  • In this study, two- and three-layer ceramic piezoelectric actuators were designed and simulated according to SUS316 thickness, actuator width, and mass using ATILA software in order to develop a piezoelectric actuator for haptic application. Numerical modelling based on the finite element method was performed to find the resonance frequencies and modal shapes of the actuator. The resonance frequency was affected by the thickness of the SUS316 plate and mass. On the other hand, the width of the actuator did not have a significant impact. Maximum displacements were generated at the center of a haptic three-layer ceramic piezoelectric actuator. The two-layer ceramic piezoelectric actuator with a mass of 2.6 g was suitable as $16.28{\mu}m$ at 265 Hz for haptic sensation application.

  • The fabrication process for ceramic fuel cell with a large electrode area was investigated. A cofired cell of two layer, electrolyte/anode, yielded a power of $200mW/cm^2$. Its performance loss was mainly due to iR drop in the anode side. The performance of the cofired of three layer. cathode/electrolyte/ anode, was much lower than that of two layer, which resulted from the large iR drop and overvoltage at the cathode side. Also a flat cell with a large area of $7.7{\times}10.8cm^2$ was fabricated successfully and tested using ceramic and metallic interconnectors. The large cell with metallic interconnectror showed a good performance of 0.6 V, 4.5 A.

  • The present paper investigates the simultaneous resonance behavior of spiral stiffened multilayer functionally graded (SSMFG) cylindrical shells with internal and external functionally graded stiffeners under the two-term large amplitude excitations. The structure is embedded within a generalized nonlinear viscoelastic foundation which is composed of a two-parameter Winkler-Pasternak foundation augmented by a Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic model with a nonlinear cubic stiffness. The cylindrical shell has three layers consist of ceramic, FGM, and metal. The exterior layer of the cylindrical shell is rich ceramic while the interior layer is rich metal and the functionally graded material layer is located between these layers. With regard to classical shells theory, von-Kármán equation, and Hook law, the relations of stress-strain are derived for shell and stiffeners. The spiral stiffeners of the cylindrical shell are modeled according to the smeared stiffener technique. According to the Galerkin method, the discretized motion equation is obtained. The simultaneous resonance is obtained using the multiple scales method. Finally, the influences of different material and geometrical parameters on the system resonances are investigated comprehensively.

  • ZrB2 ceramic and ZrB2 ceramic composites with the addition of SiC, WC, and SiC/WC are successfully synthesized by a spark plasma sintering method. During high-temperature oxidation, SiC additive form a SiO2 amorphous outer scale layer and SiC-deplete ZrO2 scale layer, which decrease the oxidation rate. WC addition forms WO3 during the oxidation process to result in a ZrO2/WO3 liquid sintering layer, which is known to improve the anti-oxidation effect. The addition of SiC and WC to ZrB2 reduces the oxygen effective diffusivity by one-fifth of that of ZrB2. The addition of both SiC and WC shows the formation of a SiO2 outer dense glass layer and ZrO2/WO3 layer so that the anti-oxidation effect is improved three times as much as that of ZrB2. Therefore, SiC- and WC-added ZrB2 has a lower two-order oxygen effective diffusivity than ZrB2; it improves the anti-oxidation performance 3 times as much as that of ZrB2.

  • A hybrid coextrusion and lamination process has been developed to fabricate macrochanneled bioceramic scaffolds. This process was mainly composed of three steps (i.e., coextrusion of thermoplastic compound, lamination, and thermal treatment), forming unique pore channels in dense bioceramic body. Pore channels were formed by removing carbon black material, while calcium phosphate or Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystals (TZP) with a calcium phosphate coating layer were used as dense body. Two kinds of pore structures were fabricated; that is, the pore channels were formed in uni- or three-directional array. Such macrochanneled bioceramic scaffolds exhibited the precisely controlled pore structure (pore size, porosity, and interconnection), offering excellent mechanical properties and cellular responses.

