  • This study examined the effects of young children's effortful control, maternal parenting and teacher-child closeness relationship on young children's leadership. The subjects of this study were 266, 4-5 year old children and their mothers and teachers. Young children's effortful control, maternal parenting, teacher-child relationship and leadership were assessed by mother's and teacher's report. The collected data were analyzed by means of Pearson's correlation and pathway analysis. The results were as follows: first, teacher-child closeness relationship was found to affect young children's leadership directly and indirectly through young children's effortful control. Second, maternal parenting was found to affect young children's leadership indirectly through young children's effortful control. Third, young children's effortful control was found to affect leadership directly and to have a mediating effect between maternal parenting and young children's leadership, and between teacher-child closeness relationship and young children's leadership. Additionally teacher-child closeness relationship was found to be the most important variable predicting young children's leadership. These findings suggest that teacher-child closeness relationship could be the most important means by which we could improve both young children's effortful control and leadership.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in early childhood teachers' perceptions of the importance and institutional performance regarding young children's rights. Methods: 171 early childhood teachers responded to the questionnaires. The data were analyzed by using the paired sample t-test and the IPA graph to identify differences in the teachers' perceptions of the importance and performance of each right. Results: First, the teachers perceived the importance of children's rights to be high but low in institutional performance. The main effect of teaching years on the perception appeared significant only regarding performance of the rights of protection and participation. The main effect of teacher education experiences was significant in all areas except the importance of survival rights. The results from Two-Way ANOVA showed the two variables have no interaction. Second, the second quadrant of the IPA matrix displayed the items regarding initiative and autonomy of young children. Both inexperienced- and highly-experiencedteachers, when they had teacher education, recognized that the items related to participation rights should be further improved. Conclusion/Implications: We discussed the various ways in which children's rights should be improved and ways of improving teacher education according to teacher variables in order to promote young children's rights.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of communication and cooperation between teachers and parents on infant care. Specifically, this study explored the direct effect of teacher-parent partnership on teacher-infant interactions and the indirect effect through teacher sensitivity. Methods: The participants of this study were 216 teachers in charge of infant classes at child care centers located in Gyeonggi-do. They responded to questionnaires on teacher-parent partnership, their sensitivity, and teacher-infant interactions. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results: First, teacher-parent partnership did not have a direct impact on teacher-infant interactions. Second, teacher-parent partnership indirectly influenced teacher-infant interactions through teacher sensitivity. In other words, a high level of teacher-parent partnership was associated with a high level of sensitivity, subsequently resulting in the provision of high-quality interactions for infants. Conclusion/Implications: This study confirmed the role of teacher sensitivity as a mechanism to explain how teacher-parent partnership is linked to teacher-child interactions. The results emphasize the importance of communication and cooperation between teachers and parents in enhancing teachers' sensitivity and, ultimately, providing high-quality child care to infants.

  • The purpose of the study was to analyze the effects of both young children's gender and temperament and their teachers' teaching efficacy and teacher-child interactions on peer play interactions. For this purpose, the data from the 2012 Panel Study on Korean Children were analyzed using analyses of variances and correlation co-efficiencies. In addition, analyses of hierarchical regression, with young children's temperament and teacher-related factors (teaching efficacy and teacher-child interactions) as the independent variables and three sub-factors of peer play interactions (play interaction, play disruption, play disconnection) as the dependent variables, were conducted. The results showed that young children's temperament, teacher efficacy, teacher-child interactions, and peer play interactions differed by gender and significantly correlated. Young children's temperament and teacher-child interactions significantly affected young children's peer play interactions, and the effect of teacher-child interactions was larger than the effect of temperament by 2~2.5 times. The results proved the importance of early childhood teachers' roles in the development of young children's peer interactions with consideration of differences based on children's gender and temperament. With the results given, implications and suggestions for further research were discussed.
