Objectives : Although Hwe Yang Gu Chim Hyul is important for acupuncture treatment in emergency and has been widely used, but there is few study about that, except some comments in ancient literatures. So in this study, the author reviewed the Hwe Yang Gu Chim Hyul, investigating the composition and the function, and found the meaning with analysis based on meridian. Methods : 1. The author reviewed several ancient literatures related with the Hwe Yang Gu Chim Hyul. 2. The author investigated the composition of Hwe Yang Gu Chim Hyul, and the location, acupuncture treatment, specificity, disease of each acupoint. 3. Following the investigation, the author found the meaning, the mechanism of function, and the clinical usefulness, based on analysis with meridian. Results : 1. Hwe Yang Gu Chim Hyul had been referred in "Chim Gu Chwei Young" for the first time. 2. Hwe Yang Gu Chim Hyul is composed of 9 acupoints, i.e. 1 acupoint of Governor Vessel, 1 acupoint of Conception Vessel, 2 acupoints of Yang Myoung meridian, 1 acupoint of So Yang meridian, 1 acupoint of Tae Eum meridian, 2 acupoints of So Eum meridian, 1 acupoint of Gwel Eum meridian. 3. It has not been controversial since the comment of "Chim Gu Chwei Young", and it became the origin. Conclusions : 1. Hwe Yang Gu Chim Hyul can be used for an emergency resulted from chronic disease based on heart failure and accumulation of food.

Objectives : Mitochondria are typically known as intracellular double membrane-bound structures that supply energy for intracellular metabolism including Krebs cycle and beta-oxidation. Also, acupuncture has been known to stimulate the flow of energy. To explore the effect of acupuncture on the mitochondrial respiratory chain activities in rat's heart and kidneys, the activities of mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes I to IV were observed. Methods : The rats were divided into 11 groups; Normal (no acupuncture treatment and under anesthesia for 10 min), heart meridian five-transport-points (acupuncture treatment at HT9, HT8, HT7, HT4 and HT3 under anesthesia for 10 min), and kidney meridian five-transport-points (acupuncture treatment at KI1, KI2, KI3, KI7 and KI10 under anesthesia for 10 min). All rats were sacrificed and the heart and kidneys were examined for the changes of respiratory chain activities. Results : Acupuncture at HT7 increased the activity of succinate dehydrogenase; acupuncture at KI2 increased the activity of ubiquinol cytochrome C oxidoreductase; and acupuncture at HT9, HT8, HT3 and KI1 increased activities of cytochrome C oxidase. Conclusions : Acupuncture assists mitochondrial repiratory chain activity via the Cytochrome C oxidase signaling pathway in heart and kidney of rats.

Objective : The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of smoking on the skin bioelectrical capacitance at specific acupoints of lung meridian. Methods : Bioelectrical capacitance was measured on bilateral six source points(bilateral LU10, LU9, LU7, LU6, LU5, LU1), and the changes with time and between left and right side were analyzed. Results : The skin bioelectrical capacitance at specific acupoints of lung meridian was significantly increased after smoking. And it recovered as time passed. The change of the skin bioelectrical capacitances at specific acupoints of lung meridian with time were similar between left and right. Conclusion : Smoking increases the bioelectrical capacitance at specific acupoints of lung meridian. There is no difference between the effects of smoking on the bioelectrical capacitance at left and right specific acupoints of lung meridian.

This study aimed to show the effects of Korean medicine treatment (particularly bee-venom pharmacopunture) on a patient with brachial plexus palsy. A 64-year-old woman was diagnosed with brachial plexus palsy on the right upper extremity and was treated with Korean and Western medicine from September 30^th to November 6^th, 2019. Improvement of the patient's symptoms was evaluated using the Manual Muscle Test, Range of Motion and visual analogue scale. After treatment, the patient's Manual Muscle Test grade and Range of Motion were improved, and the Visual Analogue Scale score indicated the intensity of her right hand numbness had decreased. These results suggested that improper use of crutches can result in brachial plexus palsy and a Korean-Western medicine treatment regimen primarily focused on bee-venom pharmacopunture, may be effective in reducing the symptoms of brachial plexus palsy.

Objectives : The liver is rich in mitochondria and it plays a key role in whole-body energy homeostasis. Acupuncture is known to stimulate and regulate the flow of energy. To explore the effect of acupuncture on the mitochondrial respiratory chain activity in the rats' livers, the activity of mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes I to IV was observed. Methods : The rats were divided into 4 groups; Normal 1 (no acupuncture treatment and anesthesia for 5 min), Normal 2 (no acupuncture treatment and anesthesia for 10 min), MA1 (acupuncture treatment at bilateral LR3 under anesthesia for 5 min), and MA2 (acupuncture treatment at bilateral LR3 under anesthesia for 10 min). All rats were sacrificed and the livers were examined for respiratory chain change. Results : There was no difference in ubiquinon oxidoreductase, succinate dehydrogenase, and ubiquinol cytochrome C oxidoreductase after acupuncture at LR3. Acupuncture at LR3 for 10 min increased the activity of cytochrome C oxidase compared with no acupuncture groups. Conclusions : Acupuncture at LR3 mediated mitochondrial respiratory chain activity via the cytochrome C oxidase signaling pathway in the livers of rats.

