공과대학 여학생의 셀프리더십, 사회적지지, 대인관계 유능성 간의 관계 (Relationships among Self-Leadership, Social Support and Interpersonal Competence of Women Engineering Students)

  • This research sought to investigate the relationships among self-leadership, social support and interpersonal competence of women engineering students. First, women undergraduate students' differences respecting self-leadership, social support and interpersonal competence were examined. Second, the relationships among self-leadership, social support and interpersonal competence were identified in terms of sub-factors of those three variables. Third, the effects of social support and interpersonal competence, as perceived by women undergraduate students, on self-leadership were explored. A total of 398 women undergraduate students from three universities in Korea responded to survey based on a three-variables scale. The findings were that, firstly, women engineering students scored lower in all of the three variables including self-leadership, social support and interpersonal competence, and that these major differences were statistically significant. Secondly, a positive correlation among self-leadership, social support and interpersonal competence was identified. Thirdly, it was determined that self-leadership was affected significantly by social support and interpersonal competence. The practical implications of these findings are discussed herein, with particular attention on education for promotion of self-leadership, social support and interpersonal competence.

공학계 여학생의 중도탈락 요인에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Factors of Women Student's Dropout from Engineering College)

  • In order to aware the situation and factors of women students' dropout from engineering college, the factor analysis for women students in P university was performed. The results showed responses that social cultural effects is more significant ones than social effect alone, and the effects of negative gender cognition in industrial circle and college to the women employees and coeds are more significant than effects of regional or positional ones. Also showed responses that the physical difference from man students, the ability for handling machine and tools, her parents' moral support, the gender cognitive engineering education and the boosting for job recruiting are more significants effects than the scholastic ability or the ageism. This may lay the foundation to make a curriculum for women included engineering education that emphasize the gender cognitive approach and the circumstances.

공학계열 남녀 졸업생의 조사를 통해 본 교과과정 내의 활동의 취업 기여 (Contribution of Curricula and Extra-Curricular Activities on Successful Employment Derived from an Engineering Graduates Survey)

  • This study investigated various attributes that contributed to successful employment in order to develop employment support programs, especially for female engineering students. We surveyed engineering students who graduated between 2006 and 2011. The 401 employed graduates participated in an online survey. The surveys inquired about their attachment towards their major, participation in various academic and non-academic activities, and their participation's contribution to their successful employment. In regards to their majors, women, in general, had lower levels of satisfaction, confidence, attachment, and motivation to succeed in their fields when compared to their male counterparts. These results show that engineering colleges still need to work on empowering female engineering students to gain confidence in their engineering major and attachment. The graduate school experience was highly rated by both men and women, whereas double majors exhibited somewhat lower scores. Among academic activities, part-time work experience and major-related internships were rated as the most helpful, and among extracurricular activities, study-abroad for language training and participation in student council or clubs received high scores. There was little difference between men and women in study-abroad participation, and women participated more actively in student councils. However, women had much less major-related work experience, reaffirming that colleges need to expand internship and field experience programs for female students.

소셜협업도구를 활용한 소프트웨어 개발 프로젝트가 여대생의 대인관계변화에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of SW Development Project with Social Collaboration tool on Inter-relationship Change of Women's University Students)

  • This paper deals with inter-relationship change of women's university students on the process of SW development project using social collaboration tool. Inter-relationship is one of the basic vocational competency in NCS(National Competency Standards) of Korea. We redesigned the curriculum of "Software Engineering" subject for this study and composed the project teams of students to develop software. The details of inter-relationship are satisfaction, communication, faith, friendliness, sensitivity, openness and consideration. From the result of this study, faith, openness and consideration have positive effect but satisfaction, communication, friendliness and sensitivity have no meaningful effect. The surveys were conducted in the beginning of semester and the same surveys were conducted again in the end of semester. The results were verified by paired t-test with SPSS 18.0. It is significant that the using of social collaboration tool for team project has positive effect on inter-relationship change, especially faith of women's university students. This study has some limitations for generalization but has meaning as new trial to enlarge the basic vocational competency of students in major subject, "Software Engineering". We expect new study for inter-relationship change of students to evaluate generality based on the proposed method in this paper.

