  • Batch sorption experiments were performed to remove the uranium (U) in groundwater by using the bamboo charcoal. For 2 kinds of commercialized bamboo charcoals in Korea, the U removal efficiency at various initial U concentrations in water were investigated and the optimal sorption conditions to apply the bamboo charcoal were determined by the batch experiments with replicate at different pH, temperature, and reaction time conditions. From results of adsorption batch experiments, the U removal efficiency of the bamboo charcoal ranged from 70 % to 97 % and the U removal efficiency for the genuine groundwater of which U concentration was 0.14 mg/L was 84 %. The high U removal efficiency of the bamboo charcoal maintained in a relatively wide range of temperatures ($10{\sim}20^{\circ}C$) and pHs (5 ~ 9), supporting that the usage of the bamboo charcoal is available for U contaminated groundwater without additional treatment process in field. Two typical sorption isotherms were plotted by using the experimental results and the bamboo charcoal for U complied with the Langmuir adsorption property. The maximum adsorption concentration ($q_m:mg/g$) of A type and C type bamboo charcoal in the Langmuir isotherm model were 200.0 mg/g and 16.9 mg/g, respectively. When 2 g of bamboo charcoal was added into 100 mL of U contaminated groundwater (0.04 ~ 10.8 mg/L of initial U concentration), the separation factor ($R_L$) and the surface coverage (${\theta}$) maintained lower than 1, suggesting that the U contaminated groundwater can be cleaned up with a small amount of the bamboo charcoal.

  • Distribution coefficient ($K_d$) is an universal parameter estimating cadmium partition for a soil-water-crop system in agricultural lands. This study was performed to find some factors affecting soil-water partition coefficients for cadmium in some Korean soils. The distribution coefficients ($K_d$) of cadmium for the 15 series of agricultural soils were measured at quasi-steady state in the pH ranges from 2 to 11. The adsorption data of the selected soils showed a linear relationship between log $K_d$ and pH, which was well agreed with theoretically expected results ; $log\;K_d=0.6339pH+0.5532(r^2=0.70^{**})$. Normalization of the partition coefficients were performed in a range of pH 3.5 ~ 8.5 to minimize adverse effects of Al dissolution, cationic competition, and organic matter dissolution. The $K_d$-om, partition coefficients normalized for organic matter, improved this linearity to the pH of soils. The values of $K_d$-om measured from the field samples were significantly correlated with those of $K_d$ predicted from the sorption-edge experimental data ($r^2=0.68^{**}$).

  • Increase in water vapor barrier properties of sodium alginate films was studied by preparing composite films with fatty acids, i.e., lauric, palmitic, stearic, and oleic acids, and by treatment with 3% $CaCl_{2}$ solution for 3 min. Film thickness, surface color, microstructure, tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (E), water vapor permeability (WVP), water solubility (WS), and sorption isotherm of films were investigated. Microstructure of films observed with SEM was changed by fatty acid and $CaCl_{2}$ treatments. TS decreased 25-70% depending on fatty acid used, and increased 1.5- to 2-fold by $CaCl_{2}$ treatment. E decreased by both fatty acid and $CaCl_{2}$ treatments. Except oleic acid, WVP decreased significantly (p<0.05) by forming composite films with fatty acids, particularly with stearic acid, WVP decreased more than two-fold. WS also decreased by fatty acid and $CaCl_{2}$ treatments. In stearic acid, WS decreased about 30-fold by combined treatment of fatty acid and $CaCl_{2}$. Sorption isotherm showed typical biphasic pattern with deliquescent point of 0.75. Results of isotherms and BET monolayer moisture content indicated hydrophilicity of film decreased by $CaCl_{2}$ treatment.

  • The effects of drying methods on the browning and moisture sorption characteristics of Rubus coreanus were studied. Fruits were steamed for 5 min at $100^{\circ}C$, dried by sun drying, infrared drying, or freeze drying, and powdered to a size of 20 mesh. Color values were measured and equilibrium moisture contents (EMC) were determined at $20^{\circ}C$, over a range of water activity ($a_w$) from 0.11 to 0.90. The browning indices $L^*$ and $a^*$ values were higher and lower, respectively, in freeze-dried Rubus coreanus compared with other samples. The $b^*$ value was greatest in freeze-dried Rubus coreanus. EMC tended to increase with increasing $a_w$ values, and a particularly sharp increment was observed above 0.75 $a_w$. The EMC of freeze-dried Rubus coreanus was significantly higher compared with the EMC of sun-dried and infrared-dried fruit at constant aw. The moisture sorption isotherms showed a typical sigmoid shape, and the Halsey, Kuhn, and Oswin models were the best fits for the sun-dried, infrared-dried, and freeze-dried powder isotherms, respectively. With respect to monolayer moisture content, the Guggenheim-Anderson-Boer (GAB) equation showed that the various drying methods yielded very different results, with monolayer moisture contents of 0.005 g $H_2O/g$ dry solid in infrared-dried and 0.019 g $H_2O/g$ dry solid in sun- and freeze-dried powders, respectively. These results indicate that the drying method affects the browning and moisture sorption characteristics of Rubus coreanus.

