The potential curves of OH bonds of liquid water are inhomogeneous because of a variety of interactions with other molecules and this leads to a wide distribution of vibrational frequency which hampers our understanding of the structure and dynamics of water molecules. Mixed quantum/classical (QM/CM) calculation methods are powerful theoretical techniques to help us analyze experimental data of various vibrational spectroscopies to study such inhomogeneous systems. In a type of those approaches, the interaction energy between OH bonds and other molecules is approximately represented by the interaction between the charges located at the appropriate interaction sites of water molecules. For this purpose, we re-calculated the values of charges by comparing the approximate interaction energies with quantum chemical interaction energies. We determined a set of charges at the TIP4P charge sites which better represents the quantum mechanical potential curve of OH bonds of liquid water.
This paper attempts to investigate the nonlinear dynamic analysis of strong nonlinear problems by proposing a new analytical method called Hamiltonian Approach (HA). Two different cases are studied to show the accuracy and efficiency of the method. This approach prepares us to obtain the nonlinear frequency of the nonlinear systems with the first order of the solution with a high accuracy. Finally, to verify the results we present some comparisons between the results of Hamiltonian approach and numerical solutions using Runge-Kutta's [RK] algorithm. This approach has a powerful concept and the high accuracy, so it can be apply to any conservative nonlinear problems without any limitations.

Helmholtz resonator is widely used acoustic instrument which has high absorption characteristics at its resonance frequency. Particularly it maintains good performance even in the low frequency region that is difficult to control by general porous absorptive materials. However, under severely high sound pressure level, the absorption characteristics are changed by increase of resistance due to nonlinear behavior of neck impedance. Because of this nonlinear behavior, it is difficult to obtain the expected absorption performance under high sound pressure environment. Thus, in order to prevent excessive rise of resistance, the resonator with neck having cross section dimension decrease away from the entry of the resonator cavity could be suggested. This paper introduces the experiment method and results about nonlinear characteristics of Helmholtz resonator with tapered neck and proposes the approximate nonlinear impedance model.

This paper presents a filtering method using neural networks to extract fundamental frequency components of the transient wave signals in power systems. Based on the ability of multilayer feedforward neural networks to approximate any continuous function, a neural networks mapping filter is proposed for the protective distance relaying systems to extract the effective components efficiently. A characteristic feature of this mapping filter is composed of the multilayer perceptron neural networks which are trained by using random signals and those are mapped to the DFT filtering computational structure by GDR(Generalized Delta Rule). The advantage of this approach is demonstrated by the random waves and the fault transient wave signals of EMTP(electromagnetic transients program) in power systems fault conditions. The proposed method is compared with the conventional method and the simulation results show the efficiency of the neural networks.
In this paper, we study the first-order system least-squares (FOSLS) spectral method for parabolic partial differential equations. There were lots of least-squares approaches to solve elliptic partial differential equations using finite element approximation. Also, some approaches using spectral methods have been studied in recent. In order to solve the parabolic partial differential equations in parallel, we consider a parallel numerical method based on a hybrid method of the frequency-domain method and first-order system least-squares method. First, we transform the parabolic problem in the space-time domain to the elliptic problems in the space-frequency domain. Second, we solve each elliptic problem in parallel for some frequencies using the first-order system least-squares method. And then we take the discrete inverse Fourier transforms in order to obtain the approximate solution in the space-time domain. We will introduce such a hybrid method and then present a numerical experiment.
Some nonlinearities in feedback control systems, such as relay servo, Coulomb friction, saturating amplifier of backlash in gears cause some undesirable effects. These may be static errors, limit cycles or jump phenomena. So, linearizing method of these nonlinearities using dither signals was first suggested by Loeb. He pointed out that the addition of high frequency signal to either the input or the output of a nonlinear system would make the nonlinear performance approximate the performance of linear systems. He used high-frequency sinusoidal wave as dither signal. But, in this thesis, general method of analysis is suggested for nonlinear control systmes using various dither signals, such as noise signal of Gaussian amplitude distribution, sinusoidal dither signal and sawtooth dither signal. Also, the advantage and disadvantage of these dither signals are compared. Throughout the analysis statistical method is adopted and lastly analog computer is used for the experiment of various nonlinear systems using dither signals.

This study presents a bivariate extension of the goodness-of-fit measure for regional frequency distributions developed by Hosking and Wallis [1993] for use with the method of L-moments. Utilising the approximate joint normal distribution of the regional L-skewness and L-kurtosis, a graphical representation of the confidence region on the L-moment diagram can be constructed as an ellipsoid. Candidate distributions can then be accepted where the corresponding the oretical relationship between the L-skewness and L-kurtosis intersects the confidence region, and the chosen distribution would be the one that minimises the Mahalanobis distance measure. Based on a set of Monte Carlo simulations it is demonstrated that the new bivariate measure generally selects the true population distribution more frequently than the original method. An R-code implementation of the method is available for download free-of-charge from the GitHub code depository and will be demonstrated on a case study of annual maximum series of peak flow data from a homogeneous region in Italy.

This paper presents dynamic infinite element formulations which have been developed for soil-structure interaction analysis both in frequency and in time domains by the present authors during the past twenty years. Axisymmetric, 2D and 3D layered half-space soil media were considered in the developments. The displacement shape functions of the infinite elements were established using approximate expressions of analytical solutions in frequency domain to represent the characteristics of multiple waves propagating into the unbounded outer domain of the media. The proposed infinite elements were verified using benchmark examples, which showed that the present formulations are very effective for the soil-structure interaction analysis either in frequency or in time domain. Example applications to actual interaction problems are also given to demonstrate the capability and versatility of the present methodology.

Approximate analysis for a building installed with a friction damper is performed to get insight of its dynamic behavior. Energy balance equation is used to have a closed analytical form solution of dynamic magnification factor(DMF). It is found out that DMF is dependent on friction force ratio and resonance frequency. Approximation of DMF and equivalent damping ratio of a friction damper is proposed with such assumption that the building with a friction damper shows harmonic steady-state response and narrow banded response behavior near resonance frequency. Linear transfer function from input external force to output building displacement is suggested from the simplified DMF equation. Root mean square of a building displacement is derived under earthquake-like random excitation. Finally, design procedure of a friction damper is proposed by finding friction force corresponding to target control ratio. Numerical analysis is carried out to verify the proposed design procedure.

In this paper, the nonlinear free and forced vibration responses of sandwich nano-beams with three various functionally graded (FG) patterns of reinforced carbon nanotubes (CNTs) face-sheets are investigated. The sandwich nano-beam is resting on nonlinear Visco-elastic foundation and is subjected to thermal and electrical loads. The nonlinear governing equations of motion are derived for an Euler-Bernoulli beam based on Hamilton principle and von Karman nonlinear relation. To analyze nonlinear vibration, Galerkin's decomposition technique is employed to convert the governing partial differential equation (PDE) to a nonlinear ordinary differential equation (ODE). Furthermore, the Multiple Times Scale (MTS) method is employed to find approximate solution for the nonlinear time, frequency and forced responses of the sandwich nano-beam. Comparison between results of this paper and previous published paper shows that our numerical results are in good agreement with literature. In addition, the nonlinear frequency, force response and nonlinear damping time response is carefully studied. The influences of important parameters such as nonlocal parameter, volume fraction of the CNTs, different patterns of CNTs, length scale parameter, Visco-Pasternak foundation parameter, applied voltage, longitudinal magnetic field and temperature change are investigated on the various responses. One can conclude that frequency of FG-AV pattern is greater than other used patterns.
