  • This paper proposes a simpler solution to the stabilization problem of a special class of nonlinear underactuated mechanical systems which includes widely studied benchmark systems like Inertia Wheel Pendulum, TORA and Acrobot. Complex internal dynamics and lack of exact feedback linearizibility of these systems makes design of control law a challenging task. Stabilization of these systems has been achieved using Energy Shaping and damping injection and Backstepping technique. Former results in hybrid or switching architectures that make stability analysis complicated whereas use of backstepping some times requires closed form explicit solutions of highly nonlinear equations resulting from partial feedback linearization. It also exhibits the phenomenon of explosions of terms resulting in a highly complicated control law. Exploiting recently introduced Dynamic Surface Control technique and using control Lyapunov function method, a novel nonlinear controller design is presented as a solution to these problems. The stability of the closed loop system is analyzed by exploiting its two-time scale nature and applying concepts from Singular Perturbation Theory. The design procedure is shown to be simpler and more intuitive than existing designs. Design has been applied to important benchmark systems belonging to the class demonstrating controller design simplicity. Advantages over conventional Energy Shaping and Backstepping controllers are analyzed theoretically and performance is verified using numerical simulations.

  • This paper proposes a robust adaptive fuzzy backstepping control scheme for trajectory tracking of an electrically driven nonholonomic mobile robot with uncertainties and actuator dynamics. A complete model of an electrically driven nonholonomic mobile robot described in this work includes all models of the uncertain robot kinematics with a nonholonomic constraint, the uncertain robot body dynamics with uncertain frictions and unmodeled disturbances, and the uncertain actuator dynamics with disturbances. The proposed control scheme uses the backstepping control approach through a kinematic controller and a robust adaptive fuzzy velocity tracking controller. The presented control scheme has a voltage control input with an auxiliary current control input rather than a torque control input. It has two FBFNs(Fuzzy Basis Function Networks) to approximate two unknown nonlinear robot dynamic functions and a robust adaptive control input with the proposed adaptive laws to overcome the uncertainties such as parameter uncertainties and external disturbances. The proposed control scheme does not a priori require the accurate knowledge of all parameters in the robot kinematics, robot dynamics and actuator dynamics. It can also alleviate the chattering of the control input. Using the Lyapunov stability theory, the stability of the closed-loop robot control system is guaranteed. Simulation results show the validity and robustness of the proposed control scheme.

  • In this study, an robust adaptive backstepping controller is proposed for the speed control of separately excited DC motor with uncertainties and disturbances. Armature and field resistance, damping coefficient and load torque are considered as uncertainties and noise generated at applying load torque to motor is also considered. It shows that the backstepping algorithm can be used to solve the problems of nonlinear system very well and robust controller can be designed without the variation of adaptive law. Simulation and experiment results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller in the future.

  • In this paper, we address the robust adaptive backstepping controller using fuzzy neural network (FHIN) for a class of uncertain output feedback nonlinear systems with disturbance. A new algorithm is proposed for estimation of unknown bounds and adaptive control of the uncertain nonlinear systems. The state estimation is solved using K-fillers. All unknown nonlinear functions are approximated by FNN. The FNN weight adaptation rule is derived from Lyapunov stability analysis and guarantees that the adapted weight error and tracking error are bounded. The compensated controller is designed to compensate the FNN approximation error and external disturbance. Finally, simulation results show that the proposed controller can achieve favorable tracking performance and robustness with regard to unknown function and external disturbance.

  • In this paper, we propose a direct robust adaptive backstepping speed controller for induction motors system. A robust adaptive backstepping controller is designed using high order neural networks(HONN), which avoids the singularity problem in adaptive nonlinear control. The stability of the resulting adaptive system with proposed adaptive controller is guaranteed by suitable choosing the design parameter and initial conditions. HONN are used to approximate most of uncertainties which are derived from unknown motor parameters, load torque disturbances and unknown nonlinearities. The applicability of the proposed scheme is tested simulation.

  • A harmonic drive is compact torque transmission device with no backlash which is widely applied in industrial field to transmit torque precisely. However, one of the disadvantages of harmonic drives is the existence of mechanical flexibility caused by its structural properties, which imposes great limitation on designing precise controller This paper proposes a nonlinear controller for synchronous operation of DC servo-motors with harmonic drive, using Integrator Backstepping method. Furthermore, an alternative algorithm for serial type synchronous operation of multiple DC servo-motors is proposed. Simulation results by SIMULINK for proposed controller shows considerably small error and rapid approach to reference input, which can be adapted to industrial applications.

  • Nowadays, electro hydrostatic actuator (EHA) has shown great advantages over the conventional hydraulic actuators with valve control system. This paper presents a position control for an EHA using a modified back stepping controller. The controller is designed by combining a backstepping technique and adaptation laws via special Lyapunov functions. The control signal consists of an adaptive control signal to compensate for the nonlinearities and a simple robust structure to deal with a bounded disturbance. Experiments are carried out to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

  • An adaptive neural controller for perturbed strict-feedback nonlinear system is proposed. All the previous adaptive neural (or fuzzy) controllers are based on the backstepping scheme where the universal approximators are employed in every design steps. These schemes involve virtual controls and their time derivatives that make the stability analysis and implementation of the controller very complex. This fact is called 'explosion of complexty ' since the complexity grows exponentially as the system dynamic order increases. The proposed adaptive neural control scheme adopt the backstepping design procedure only for determining ideal control law and employ only one neural network to approximate the finally selected ideal controller, which makes the controller design procedure and stability analysis considerably simple compared to the previously proposed controllers. It is shown that all the time-varing signals containing tracking error are stable in the Lyapunov viewpoint.

  • In this paper we consider the problem of global finite-time stabilization for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems which include uncertainties. The uncertainties are time-varying disturbances or parameters belong to a known compact set. The proposed design method is based on backstepping and dynamic exponent scaling using an augmented dynamics, from which, a dynamic smooth feedback controller is derived. The finite-time stability of the closed-loop system and boundedness of the controller are preyed by the finite-time Lyapunov stability theory and a new notion 'degree indicator'.

  • This paper presents a state feedback based backstepping control algorithm to address the trajectory tracking problem of an underactuated Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) in the horizontal plane. A nonlinear three Degree of Freedom (DOF) underactuated dynamic model for USV is considered, and trajectory tracking controller that can track both curve trajectory and straight line trajectory with high accuracy is designed as the well known Persistent Exciting (PE) conditions of yaw velocity is completely relaxed in our study. The proposed controller has further been enriched by incorporating an integral action additionally for enhancing the steady state performance and control precision of the USV trajectory tracking control system. Global stability of the overall system is proved by Lyapunov theory and Barbalat's Lemma, and then simulation experiments are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the controller designed.
