  • The effects of joint density and size distribution on the hydrogeologic characteristics of jointed rock masses are addressed through numerical experiments based on the 2-D DFN (discrete fracture network) fluid flow analysis. Using two joint sets, a total of 51 2-D joint network system were generated with various joint density and size distribution. Twelve fluid flow directions were chosen every $30^{\circ}$ starting at $0^{\circ}$, and total of 612 $20m{\times}20m$ DFN blocks were prepared to calculate the directional block conductivity. Also, the theoretical block conductivity, principal conductivity tensor and average block conductivity for each generated joint network system were determined. The directional block conductivity and chance for the equivalent continuum behavior of the 2-D DFN system were found to increase with the increase of joint density or size distribution. However, the anisotropy of block hydraulic conductivity increases with the increase of density discrepancy between the joint sets, and the chance for the equivalent continuum behavior were found to decrease. The smaller the intersection angle of the two joint sets, the more the equivalent continuum behavior were affected by the change of joint density and size distribution. Even though the intersection angle is small enough that it is difficult to have equivalent continuum behavior, the chance for anisotropic equivalent continuum behavior increases as joint density or size distribution increases.

  • In Task C of the DECOVALEX-2023 project, nine institutes from six nations are developing their numerical codes to simulate thermo-hydro-mechanical coupled behavior for the FE experiment performed at Mont Terri underground rock laboratory, Switzerland. Currently, Step 1 for comparing the simulation results to field data is the ongoing stage, and we used the OGS-FLAC simulator for a series of numerical simulations. As a result, temperature increase depending on the heating hysteresis was well simulated, and saturation variation in the bentonite depending on phase change was observed. However, due to the suction overestimation, relative humidity and temperature change in the bentonite and the pressure variation in the Opalinus clay showed a difference compared to the field data. From the observation, it is confirmed that the effect of the bentonite capillary pressure is dominant to the flow analysis in the disposal system. We further plan to draw improved results considering tunnel support material and accurate initial water pressure distribution. Additionally, the thermal, hydrological, and mechanical anisotropy of the Opalinus clay was well simulated. From the simulation results, we confirmed the applicability of the OGS-FLAC simulator in the disposal system analysis.

  • Joints or weak planes can induce anisotropy in the strength and deformability of fractured rock masses. Comprehending this anisotropic behavior is crucial to engineering geology. This study used plaster as a friction material to mold specimens with a single joint. The strength and deformability of the specimens were measured in true triaxial compression tests. The measured results were compared with three-dimensional numerical analysis based on the distinct element method, conducted under identical conditions, to assess the reliability of the modeled values. The numerical results highlight that the principal stress conditions in the field, in conjunction with joint orientations, are crucial factors to the study of the strength and deformability of fractured rock masses. The strength of a transversely isotropic rock mass derived numerically considering changes in the dip angle of the joint notably increases as the intermediate principal stress increases. This increment varies depending on the dip of the joint. Moreover, the interplay between the dip direction of the joint and the two horizontal principal stress directions dictates the strength of the transversely isotropic rock mass. For a rock mass with two joint sets, the set with the steeper dip angle governs the overall strength. If a rock bridge effect occurs owing to the limited continuity of one of the joint sets, the orientation of the set with longer continuity dominates the strength of the entire rock mass. Although conventional three-dimensional failure criteria for fractured rock masses have limited applicability in the field, supplementing them with numerical analysis proves highly beneficial.

  • We investigated the soft magnetic properties of nanocrystalline Fe-Al-O film as etching the oxide film with ion beam etching method. It is thought that the grain size of Fe-Al-O film increases as the thickness decreases. The coercivity and squareness increase with decreasing thickness. The surface curvature of Am images increases when the etching experiment proceeds. This phenomena could be due to the grain growth which occurs during sputtering. This grain growth could be assisted by the the plasma energy during sputtering. Therefore proper thickness should be searched to acquire the good soft magnetic properties for the nanocrystalline film material. Good soft magnetic properties of Fe-Al-O film was acquired at the thickness of more than 900 nm.