  • To investigate the sorption characteristics of Cs, which is one of the major isotopes of nuclear waste, on natural zeolite chabazite, XRD, EPMA, EC, pH, and ICP analysis were performed to obtain the informations on chemical composition, cation exchange capacity, sorption kinetics and isotherm of chabazite as well as competitive adsorption with other cations ($Li^+$, $Na^+$, $K^+$, $Rb^+$, $Sr^{2+}$). The chabazite used in this experiment has chemical composition of $Ca_{1.15}Na_{0.99}K_{1.20}Mg_{0.01}Ba_{0.16}Al_{4.79}Si_{7.21}O_{24}$ and its Si/Al ratio and cation exchange capacity (CEC) were 1.50 and 238.1 meq/100 g, respectively. Using the adsorption data at different times and concentrations, pseudo-second order and Freundlich isotherm equation were the most adequate ones for kinetic and isotherm models, indicating that there are multi sorption layers with more than two layers, and the sorption capacity was estimated by the derived constant from those equations. We also observed that equivalent molar fractions of Cs exchanged in chabazite were different depending on the ionic species from competitive ion exchange experiment. The selectivity sequence of Cs in chabazite with other cations in solution was in the order of $Na^+$, $Li^+$, $Sr^{2+}$, $K^+$ and $Rb^+$ which seems to be related to the hydrated diameters of those caions. When the exchange equilibrium relationship of Cs with other cations were plotted by Kielland plot, $Sr^{2+}$ showed the highest selectivity followed by $Na^+$, $Li^+$, $K^+$, $Rb^+$ and Cs showed positive values with all cations. Equilibrium constants from Kielland plot, which can explain thermodynamics and reaction kinetics for ionic exchange condition, suggest that chabazite has a higher preference for Cs in pores when it exists with $Sr^{2+}$ in solution, which is supposed to be due to the different hydration diameters of cations. Our rsults show that the high selectivity of Cs on chabazite can be used for the selective exchange of Cs in the water contaminated by radioactive nuclei.

  • Native and acetylated soybean protein with acetylation percentage of $25\%$ were incubated with glucose to induce Maillard reaction. Acetylation of ${\varepsilon}$-amino group of lysine residues changed the conformation of soybean protein. The direct uv spectrum of native and acetylated soybean protein showed conformational changes with accessibility of tyrosine and tryptophan residues increased. Acetylation suppressed Maillard reaction between soybean protein and glucose. Acetylated soybean protein showed improved water sorption, fat binding, foam formation, and emulsion activity of the protein, but depressed brown pigment development and trypsin digestion. Thus aceylation prevented deterioration of certain functional characteristics that occurred during storage, besides causing functional characteristics to be improved on its own.

  • Hygroscopic knitted cotton fabric was found to spontaneously absorb water showing a significantly wide concentration gradient in the absorption direction. A semi-empirical diffusion model was introduced to describe how the wicking behavior compared to the classical capillary model (Washburn's equation), which has been widely used in the textiles industry. The capillary sorption curve and the permeability coefficient, which are key variables for the model equations, were measured using an electronic balance. The concentration profile as a function of the wicking distance and the elapsed time was derived, based on the diffusion model. From the concentration profile, the wicking distance detectable by the human eye or a digital camera with the aid of an image-analysis system, could be described realistically as a function of the time. The classical capillary model could be modified by introducing the tortuous correction factor to match the diffusion model. Wicking models and data-processing techniques in the work could provide useful tools for objectively evaluating the textile's wicking performances.

  • In this research, we proposed the immobilization zone where the organic contaminant would be fixed, so that ground water could be prevented from the organic contaminants. The surfactant was adsorbed on the soil particles and the organic contaminants were partitioned into the hydrophobic tails of the surfactant in the immobilization zone. Surfactants with different molecular structures-SDDBS (sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid), MADS (monoalkylated disulfonated diphenyl oxide), DADS (dialkylated disulfonated diphenyl oxide) - were used in this study. Up to the present, the research on the immolization simulated the saturated condition. But many site contaminated with organic contaminants and the zones where immobilization would be applied are unsaturated. In this research, in order to investigate the behaviors of surfactants and organic contaminants in unsaturated condition, the unsaturated columns were experimented, and their results were compared with the saturated case.

  • There are many reports on the stability of drugs in powders and tablets. The stabilities of ascorbic acid in the antacid preparations, such as calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, magnesium trisilicate, magnesium alumino silicate, and dried aluminum hydroxide gel under various humidities were examined. From the result of the experiment, it was assumed that the concentration of ascorbic acid, the amount of water-vapor sorption, and the physical character of the antacid ingredients were the main factors, influencing the degradation of ascorbic acid. The ascorbic acid, mixed with carbonates, such as calcium carbonate, was degradaded rapidly, while the preparation with dried aluminum hydroxide gel was slightly degraded after 10 days. A 2% ascorbic acid in the prepation was rapidly degraded than 10% ascorbic acid in the preparation.