이공계 여대생과 기업의 NCS 기반 직업기초능력 중요도 인식 및 평가에 의한 R-WeSET 프로그램 운영의 시사점 (Operational Implication of R-WeSET Program through Women Students and Companies' Perception and Assessment on the Basis of NCS Key Competency)

  • This study aims to deduce operational implication of R-WeSET program through women students in science & engineering and companies's perception and assessment on the basis of NCS key competency. The significant results are as follows. Firstly, companies and women students in science & engineering share a similar perception on importance of NCS key competencies. The programs should be reviewed and improved for women students who are truly aware of companies' needs. Secondly, the main areas of NCS key competency that are poor in companies' perception are 'positive thinking & drive', 'creativity & challenge spirit', 'communication skills' and 'problem-solving skills'. To enhance these weak skills, activating the actual programs such as "Convergence Design Camp", "Field Adaptability Improvement" and developing the new communication program are required. Lastly, most of women students have attained the satisfying result from "Field Competency Reinforcement Program". Especially, "Industry Field Training" shared the great progresses on all skills of key competency, hence why the progressive model should be developed in the future. This study figures out who's the right person for the 4th Industrial Revolution era, producing a meaningful result in order to change in the higher education system of women students and to grow human resources who will contribute to the community and company.

Does the nuclear engineering field perform worse in utilizing women? Evidence from South Korea

  • Despite its remarkable socioeconomic development, South Korea underperforms in terms of female labor force participation and women in leadership positions. As women appear to avoid nuclear engineering, we aim to evaluate its relative performance in attracting women to its labor force compared to other college majors. Using college-major level information from 2000, we test whether the female faculty share in nuclear engineering is lower than its counterparts. Although nuclear engineering has one of the lowest female faculty shares, its share exceeds that of agricultural science, business and economics, chemical engineering, chemistry, civil engineering, and industrial engineering once we properly control for gender composition among students and other compounding factors. In other words, once female students major in nuclear engineering, they are less likely to leave their fields compared to their counterparts in other disciplines. This result implies that if the nuclear engineering field aims to attract more women to its workforce, it is important to target them from the early stage of their careers.

공대 여학생의 남자교수 상담에 대한 만족도와 요구도 (Satisfaction and Needs of Female Students in Engineering with Counseling Men Professors)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the satisfaction and needs of female students in Engineering with counseling male professor. Subjects of this study were 92 female students in Engineering from a university in K city. Results of survey showed that women students in Engineering were most satisfied with the usefulness of counseling and next with male professor's attitude as counselor. Counseling needs of female students in Engineering was highest on receiving concrete information on finding a job from counseling and next to it on understanding women students. Results of focus group interview and suggestions for the study in the future were presented respectively.

공대 교수, 대학생, 기업가의 성인지력 비교 분석 (A Comparison Analysis of Gender Sensitivity Among Faculty, Students, and Enterprisers in Engineering)

