Open mathematics education and Modelling (열린수학과 모델링)

  • The development of Science and Technology and the social change require new paradigm in Education. In a traditional paradigm, learners have been regarded as a passive being and knowledge could be transmitted to learner. But within this paradigm, it is difficult to confront the social change and to develop problem solving skills in various context. This results in a new, alternative perspective, Constructive paradigm. As an alternative to the traditional settings, Constructive paradigm emphasizes the learner centered instruction. The reform movement in mathematics education including NCTM's standards revolves around this paradigm and the open education movement in our educational system is based on it. Open education values learner's interest, autonomy and internal motivation in learning. However, open education has been misunderstood by most of the teachers. It should be understood as the change of paradigm. In this study, as a way of helping students connect mathematics to their everyday lives and construct meaningful mathematical knowledge and concept, mathematical modelling is suggested. It consists of posing and specifying the real problem, formulation and constructing a mathematical model, analyzing and solving a mathematical problem. interpreting the solution and comparing with reality and communicating results. In this process, technology like computer can be a powerful tool. It can help students explore various problems more easily and concretely.

Exploring the Exemplary STEAM Education in the U.S. as a Practical Educational Framework for Korea

  • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in the U.S. has been identified as a significant national reform in K-16 education and curriculum in order to prepare students for the global economy of the 21st century. Korea has been facing very similar challenges to improve science, technology and mathematics education, in particular, the affective aspect of learning science and mathematics. Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education has become a crucial issue in Korean education system. The major purpose of this exploratory study is to inform the exemplary framework of STEAM education in the U.S. for Korea and to provide descriptive and analytical accounts on STEAM teaching and learning as an innovative integrated convergence education. This study integrates the outcomes of research papers on STEM education and recent literature. It employs content analysis methodology qualitatively by analyzing and synthesizing the findings, conclusions, discussions, and recommendations of accumulated research works related to STEM/STEAM education. This study will help gain a stronger sense of the STEAM framework and will guide to develop the educational programs for Korea.

An analysis on 'storytelling' shown on the first grader's mathematics textbooks of the middle school (중학교 1 학년 수학교과서에 나타난 스토리텔링 특성에 대한 분석)

  • This study was to focus on analyzing about the composition of storytelling in the first graders' math textbooks of the middle school, which were recently implemented. The textbooks published by three well known publishing companies were chosen and three graduate students had scored the frequency of the problems according to three types of storytelling. As the results, in areas of mathematics, Number & Operation(44.23%), Letters & Formula(44.53%), Function(46.53%), Probability(41.67%), Geometry(46.23%) showed to have storytelling in balance. The type of 'explosion of mathematical history(EMH)' was shown in geometry most, the type of 'connection to daily life(CDL)' in statistics most, and the type of integration of disciplines(ID)' in geometry most in 5 math areas. Among three types of storytelling, the type of EMH was shown fewer that other 2 types. If we develop more problems in this type, students would study mathematics in-depth according to Freudenthal's principle of historical reinvention.

  • The removal of the Go Stones is a game that anyone can play through simple rules. It is not only an interesting game but also a mathematical game that requires comprehensive knowledge of several mathematical theories. Through analyzing the rules and theories of this game, students can get a new mathematical perspective and recognize something that they didn't realize as important before. Furthermore, this game is given to students as a mathematical problem unconsciously. This helps them get a mathematical approach to understanding the actual concept of the problem as well as the basic principle of the problem.

A Linguistic Study on the Sentence Problems in 2015 revised Elementary Mathematics Textbooks (초등수학 교과서 문장제의 언어적 분석)

  • In problem solving education, sentence problems are a tool for comprehensive evaluation of mathematical ability. The sentence problems refer to the problem expressed in sentence form rather than simply a numerical representation of mathematical problems. In order to solve sentence problems with a mixture of mathematical terms and general language, problem-solving ability including the ability to understand the meaning of sentences as well as the mathematical computation ability is required. Therefore, it is important to analyze syntactic elements from the linguistic aspects in sentence problems. The purpose of this study is to investigate the complexity of sentence problems in the length of sentences and the grammatical complexity of the sentences in the depth of the sentences by analyzing the 51 sentence problems presented in the $4^{th}$ grade mathematics textbook(2015 revised curriculum). As a result, it was confirmed that it is necessary to examine the length and depth of the sentence more carefully in the teaching and learning of sentence problems. Especially in elementary mathematics, the sentence problems requires a linguistic understanding of the sentence, and therefore it is necessary to consider syntactic elements in the process of developing and teaching sentence problems in mathematics textbook.