Objectives: The warm needling technique is a method which combines the effects of acupuncture with those of moxibustion. The purpose of this study was to find the stimulus effects of a high frequency warm needling device when stimulating acupoint $LI_4$ on the carrageenan-induced arthritis. Methods: This study was to observe the effects to edema reaction, WBF(weight bearing force), NO concentration, nNOS expression after the electro high frequency stimulus of high frequency warm needling device on LI4 with insulated acupuncture needle. Results: The effect of the high frequency warm needling device is to rise up the temperature in proportion to the current intensity. After stimulating on the acupoint $LI_4$ of the carrageenan-induced arthritis in rats with the high frequency warm needling device, it significantly reduced edema in the rat's foot. In addition, WBF, NO concentration of spinal cord (nmol/mg), and nNOS relative expression were reduced. Conclusions: The above results support the idea that stimulus by the high frequency warm needling device on $LI_4$ produces a potent analgesic effect in the arthritis pain model of the rat. Moreover, stimulus by the high frequency warm needling device modulates endogenous NO through the suppression of nNOS protein expression.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to check diagnostic performance of infrared thermography for patients with vascular claudication. Methods : 3 patients with vascular claudication were diagnosed with Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging(DITI) and compared the relative temperature difference between the right and left. Results : Symptomatic legs showed significant low body temperature and at the very site patients complained of pain on, the body temperature differed distinctly between the right and left. Conclusions : Infrared thermographic diagnosis with clinical symptoms may be helpful in diagnosing suspected vascular claudication.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of cervical acupotomy & acupunture on facial&trigemial nerve branch for peripheral facial paralysis and postauricular pain. Methods : We investigated 30 patients with peripheral facial paralysis who had visited at Department of Acupuncture & Moxibustion Medicine of Korean Medicine Hospital of Dong-Eui University from April 1st, 2013 to April 30th, 2014. Group A was treated by acupuncture and pharmacopuncture on facial&trigemial nerve branch and Cervical acupotomy and group B was treated by acupuncture and pharmacopuncture on routine facial paralysis acupuncture point without acupotomy. Results : The improvement of Yanagihara's score in group A is higher than group B during every period. The improvement of VAS score in group A is higher than group B during every period. Conclusions : These results suggest that cervical acupotomy and acupunture on facial & trigemial nerve branch may be effective for peripheral facial paralysis and postauricular pain.

Objectives : This study was carried out to investigate the correlation of meridian system in oriental medicine and muscular system in western medicine. Methods : Muscles were assigned to meridians by their main functions and the acupoints on them. New mutual relationships between meridians in lower limb were studied based on the muscular function. Results : In gluteal & femoral region, iliopsoas & quadratus femoris are assigned to spleen & stomach meridians, gluteus maximus & hamstrings to urinary bladder & kidney meridians, adductor muscle groups to liver meridian, gluteus medius & minimus & iliotibial tract to gall bladder meridian. In crural region, anterior crural muscles are assigned to stomach meridian, lateral crural muscles to gall bladder meridian, suferficial posterior crural muscles to urinary bladder (& kidney) meridian, deep posterior crural muscles to liver, spleen, kidney meridians. In lower limb, urinary bladder meridian and stomach meridian lead the muscular functions and correspond to each other, while spleen meridian assists stomach meridian, and kidney meridian assists urinary bladder meridian. Conclusions : Muscles may be assigned to meridians by their functions and the acupoints on them. From the view of muscular function, Yang meridians lead Yin meridians in lower limb.

Objectives : In order to confirm the anti-cancer effect of Trichosanthes kirilowii pharmacopuncture fluid, this study was proceeded. Methods : A549 lung cancer cells were cultured to be treated by Trichosanthes kirilowii pharmacopuncture fluid as dose dependent manner for 72 hours. And then the cell viability, nucleus fragmentaion, p21 and p53 protein expression, Bcl-2 and Bax protein expression, procaspase-3 PARP protein expression. Results : 1. Trichosanthes kirilowii pharmacopuncture fluid decrease A549 cell viability as dose dependent manner. 2. Trichosanthes kirilowii pharmacopuncture fluid induced the nucleus fragmentation in A549 lung cancer cells as dose dependent manner. 3. Trichosanthes kirilowii pharmacopuncture fluid increase the p21 and p53 protein expression. 4. Trichosanthes kirilowii pharmacopuncture fluid decrease the Bcl-2 protein expression but cannot affect the Bax protein expression. 5. Trichosanthes kirilowii pharmacopuncture fluid increase the activation of caspase-3 and PARP protein. Conclusions : As the above results, it was conclused the Trichosanthes kirilowii pharmacopuncture fluid had the anti-cancer effects to induce apoptosis.
