Utilization of Internet Health Information Sites by Undergraduates at Colleges Related to Public Health (보건관련학과 대학생들의 인터넷을 통한 건강관련 정보활용도)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the utilization of Internet health information sites by undergraduates at colleges related to public health. A self-administered questionnaire survey was carried out by 2,400 student from university and colleges in Taegu and Kyongsangbuk-do area from March 11, 2002 to March 31, 2002. 58.8% of the subjects responded that once connected rate of health information sites on the internet for year. In the connection rate of health information sites on the internet, the low class($\leq$300%), the middle class(40-70%), and the high class(80%$\leq$) accounted for 89.8%, 9.0%, and 1.2%, respectively. A ranking of internet health information sites, diseases are ranked frist and exercise is ranked second and obesity is ranked third. The motives Students submit reports 36.1% and obtained knowledge 22.8%. Sufficiency of health information sites on the internet, sufficient 19.6%, common 56.3%, and insufficient 24.1%, Satisfaction of health information, satisfied 18.4%, common 63.1%, and dissatisfied 18.4%. With regards to the health behavior of the subjects that contacted Internet health information sites, the nonsmoking rate was 86.2%, the nondrinking rate was 28.9%, the rate of exercise practice was 22.6%, the rate of normal sleep was 66.3%, the rate of eating breakfast was 37.1%, the rate of not eating between meals was 4.8%, and the standard BMI was 14.3%. With regards to the health behavior of the subjects that had not contacted Internet health information sites, the nonsmoking rate was 84.9%, the nondrinking rate was 26.0%, the rate of exercise practice was 18.5%, the rate of normal sleep was 72.1%, the rate of eating breakfast was 34.3%, the rate of not eating between meals was 5.0%, and the standard BMI was 17.0%. In the frequency of health behavior, the subjects with the Breslow Index of 0-3, 4-5 and 6-7 accounted for 80.9%, 18.8%, and 0.2%, respectively. The average score of health behavior was 2.80 out of 7. In conclusion, Internet health information sites are required for students to understand proper, reliable, interesting information and there is a need to develop simple criteria that the general public can understand and utilize.

Study on utilization status of internet and needs assessment for developing nutrition education programs among elementary school children

  • This study was to investigate utilization status of internet, health/nutrition websites among children, and to assess the needs for developing nutrition websites and education programs for children. The survey questionnaire was administered to 5-6th grade students (n=434) at two elementary schools. About 32% used the internet every day while 19.5% used it whenever they needed, showing significant differences in internet usage by gender (p<0.01). Although the subjects used the internet frequently, those who used health/nutrition websites were 23.3%. The purpose of using these sites were mainly 'to obtain health/nutrition information' (55%), 'to get information regarding weight control' (17%). Fifty-six percent of the users were satisfied with the nutrition websites, but only 30% said that they were helpful. The preferred topics in developing nutrition websites were assessment of obesity, exercise methods, weight control methods, nutrition information (e.g., diet for stature growth), dietary assessment and food hygiene. Girls showed more interest in these topics than boys (p<0.05). For school nutrition education, girls showed more interest than boys in topics for cooking snacks (p<0.001) and selecting snacks (p<0.05). In nutrition websites, subjects wanted to have information and game/quiz, as well as getting information using Flash animation. The favorite colors for screen and text were slightly different by gender (p<0.01). In school nutrition education, 89.5% of subjects liked to have activities (e.g., cooking, exercise, game). They also liked materials using computers, video and internet than printed materials. If nutrition education was done at schools, subjects wanted to receive 5.7 times of education per semester on average (mean length: 42.6 min/session). This study suggests that nutrition websites and education programs for children should include the topics such as assessment of obesity or diet, weight control and special information (e.g., diet for growth) as well as general information. In designing nutrition websites and programs, methods including game, quiz, Flash animation and activities (cooking, exercise) could be appropriately used to induce the interest and involvement of children.

The Status of the Utilization Internet and Dietary Information by Elementary School Dietitians in the Gyeongnam and Jeonbuk Areas (평남과 전북지역 초등학교 영양사의 인터넷 및 식생활정보 이용실태)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the status of the utilization of internet and dietary information by elementary school dietitians (total = 201) The results were summarized as follows: All subjects used the internet regularly and the major purpose they mentioned for using it was ″data search″ (72.3%). Those having a frequency of using the internet 6 to 7 times per week were 46.7% of the subjects and the majority indicated the duration of their use of the internet was ″〈 2 hours″ (68.5%). They mainly used the internet at ″school″ (81.8%) , and their favorite search engines were ″Daum″ (41.1%) and ″Yahoo″ (34.7%). They stated that the organization that offered reliable internet information were those ″related to society and organizations″ (36.9%) and ″educational institutions″ (33.8%). Ninety-five percent of the subjects searched for dietary information mainly ″for public affairs″ (80.0%) Their degree of satisfaction when searching for information was high (78.7%). Those dissatisfied with internet sites when searching for dietary information give the following reasons: ″poor information″ (39.1%) and ″slow updates″ (25.4%). They acquired information on nutrition and health management mainly through ″the internet″ (63.6%) The most frequently requested information about public affairs was on ″Materials for nutritional education″ (38.6%) and ″up-to-date nutritional information″ (16.0%) . The desirable update periods for websites was ″1 -3 months″ (51.8%) and ″ < 1 month″ (30.6%), and the favorite site colors were ″blue″ (37.8%) and ″green″ (37.8%). The results of this study showed that, although the internet usage was high, the dietitians were dissatisfied with the information obtained. A Study on Health Information and Medical Consulting via Internet Focusing on the Age Group of 20s (인터넷을 활용한 건강정보 및 의료상담에 관한 연구 (20대를 중심으로))