Intervening in Mathematics Group Work in the Middle Grades

  • Over the last three decades, there has been an increasingly strong emphasis on group-centered approaches to mathematics teaching. One primary responsibility for teachers who use group-centered instruction is to "check in", or intervene, with groups to monitor group learning and provide mathematical support when necessary. While prior research has contributed valuable insight for successful teacher interventions in mathematics group work, there is a need for more fine-grained analyses of interactions between teachers and students. In this study, we co-conducted research with an exemplary middle grade teacher (Ms. Green) to learn about fine-grained details of her intervention practices, hoping to generate knowledge about successful teacher interventions that can be expanded, replicated, and/or contradicted in other contexts. Analyzing Ms. Green's practices as an exemplary case, we found that she used exceptionally short interventions (35 seconds on average), provided space for student dialogue, and applied four distinct strategies to support groups to make mathematical progress: (1) observing/listening before speaking; (2) using a combination of social and analytic scaffolds; (3) redirecting students to task instructions; (4) abruptly walking away. These findings imply that successful interventions may be characterized by brevity, shared dialogue between the teacher and students, and distinct (and sometimes unnatural) teaching moves.

An Analysis of the Actual Status about the Connection of Teaching and Learning Mathematics between Elementary School and Junior High School (초.중학교 수학 교수학습 연계 실태 분석)

  • There is a difference in quality between transition from elementary school to junior high school and the simple change of grades. This time is also a critical time that many students would be to abandon the mathematics. According to experience in conjunction with mathematics, this timing can be either bright or dark outlook with relation to mathematical development. Thus, at this turning point, it is necessary to analyze what changes the students are experiencing in teaching and learning mathematics, what such changes effect the students, whether or not there is room for improving such changes etc. Therefore, in this study, by comparing and analyzing math lessons of 6th grade in elementary school and 1st grade in junior high school, we investigate the difficulties of teaching and learning mathematics experienced by students who have been placed in the turning point and suggest implications to help them to land softly into junior high school.

  • Curriculum for mathematic sis the system that selects and organizes the contents which have to be taught in school. Ultimately it can be the whole plan of school mathematical education. The study about curriculum for mathematics is the basic study field of the mathematical education, so curriculum-related studies have been continuously promoted in terms of character, organization and implement of the curriculum, learning contents contained by the curriculum, the connection between school levels, and comparison and analysis of domestic and foreign curricula. Thus, this paper investigated the 2009 Revised Curriculum for Mathematics, which is the curriculum of Korea and the CCSSM which is the curriculum of the U.S. Both have been adopted in schools recently. The purpose of this study is to understand the curricula for mathematics in elementary school of Korea and the U.S. in depth and obtain the implication for the further curriculum revision, by comparing and analyzing the curricula of two countries.

What Teachers Consider Important in Lesson Design: Focusing on the Analysis of a Lesson Plan of Elementary Mathematics (교사가 수업 설계에서 중요하게 고려하는 요소: 초등 수학 수업지도안에 대한 분석을 중심으로)

  • A well-designed mathematics lesson is the foundation for effective mathematics instruction. Given this significance, this paper focused on analyzing what would be important elements for in-service teachers in planning an elementary mathematics lesson. For this purpose, a total of 27 in-service teachers were asked to write down whatever they would consider important in designing a mathematics lesson. A mathematics lesson plan prepared by a pre-service teacher was provided for the in-service teachers. They were then asked to analyze the strengths of the lesson plan and to provide detailed feedback on how to improve it. The results of this study showed that the in-service teachers tended to analyze the given mathematics lesson plan in terms of what they considered important regarding lesson design. Such elements were specified when the in-service teachers described the strengths and feedback for improvement of the lesson plan. In particular, the aspects of instructional strategies and materials were explained in detail. Based on these results, this paper is expected to provoke discussions on lesson design of in-service teachers and subsequent research.

  • When teaching mathematics, one of the most effective ways of analyzing the weakness of student is to look over the process of problem solving. Based on this observation, we propose a Tablet PC based feedback system for effective mathematics education. The effectiveness of our system is demonstrated with usability tests.