  • 이 연구에서는 공대 교수, 학생, 기업의 성인지에 대한 사고를 조사하였다. 한국교통대학교 공대 교수 59명, 남학생 226명, 여학생 109명, 그리고 충북에 소재한 기업의 인사담당자 28명을 대상으로 하였다. 교수 대상 설문지는 26문항, 학생용은 30문항, 기업용은 5문항으로 구성하였다. 분석은 ${\chi}^2$ 교차분석방법을 사용하였다. 연구 결과, 교수는 일반적으로 성차이에 대한 인식을 가지고 있었다. 교수들은 여학생이 리더십이 부족하고 성공에 대한 자신감이 낮다고 생각하였다. 또한 여학생의 취업에 불이익이 있다고 인식하였다. 그러나 그들은 이러한 생각을 교육이나 취업 안내에 반영하지 않았다. 여학생들 역시 취업에 대한 자신감이 낮았으며, 공학교육에서 성인지적 교수법이 적용되지 않는다고 생각하였다. 여학생들은 남학생보다 공학전공에 대해 부정적이었으며, 교수의 인식과 유사하였다. 한편 남학생은 동료 여학생의 성인지에 대해 무심하였다. 기업의 취업담당자들의 인식은 교수나 학생의 인식과 달랐다. 이러한 연구 결과로부터 교수와 학생의 취업에 대한 인식이 변화되어야 함을 알 수 있다. 여학생들을 위한 더 나은 공학전공교육을 위하여 앞으로 연구가 필요하다.

공대 여학생의 전공 관련 심리적 특성에 미치는 WIE 프로그램의 영향 (The effect of WIE Program on the Psychological Characteristics of Women Students in Engineering)

  • 본 연구에서는 성인지적 관점을 도입하여 개발?운영되는 WIE사업을 통한 여학생들의 심리적 특성에 미치는 영향을 분석하여 공과대학 여학생들에게 전공분야로 진출하는데 필요한 특성을 고취시키고 여성공학인력 활용을 개선시키는 계기를 마련하고자 하였다. 공대 여학생들 207명을 대상으로 전공분야 진출 관련 심리적 특성과 프로그램을 통한 자기능력 향상에 대한 인식을 조사하였다. 연구 결과 첫째, 공대 여학생들의 전공관련 심리적 특성은 전공분야 진출 의욕, 경력에 대한 열망은 3.5점을 상회하고 있었고 취업관련 자기효능감은 두 특성에 비해 낮은 경향을 보였으며, 학생의 일반적 특성에 따른 심리적 특성에 유의한 차이를 보였다. 둘째, 프로그램 참여에 따른 전공분야 진출관련 심리적 특성을 살펴본 결과 참여경험이 있는 집단이 그렇지 않은 집단 보다, 경험이 높은집단의 경우 중간집단에 비해 전공분야 진출 관련 심리적 특성이 매우 유의한 차이를 보였다. 셋째, 프로그램 참여를 통해 습득된 자기능력을 공대 여학생들은 어떻게 인식하고 있는지 살펴본 결과 적극성, 자신감, 도전정신 등 선행연구들로부터 남학생에 비해 상대적으로 부족한 것으로 나타난 심리적 특성들이 프로그램을 통해 향상되었다고 인식하고 있어 프로그램별 기대효과 이상의 결과를 보였다.

여성공학도 진로장벽에 관한 남녀 인식 비교 (The Differences of Gender Awareness on Women Engineers' Career Barriers)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 여성공학도의 진로장벽에 관한 남녀 학생 인식비교이다. 이를 위해 진로장벽 인식에 관한 문헌을 조사하고, 이성식(2007) 박사학위논문에서 사용한 내용을 교육학박사 2인이 수정 보완하여 설문문항을 구성하였다. 설문대상은 수도권 소재 4학년 재학 중인 공과대학생 691명이다. 연구결과 남학생은 여학생보다 여성의 진로장벽인식(상호작용적, 태도, 사회적 대인적 진로장벽)에 긍정적인 것으로 나타났다. 또한 여학생들은 태도장벽을 긍정적으로 인식하고 있는데 반하여 상호작용적 장벽을 부정적으로 자각하고 있었다. 여학생들이 인식한 태도장벽과 상호작용적 장벽의 구체적인 요소를 알아보기 위하여 실시한 초점그룹 인터뷰 결과에서 여성공학도들은 학점을 근거로 자신들을 준비된 공학도로 이해하는 경향이 있었고, 여성의 진로개발과 유지에서의 애로사항은 잘 이해하고 있는 반면, 이에 대한 대응 전략에 대한 인식은 미흡하였다.
