The discharge capacity of vertical drains installed in the field is reduced with time elapsed after installation due to deformation of drains and clogging effect. Discharge capacity of two types of vertical drains was analysed about three years after installation in the subsoil. Discharge capacity of two types of vertical drains were measured by small, middle, and large scale test apparatus. The results indicate that the discharge capacity of vertical drains after three years operation dramatically decreased compare to the initial discharge capacity.

In this study, it was to investigate the possibility to use the converts slag, by product in producing steel as a substitute material with sand that is used fur a civil construction materials, in developing techniques to use converts slag to improve soft clay ground. To do this, it was investigated the physical and mechanical properties of the converts slag as a civil construction material. For this, cylindrical cell consolidation with a single vertical drains and large scale soil box test were performed. Through large scale soil box test, the applicability of the converts slag to the present vertical drain techniques which is dependent on sand and plastic drains was studied. As a result of that, it was found that the shape of inserted drains was maintained after completing a consolidation process of a soft clay with slag drains. In addition, we could find that the slag drains showed the similar results with sand drains in soft clay by analyzing the effect of acceleration of consolidation.
Horizontal drains are sometimes installed on the ground together with vertical drains in order to drain excess pore water. Taking into account the discharge capacity of horizontal drains, a new analytical method is developed in this paper, and then a new formula for the discharge capacity of horizontal drains is proposed. It is known from the analysis that the effect of the rate of surcharge loading is negligible in determining horizontal discharge capacity. This formula is described as the function of coefficient of consolidation, space of vertical drain, compression index, length of horizontal drains, and thickness of the compressible layer.

This study concerns with the variation of engineering characteristics of soft ground under embankment treated vertical drains. The derived engineering characteristics can be used in the prediction of increased strength of soft ground treated with vertical drains. The variations of physical properties such as liquid limit, natural water content, void ratio, and dry unit weight, and mechanical properties such as strength, preconsolidation ratio, compressibility are analysed and suggested. The co-relation of physical properties and mechanical properties with installation of vertical drains in soft ground are derived in this study.
A pilot test using environmentally friendly drains, was carried out to evaluate their applicability potential in the field. The pilot test site was divided into 5 different areas, with several combinations of vertical and horizontal drains installed for evaluation. Conventional natural fiber drains (FDB), new developed straw drain board (SDB) and plastic drain board (PDB) were used as vertical drains, while sand and fiber mats were used as horizontal drains. Surface settlement rates and excess pore pressure generation/dissipation tendency of PDB and FDB are almost identical except those of SDB. Cone tip resistance obtained from cone penetration test measured at the end of 1st consolidation stage for upper soft layer definitely increased irrespective of types of vertical drains. The monitoring and site investigation test data obtained at the pilot test site prove the vertical natural fiber drains can be used as substitutes of conventional plastic and sand material.

The Vertical Drains(Sand Drains, Pack Drain, PBD) is used for Vertical Drains Method in domestic. Each of the drains is selected after it consider a field condition and efficiency of drain. A discharge capacity is very important factor, which to estimate a efficiency. And the smear Zone where disturbance area of in-suit by installation of Vertical Drains is important factor to select a drains. In this study, the complex discharge capacity test was operated for discharge capacity comparison of the Wing Drain and PBD. And a model test was operated to apprehend smear zone of the Wing Drain and PBD. From these tests, it was apprehended an engineering characteristic of vertical drain. The results of the complex discharge capacity test, a discharge capacity fell below $20cm^3/sec$ to $1cm^3/sec$ in more than overburden load $2.5kg/cm^2$. The Wing Drain maintained a over $40cm^3/sec$ in more than overburden load $2.5kg/cm^2$ and minimum discharge capacity $8cm^3/sec$. The results of the smear zone test, a influence bounds of smear zone was more larger in case of the Wing Drain(rectangle) than the PBD. But when a discharge capacity of Wing Drain is considered, it was concluded which smear zone bounds difference was effected in comparison with PBD. I think that it minimized a mandrel section to minimize a smear zone effect range

Recently it is difficult to secure sand used in the improvement of soft ground, and so it is necessary to find alternative materials. For this reason many researchers are studying and trying to find new substitute materials. One of the materials is considered as converter slag by wind fracture which is generated in the production of steel manufacture by electric circuit. It is environment friendly since it is a recycled material and economical since it is cheaper than sand. To investigate the applicability of converter slag by wind fracture as the alternative material such as vertical drains, it is necessary to check the drainage effect of this in the field construction. In order to attain an successful design it is important to predict problems encountered in field construction. Accordingly, in this study the laboratory test was executed under different conditions in advance of applying of the field. A total of 4 cases including slag, sand+slag, pack slag and sand as vertical drains was conducted, and at the base of the laboratory test the field test was executed and analyzed.

In-situ soil remediation mechanism through the vertical drains (VDs) is analyzed with numerical model as the error and complementary error function. Results from in-situ test and analysis indicate that the contaminant concentration ratio as initial one ( C/$C_0$) increases as the radius ratio ( r/R) increases from the injection well, and also increases as the depth ratio ( z/ H) increases from the top of contaminated area. The elapse time needed to attain $50\%$ and $90\%$ clean up level ($ t_{50},\;t_{90}$) increases as the radius ratio ( r/R) and the depth ratio ( z/ H) increase. As above results, the procedure of soil flushing in contaminated area using vertical drains makes progress from the top of injection well to the bottom of extraction well.

Vertical drains are commonly used to accelerate the consolidation process of soft soils, such as dredged materials. The installation of vertical drain provides a radial drainage path to water in the deposit soil in addition to the vertical direction. An estimation of time rate of settlement is considerably complicated when vertical drains are installed to enhance consolidation process of dredged material because the vertical drains are commonly installed before self-weight consolidation is ceased. In this paper, the vertical drain theory developed by Barron(1948) is applied to analyze the non-linear consolidation behavior considering radial drainage. The overall average degree of self-weight consolidation of the dredged soil under the condition that the water is drained in both radial and vertical directions is estimated using the Carillo(1942) formula. In addition, the Morris(2002) theory and the one-dimensional non-linear finite strain numerical model, PSDDF, are applied to analyze the self-weight consolidation in case of only the vertical drainage is considered. The new analysis approach proposed herein can simulate properly the time rate of the self-weight consolidation of dredged materials that is facilitated with vertical drains.
