Exploring the Possibilities of Character Education in Various Interaction-based Mentor Program: Focusing on "Becoming a Science Teacher" Activity (다양한 상호작용 기반의 멘토멘티 프로그램에서 나타난 인성 교육 가능성 탐색 -"과학 선생님 되어보기" 활동을 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the possibility of the character education and the concrete implementation process in the field of science education in accordance with the social demand for character education. Based on this purpose, the researchers tried to understand the specific character elements appearing in various science learning situations and to understand the qualities of each specific character elements that can be emphasized through science learning and the aspect of expression process in related learning situations. The researchers selected 11 students from the 7th and 8th graders in Seoul and developed and applied the 'Become a Science Teacher' mentor program in 2014 and 2015. Data collection was conducted through class recordings, mentor teachers' and assistant teacher's journal, artifacts, student journals, student portfolios, class listeners' essays for science class and analyzed qualitative data collected through constant comparison method. According to the result, we extracted 11 character elements and reorganized them into 16 specific character elements revealed in various learning situations based on the relationship between each character elements. The results of the study are eight specific character elements that can be emphasized through science learning and related learning situations. The eight specific character elements are 'responsibility for teaching behavior due to hierarchy of scientific knowledge structure, communication for forming scientific concept, empathic concern based on science learning experience, cooperation for promoting rationality of inquiry method, positive perception of scientific endeavor, respect for scientists' attitudes toward research, confidence in future scientific research, persistence in trial and error'. Based on the results of this study, we proposed the research methods of character in the field of science education in the future.

The status of 「Logic and Writing in Home Economics Education」 course and the students' perception about the course (「가정과 논리 및 논술」 교과목의 운영 실태 및 가정교육과 학생의 인식)

  • The purpose of the study was to describe the operating status of "Logic and Writing in Home Economics Education(HEE)" course and the students' perception about the course. For this study, the syllabuses of "Logic and Writing" course in HE education department were reviewed. The survey method was used in this descriptive study. Respondents in this study were 116 students taking the "Logic and Writing in Home Economics Education" course. Questionnaires from the students were collected through on-line and off-line mail. The results of the study were as the follows: First, goals of the "Logic and Writing in HE Education" course were as the follows in order: to enhance writing skill about various subjects related to Home Economics; to foster HE teachers' professionalism through persuasive power logically; to foster writing skill logically; to prepare HE teacher recruitment exam; and to foster teaching skills to enhance students' writing. The student evaluation methods in the course were mainly attendance, examination, tasks, discussion and presentation, and class participation. Second, degree of satisfaction of students taking the course was higher than average. The student respondents perceived that the course was helpful to improve their logical thinking and critical analytical skill, writing skill related to HE education and education, ability to express one's opinion clearly and exactly, understanding of the fundamental concept of logic and the structure and method of the essay, comprehensive understanding of HE education, and ability to solve the problems specifically. However, they responded that it was difficult to practice writing, to discuss and debate frequently, to follow uncertain assessment criteria, and to present frequently. They wanted the instructor to give the feedback more frequently.

Perception and Practices Regarding Food Allergy of Elementary and Middle School Nutritionists in the Jeonnam Area (전남지역 초등학교와 중학교 영양(교)사의 식품알레르기 관련 업무에 관한 인식 및 수행도)

  • As concerns have been raised about the increasing number of children with food allergies, the management of food allergies through the consideration of school meals is an emerging issue. This study investigated the perception and practices regarding food allergy of elementary and middle school nutrition teachers in the Jeonnam area. A total of 236 nutritionists/nutrition teachers participated in the survey and completed questionnaires. The foods most reported to cause allergic reactions were peach, eggs, peanuts, shrimps, mackerel, and milk. Participants reported that the major tasks to be completed for management of food allergies: the estimated number of students with food allergies, the offering of allergy-free or alternative foods and informing families of foods that may cause an allergic reaction. A majority of the participants (94%) recognized that the nutrition teacher has the primary role in managing students with food allergies in school. To manage these students, nutrition teachers mostly reported informing of allergic foods/ingredients in the school menu and the estimation of students with food allergy. The percentage of participants who experienced education programs on food allergies was 16.9%, whereas 97% of participants answered that a good professional education regarding allergies for nutrition teachers is required. The knowledge level evaluated with objective questions was significantly higher than the self-estimated knowledge level. In conclusion, nutrition teachers understood the tasks regarding food allergy thoroughly and that, the tasks are relatively under-practiced. To improve the management of food allergies in school meals, professional education programs regarding food allergies should be provided for nutrition teachers.