  • This paper compares the two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) approaches for the numerical determination of the equivalent mechanical properties of fractured rock masses. Both orthogonally-fractured model and discrete fracture networks (DFN) were used for the geometry and 2D models were cut in various directions from 3D model to compare their mechanical properties. Geological data were loosely based on the data available from Sellafield, UK. Analytical method based on compliance tensor transformation was used for investigation in orthogonally fractured rock and numerical experiments were conducted on fractured rock mass with DFN geometry. It is shown that 2D approach always overestimates the elastic modulus of fractured rock masses by a factor of up to around two because fractures are assumed to be perpendicular to the model plane in 2D problems. Poisson ratios tend to have larger values in 2D analysis while there is opposite trend in some sections. The study quantitatively demonstrates the limitation of the 2D approach that uses the simplified model from true 3D geometry.

  • A computer program code was developed to estimate hydraulic behavior of the 2-D connected pipe network system, and implemented to evaluate the effect of joint aperture on hydraulic parameters of fractured rock masses through numerical experiments. A total of 216 stochastic 2-D DFN(discrete fracture network) blocks of $20m{\times}20m$ were prepared using two joint sets with fixed input parameters of joint orientation, frequency and size distribution. Two different cases of joint aperture variation are considered in this study. The hydraulic parameters were estimated for generated 2-D DFN blocks. The hydraulic anisotropy and the chance for equivalent continuum behavior of the DFN system were found to depend on the variability of joint aperture.

  • In this paper, the group velocity dispersion curves of the $S_o$ symmetric mode in unidirectional CFRP plate was calculated as varying the propagating direction. The group velocity curve was obtained with the group velocities of the $S_o$ symmetric mode corresponding to 0.2 MHz-mm under the first cut-off frequency in the dispersion curves, and corrected by introducing the slowness curve. The velocities of the $S_o$ symmetric mode in the unidirectional CFRP plate were measured as varying the propagating direction and compared with the col?rotted group velocity curve. The measured velocities were good agreement with the corrected group velocity curve except near the fiber direction which was called the cusp region. It implies that the direction of the group velocities incline toward the fiber direction of the unidirectional CFRP plates when the propagation direction is not accorded with the principal axis. It is supposed that this phenomenon rerults from the preferential propagating the energy toward the direction with the faster propagation velocity.

  • Tapered etching of polysilicon films has been achieved by implanting phosphorus ions into the polysilicon film and using plasma etch in either $CF_4-O_2\;or\;SF_6$. A two-step plasma etching method is also proposed to control the taper angle of the etched edge without changing the implantion conditions. The taper angle is determined by the ratio of the etch rate of the undamaged region to that of the damaged top region of the polysilicon layer. The ratio is found to be dependent on the implantion dose, the implantion energy and the anisotropy of etching. The minimum angle in our experiments is about $10^{\circ}$. When the two-step etching method is employed, the taper angles can be controlled from the minimum angle up to about $55^{\circ}$.

  • Co/Pd and Co/Pt multilayered thin films for perpendicular magnetic recording media were fabricated by sput¬tering method and the effects of the sputtering pressure during the formation of Pd or Pt underlayers on the magnetization behavior and coercivity of the multilayers were investigated. It was found that the coercivity of Co/Pd multilayers was strongly dependent on the sputtering pressure of underlayer and could be enhanced to a large extent merely by increasing the sputtering pressure of underlayer, while in case of Co/Pt films, the degree of coercivity enhancement by controlling the sputtering pressure of underlayer was almost negligible. Coercivity variation of Co/Pd and Co/Pt multilayers with the underlayer material and deposition pressure of underlayer could be well explained in terms of the interface roughness of multilayer films induced by underlayer topology, which could also be correlated to the change of perpendicular anisotropy energy and magnetic reversal feature with the sputtering pressure of underlayer. Kerr rotation angle was hardly affected by the preparation conditions of underlayers.

  • As large underground projects such as radioactive waste disposal, hot water and heat storage, and geothermal energy become influential, the study, which consider all aspects of thermics, hydraulics and mechanics would be needed. Thermo Hydro-Mechanical coupling analysis is one of the most complex numerical technique because it should be implemented with the combined three governing equations to analyze the behavior of rock mass. In this study, finite element code, which is based on Biot's consolidation theory, was developed to analyze the thermo-hydro-mechanical coupling in continuum rock mass. To verify the implemented program, one-dimensional consolidation model under the isothermal and non-isothermal conditions was analyzed and was compared with the analytic solution. The parametric study on two-dimensional consolidation was also performed and the effects of several factors such as poisson's ratio and hydraulic anisotropy on rock mass behavior were investigated. In the future, this program would be revised to be used for analysis of general discontinuous media with incorporating discrete joint model.
