H.264, a recently proposed international video coding standard, has adopted context-based adaptive variable length coding (CAVLC) as the entropy coding tool in the baseline profile. By combining an adaptive variable length coding technique with context modeling, we can achieve a high degree of redundancy reduction. However, CAVLC in H.264 has weakness that the correct prediction rate of the variable length coding (VLC) table is low in a complex area, such as the boundary of an object. In this paper, we propose a VLC table prediction scheme considering multiple reference blocks; the same position block of the previous frame and the neighboring blocks of the current frame. The proposed algorithm obtains the new weighting values considering correctness of the VLC table for each reference block. Using this method, we can enhance the prediction rate of the VLC table and reduce the bit-rate.

Video compression schemes have been developed and used for many years. Currently, H.264/AVC is the most efficient video coding standard. The H.264/AVC baseline profile adopts CAVLC(Context-Adaptive Variable Length Coding) method as an entropy coding method. CAVLC gives better performance in compression ratios than conventional VLC(Variable Length Coding). However, because CAVLC decoder uses a lot of VLC tables, the CAVLC decoder requires a lot of area in terms of hardware. Conversely, since it must look up the VLC tables, it gives a worse performance in terms of software. In this paper, we propose a new hierarchical grouping method for the VLC tables. We can obtain an index of codes in the reconstructed VLC tables by simple arithmetic operations. In this method, the VLC tables are accessed just once in decoding a symbol. We modeled the proposed algorithm in C language, compiled under ARM ADS1.2 and simulated it with Armulator. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm reduces execution time by about 80% and 15% compared with the H.264/AVC reference program JM(Joint Model) 10.2 and the arithmetic operation algorithm which is recently proposed, respectively.
We present a new algorithm for VLC table prediction in H.264 context-based adaptive variable length coding (CAVLC). Using both the correlation of coding modes and the statistics of the mode distribution in intra and inter frames, we can predict an appropriate VLC table of the given $4{\times}4$ block. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm reduces the bit rate about 0.97% on average, compared to the H.264/AVC standard.
Multiple LED arrays can be utilized in visible-light communication (VLC) to improve communication efficiency, while maintaining smart illumination functionality through dimming control. This paper proposes a modulation scheme called "Spatial Intensity Modulation" (SIM), where the effective number of turned-on LEDs is employed for data modulation and dimming control in VLC systems. Unlike the conventional pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM), symbol intensity levels are not determined by the amplitude levels of a VLC signal from each LED, but by counting the number of turned-on LEDs, illuminating with a single amplitude level. Because the intensity of a SIM symbol and the target dimming level are determined solely in the spatial domain, the problems of conventional PAM-based VLC and related MIMO VLC schemes, such as unstable dimming control, non uniform illumination functionality, and burdens of channel prediction, can be solved. By varying the number and formation of turned-on LEDs around the target dimming level in time, the proposed SIM scheme guarantees homogeneous illumination over a target area. An analysis of the dimming capacity, which is the achievable communication rate under the target dimming level in VLC, is provided by deriving the turn-on probability to maximize the entropy of the SIM-based VLC system. In addition, a practical design of dimmable SIM scheme applying the multilevel inverse source coding (MISC) method is proposed. The simulation results under a range of parameters provide baseline data to verify the performance of the proposed dimmable SIM scheme and applications in real systems.

Visible light communication(VLC) system based on LED devices has some specific advantages compared with RF system. First, visible light is harmless to human and there is no limit to using frequency band. Also, VLC system has good security performance, and it can use the very wide frequency band for data transmission. However, for simultaneously using the illumination and data transmission in VLC systems, degradation of code rate is occurred. So, in this paper, we proposed the novel line coding scheme for flicker free and efficient dimming control in VLC systems. From the simulation results, it is confirmed that proposed scheme has good flicker, dimming, and transmission performance compared to conventional variable pulse position modulation(VPPM) scheme.
This paper proposes context-based coding methods for variable length coding of inter-frame DCT coefficients. The proposed methods classify run-level symbols depending on the preceding coefficients. No extra overhead needs to be transmitted, since the information of the previously transmitted coefficients is used for classification. Two entropy coding methods, arithmetic coding and Huffman coding, are used for the proposed context-based coding. For Huffman coding, there is no complexity increase from the current standards by using the existing inter/intra VLC tables. Experimental results show that the proposed methods give ~ 19% bits gain and ~ 0.8 dB PSNR improvement for adaptive inter/intra VLC table selection, and ~ 37% bits gain and ~ 2.7dB PSNR improvement for arithmetic coding over the current standards, MPEG-4 and H.263. Also, the proposed methods obtain larger gain for small quantizaton parameters and the sequences with fast and complex motion. Therefore, for high quality video coding, the proposed methods have more advantage.
Variable length coding (VLC) has been used in many well known standard video coding algorithms such as MPEG and H.26x. However, VLC can not be processed parallelly because of its sequentiality. This sequentiality is a big barrier for implementing a real-time software video codec since parallel schemes can not be applied. In this paper, we propose a new fast VLD (Variable Length Decoding) method based on the probabilistic distribution of symbols in VLC tables used in MPEG as well as H.263 standard codecs. Even though MPEG suggests the table partitioning method, they do not show theoretically why the number of partitioned tables is two or three. We suggest the method for deciding the number of partitioned tables. Applying our scheme to several well-known MPEG-2 test sequences, we can reduce the computational time up to about 10% without any sacrificing video quality
The Advanced Intra Coding(AIC) mode included in the H.263+ which is for video ceding at low bit rates, selects one prediction direction of DCT coefficients among three directions for every intra macroblock. Based ()n the selected direction, It uses a different DCT scanning order, quantization scheme, and VLC table. The use of the AIC mode brings higher compression ratio and improved PSNR than the H.263 baseline. This paper proposes a simplified submode selection method for a direction of the DCT coefficient prediction for advanced ultra coding in H.263. Compared to the conventional method the proposed simplified method can achieve a similar coding Performance at computational complexity reduced to 1/7 and with much less memory requirement. The proposed method will be useful in implementing a simplified H.263 system.
A EBCOT(Embedded Block Coding with Optimized Truncation) is image compression codec using in JPEG2000, currently the new standard for still image coding. this paper proposes multi-channel video transfer system with EBCOT using a single codec to transfer video to difference band-width channel. This parer testify that compression rate of EBCOT higher than ordinary VLC using RLC and Huffman codec and apply EBCOT to JPEG structure. this structure increases parallelism and error resilience using black coding method. finally it looks into difficult to apply MPEG structure to multi channel video transfer system, and proposes solution using EBCOT.

The frame coding inside the screen for a video coder has a big influence on the quality of the whole frame. The standardized video coder uses DCT, however it can give rise to a low image quality due to the blocking effect at low bit rate. This paper proposes a video coding method for an image quality improvement in human visual aspects. With the proposed method, the perceptual weight is coded with SPIHT and VLC by applying it into the frame and the visual noises are eliminated.
