbed energy and exciting various wave modes and currents. The plasmasheet, in which relatively hot plasmas exist, is surrounded by relatively cold plasmas at the plasma sheet boundary layer (PSBL) and the equatorial plasmasphere. Since the Alfven speed significantly varies near these regions, the compressional waves are expected to undergo mode conversion by inhomogeneity at the boundary between cold and hot plasma regions. We investigate how the initial compressional MHD wave energy is reflected, transmitted, and absorbed across that boundary by adopting the invariant imbedding method (IIM) which gives the exact reflection, transmission, and absorption coefficients without any theoretical approximations for given frequencies and wave numbers. The IIM method is very useful in quantifying the reflection and transmission of compressional waves in the sense that we can calculate how much fast mode wave energy is delievered into shear Alfven waves or field-aligned currents. Our results show that strongly localized absorption occurs at the boundary region. This feature suggests that localized field-aligned currents can be impulsively excited at such boundary regions by any compressional disturbances, which is highly associated with impulsive auroral brightening at the substorm onset. We compare our results with previous studies in cold inhomogeneous plasmas.

  • When finite length signal is the input of QMF banks which are composed of the M-band orthogonal wavelet filter, the boundaries of reconstructed signal are not reconstructed perfectly. For boundary signals to be reconstructed perfectly, different type filters or methods are applied to them. In this paper, the design method of boundary filters which can be reconstructed the boundary signal perfectly was proposed, in case the dimension of M-band decomposed signal is the same as that of input signal. The boundary filters were designed using the perfect reconstruction condition of paraunitary matrix. In an application of subband coding of still image, the proposed boundary filters achieve better PSNR about 5% in reconstructed image than reflected method at the same bit rate.

  • One of the major difficulties in the seismic analysis of a dam-reservoir system is the treatment of the energy radiation in the upstream direction of the reservoir. In the paper, a new transmitting boundary is presented that can model properly the radiation of energy in the far field direction of a semi-infinite reservoir with constant depth. In the newly developed method, effects of surface wave motion are taken into accounted and the reservoir-foundation interaction is approximately accounted for with an absorbing boundary condition. If a dam has vertical upstream face and the infinitely long reservoir maintains constant depth, then the proposed transmitting boundary can be directly coupled with the model of dam body. In present study, the dam body is assumed to behave elastically and modeled by finite element method. Seismic responses of a dam model are investigated using the newly developed transmitting boundary.

  • A new boundary treatment technique which can be applied to axi-symmetric topography with inclined bottom was developed. Although the finite element method is good for complex geometry, there is no proper boundary treatment when a boundary is not a vertical section because the water depth at the coastline becomes zero. In this study, we developed a new boundary treatment for inclined bottom using the analytical solution for long wave. To develope a model, the mild-slope equation was used and then, a computational domain is divided into an analytical region and a numerical region. By combining a numerical and an analytical solutions, a complete solution was obtained. The developed solution was validated by comparing with a previous analytical solution.

  • Nonlinear free surface flow phenomena have teen studied by several kinds of numerical methods, of which boundary element method has been known as most promising one. There, however, remain many difficulties to be solved in the numerical procedures by boundary element analysis. In this paper, an efficient calculation of elemental integrals and iterative solution algorithm for the resulting system of equations were thoroughly investigated in order to enhance the procedure of the boundary element analysis. Advantages of the herein developed boundary element analysis code are demonstrated in terms of accuracy and convergence for typical boundary-value problems with free surface.

  • The classical snake algorithm has a problem in detecting the boundary of an object with deep concavities. While the GVF method can successfully detect boundary concavities, it consumes a lot of time computing the energy map. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to reduce the computation time and improve performance in detecting the boundary of an object with high concavity. We define the degree of complexity of object boundary as the local curvature. If the value of the local curvature is greater than a threshold value, new snake points are added. Simulation results on several different test images show that our method performs well in detecting object boundary and requires less computation time.

  • TiN has been investigated as a good candidate for a diffusion barrier of Cu. Therefore, in this study, the grain boundary diffusion of Cu in TiN film was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). In general, TiN has a columnar grain structure. In the relatively lower temperature, less than 1/3 of the melting point, it was observed that Cu diffused into TiN mainly along the grain boundaries of TiN. The grain size of TiN was measured by atomic force microscope (AFM). In order to estimate the grain boundary diffusion constants, we used the modified surface accumulation method. The activation energy, $Q_b$ was 0.23 eV, and the diffusivity, $D_{bo}$ was $5.5\times10^{-12{\textrm{cm}^2$/sec.

  • In this paper we introduce a new circle detection algorithm for occluded on/off pupil and iris boundary extraction. The proposed algorithm employs 7-step processing to detect a center and radius of occluded on/off eye images using the property of the chords. The algorithm deals with two types of occluded pupil and iris boundary information; one is composed of circle-shaped, incomplete objects, which is called occluded on iris images and the other type consists of arc objects in which circular information has partially disappeared, called occluded off iris images. This method shows that the center and radius of iris boundary can be detected from as little as one-third of the occluded on/off iris information image. It is also shown that the proposed algorithm computed the center and radius of the incomplete iris boundary information which has partially occluded and disappeared. Experimental results on RGB images and IR images show that the proposed method has encouraging performance of boundary detection for pupil and iris segmentation. The experimental results show satisfactorily the detection of circle from incomplete circle shape information which is occluded as well as the detection of pupil/iris boundary circle of the occluded on/off image.