  • High Internet usage and the public's keen interest on health have influenced the health care system, and a potential value of the online health information and medical consultation market is immense. This study reveals results from data collected from Seoul residents in the age group of 20s in 2011. Out of 499 respondents, 75.2% answered that they used online health information; however, only 7.2% answered that they have used online medical consultation services. Findings on the purposes of using online medical consultation included treatments of symptoms(33.6%) and self-disciplines of one's health(19.5%). Mostly used Websites for health information search included search engines and blogs, but respondents preferred to use government sites and hospital sites in the future. When choosing a medical consultation, respondents preferred a certain website for different reasons including creditability of the consultant(23.7%), creditability of the organization(23.7%), rapid responses(21.2%), and more. Overall, although health information search via web is being highly utilized among people in their 20s, utilization of online medical consulting is not. Thus, promotion efforts to increase awareness and utilization of online medical consulting based on the site selection criteria, type of personal information disclosure, and other preferences are essential. Also, creating websites meeting these criteria is important.

Recognition and use of health information for preliminary elderly and elderly people (예비고령층과 고령층의 건강정보 경로별 인식과 활용)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the recognition and utilization of health information by acquisition channels for preliminary and elderly people. For the survey data of 200 people aged 55 to 64 and 200 seniors aged 65 or older, the chi-square test and Fisher's precision test were performed using MINITAB17. Although the two age groups were similar in obtaining health information through health professionals, preliminary elderly were more likely to obtain health information through mass media and Internet sites. In particular, the collection of health information through internet sites was more than four times higher than that of the elderly. While the preliminary people focused on searching the information on the health care and prevention, older people explored comprehensive information on health, including disease prevention and treatment, through each channel. Both groups showed positive recognition about the acquired health information. The results of this study confirmed that all channels, including internet sites, can be usefully used in the delivery of health-related information to the elderly in the future. In addition, it is suggested to consider age characteristics and health information utilized by each channel in the development of various contents for the improvement of self-health management of the elderly.

  • Because of the increased interest in health, medical care, and wellness, the utilization of health-related information resources, especially those found on the Internet, has been rapidly increasing. In addition, despite encountering an increasing number of health and medical-related reference questions in public libraries, public librarians feel limitations in their ability to perform these types of reference services. Therefore, this study proposed the cooperative network system model for vitalizing CHI Services, meaning that all the related agencies, including public libraries, medical libraries, medical institutions, and the health and medical community collaboratively provide consumer health information service. This study presented in detail the key elements of the cooperation model, the subject of cooperation, target sources for cooperation, the content of cooperation, operations of CHI-providing sites, operations and roles of Cooperation Centers, and directions for cooperating with commercial institutions.

Demands for Health Education through Internet in Middle and High School Students (중.고등학교 학생들의 인터넷을 이용한 보건교육 요구도)

  • Background: It is important to provide health education to students to ensure a healthy life. Using the internet for health education may be a way to overcome the practical barriers to health education such as time and content. This study was conducted to investigate the demands for health education using the internet. Subjects and methods: Six hundreds and twenty-four and male female students in middle and high schools, who lived on Gyeongju-si and Seongju-gun in Gyeongsangbuk-do province, were interviewed by means of structured questionnaires, from March 5 to March 28, 2003. Results: More than 90% of the subjects had their own computers, and nearly 38% of those possessing their own computers had accessed internet sites related to health and medicine. Middle school students and in particular, female students were more desirous for health education through e-mail. Regarding content, the three major topics which the respondents wanted to learn about were healthy lifestyles, growth and development, and disease prevention. In terms of the interval for providing educational materials, over half of the students wanted information once a week. Most of the students wanted to have the quantity of the material be one page. In addition, there were numerous additional topics requested by the students such as sleep and health, contraception and family planning, safety education, cancer prevention, emotional instability of juveniles, the utilization of medical care facilities, stress management, etc. Conclusion: The students had a desire for health education through the use of e-mail, and methods and materials should be developed for appropriate health education using the internet.

Nutrition Knowledge and Utilization of Information on Fast Food of Secondary School Students (대도시 중.고등학생의 패스트푸드에 대한 영양지식 및 정보 활용)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate nutrition knowledge and utilization of information on fast food of secondary school students in the two biggest cities, Seoul and Busan. Questionnaires were distributed to a total of 1,265 students (645 at 10 middle schools, 620 at 10 high schools). An average rate of correct answers on nutrition knowledge of fast food was 73.4%. General nutrition knowledge on fast food showed high percentage of correct answers, but the knowledge of vitamin and fiber on fast food was of low percentage. The scores of nutrition knowledge, the fast food (ie. chicken, pizza, gimbab, dukbokki, and ramyon) intake group with $'{\geq}1$ time/week' showed significantly (p<0.01) lower scores than those of the group with $'{\leq}1$ time/month'. The groups with higher interest in health and weight control had significantly (p<0.05) higher scores on nutrition knowledge than those of lower interest groups. Only 19.6% of the subjects had the experience of using the nutrition information for selecting fast food, but 66% of them wanted the developments of the internet-sites to provide information on fast food and on the relationship between fast food and health.