  • In this paper, the nonlinear vibration behavior of the spiral stiffened multilayer functionally graded (SSMFG) cylindrical shells exposed to the thermal environment and a uniformly distributed harmonic loading using a semi-analytical method is investigated. The cylindrical shell is surrounded by a nonlinear viscoelastic foundation consisting of a two-parameter Winkler-Pasternak foundation augmented by a Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic model with a nonlinear cubic stiffness. The distribution of temperature and material constitutive of the stiffeners are continuously changed through the thickness direction. The cylindrical shell has three layers consisting of metal, FGM, and ceramic. The interior layer of the cylindrical shell is rich in metal, while the exterior layer is rich in ceramic, and the FG material is located between two layers. The nonlinear vibration problem utilizing the smeared stiffeners technique, the von Kármán equations, and the Galerkin method has been solved. The multiple scales method is utilized to examine the nonlinear vibration behavior of SSMFG cylindrical shells. The considered resonant case is 1:3:9 internal resonance and subharmonic resonance of order 1/3. The influences of different material and geometrical parameters on the vibration behavior of SSMFG cylindrical shells are examined. The results show that the angles of stiffeners, temperature, and elastic foundation parameters have a strong effect on the vibration behaviors of the SSMFG cylindrical shells.

  • This work aims at characterizing silicon grains and its compacts. In order to remove iron silicon grains were washed with 5N hydrochloride at 60-7$0^{\circ}C$ for 170 hrs, and then followed the chemical analysis by atomic absorption spectrophotometer X-ray diffraction analysis SEM observation and specific surface area determination by B. E. T. Mixtures of graded silicon particles with two or three different sizes were made into packings by mechanical vibration. The mixtures were used to make compacts with 10 mm in diameter and 70mm in length by isostatically pressing at 1, 208 kg/$cm^2$ (20 kpsi) and 4, 255kg/$cm^2$ (60 kpsi) respectively. Bulk densities of packings and compacts were measured. A slip made of magnesium nitrate solution and fine silicon particles was spray-dried and then decomposed at 30$0^{\circ}C$ for the purpose of coating the uniform layer of magnesium oxide on the surface of particles. The results obtained are as follows: (1) About two thirds of iron content could be removed from silicon by washing silicon powders with hydrochloride. (2) Uniform layer of magnesium oxide on the surface of silicon could be prepared by spray-drying suspension and by decomposing it. (3) B. E. T. specific surface area of fine silicon particles was 2, 826.753$m^3$/kg. (4) In the binary system with two sizes of 40-53$\mu\textrm{m}$ particles and <10$\mu\textrm{m}$ particles the maximum bulk density of packing was 55% of theoretical value and that of compacts made at the pressure of 4, 255 kg./$cm^2$ (60 kpsi) was 73% of theoretical value. (5) In the ternary system with three sizes the maximum bulk density of packing was 1.43 g/$cm^3$and that of compacts was 1.80g/$cm^3$which is equivalent to 77.6% of theoretical value. The composition of the closest compact was consisted of 50% of 40-53$\mu\textrm{m}$ particles 20% of 10-30$\mu\textrm{m}$ particles and 30% of <10$\mu\textrm{m}$ parti-cles.

  • Three-dimensional (3D) multilayered Pt electrodes were fabricated to develop a porous electrode using a pattern-transfer printing process. The Pt thin films were deposited using a transferred sputtering pattern having a 250 nm line width on the substrate, and the uniform line patterns were efficiently transferred using our proposed method. Temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) analyses were used to evaluate the porosity of the electrodes. It was possible to distinguish between two resolved maxima at 168 and 227 ℃, which could be described in terms of desorption reactions on the Pt (111) planes. The results of the TPD analysis of the 3D and multilayered Pt electrodes prepared through transfer printing were compared to those of an electrode fabricated through screen printing using a commercial Pt-carbon paste commonly used as porous electrodes. It was confirmed that the 3D multilayered electrodes exhibited a desorption concentration approximately 100 times higher than that of the Pt-carbon composite electrode, and the desorption concentration increased by approximately 0.02 mg/mol per layer. The 3D multilayered electrode effectively functions as a porous electrode and a catalyst.