Technology and Home Economics Teachers' Perception of Participation in School Curriculum Organization and High School Credit System (기술·가정과 교사의 학교교육과정 편성 참여와 고교학점제에 대한 인식)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the secondary school technology and home economics teachers' perception of the school curriculum organization and high school credit system. For this purpose, the questionnaire data of 345 secondary technology and home economics teachers nationwide were analyzed through descriptive statistics, t-test, and F-test with SPSS 24. The research results were as follows. First, technology and home economics teachers recognized that current schools lacked the time to organize technology and home economics curriculum (61.1%) and the number of teachers (53%). Most of them have participated (62.0%) and were very willing to participate in the school curriculum organization (4.47, 89.9%). Second, technology and home economics teachers were aware of the high school credit system more than the average (3.34), and more negative (52.8%) than positive (37.7%). As a positive influence, students recognized career choices (3.88) and deepened professional content in their major fields (3.81). On the other hand, the negative impact was the decrease in choice due to non-entry subjects (3.90) and the difficulty in moving teachers to school (3.57). Third, in order to stably respond to the introduction of high school credit system, technology and home economics teachers recognized the importance of coordinating career elective courses (4.51), developing and disseminating teaching and learning materials for elective courses (4.46), separating technology and home economics (4.45), and providing training on evaluation methods and applications (4.44). This study would be useful to provide the basic information and data for the future development of technology and home economics curriculum at the national level based on high school credit system.

Middle Schooler's Perception of the Unit "Housing Education" of the 9th Grade Technology and Home Economics (주생활 영역 학습에 대한 중학생의 인식)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the perception of middle schooler's lesson of 9th grade "Housing Education" Questionnaire survey was conducted with 394 middle school students in Gyeongnam in 2006 and the dada analyzed by the descriptive statistics, t-test, One-way ANOVA, Duncan's multiple range test, Pearson correlation and multiple regression analysis by using SPSS 14. program. The result of this study were as follows. The unit 'Use of dwelling space' was perceived useful in real life, interesting in explanation & visual materials of the text, taught easily to understand the students and ranked highest in class satisfaction compared with the rest two units. The unit 'Indoor environment & equipment' was least interesting, most difficult and ranked lowest in class satisfaction. The unit 'House management & repair' was relatively interesting and easy, but not useful in real life, not much interesting in explanation & visual materials in text, taught difficult by teachers. The class satisfaction ranked second of the units. Female students perceived that the unit 'Use of dwelling space' was easy, but male students perceived that all the units were interesting in the explanation & visual materials in textbook, various teaching-learning methods, interesting experiment & practice, and was satisfied with the unit 'House management & repair'. As their academic achievement of "Technology & Home Economics" was lower, they perceived that the education contents and various experiment & practice were more difficult. The class satisfaction of middle schoolers about the unit "Housing Education" were affected by how easily the teacher taught the subject, making it more understandable, the level of difficulty of the contents and the level of interest of explanation & visual materials of text.

Changes in Korean Consumers' Perception on Food Preservatives by a Risk Communication Booklet

  • Food preservatives are very important food additives for the biological and chemical safety of processed foods. The purposes of this study were to investigate Korean consumer's perception and information needs on food preservatives, to develop an educational booklet as a risk communication material on food preservatives, and to assess the educational effect of the developed booklet. To understand perception on food preservatives, a self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted by 381 parents having elementary school students at Seoul and Geoynggi area in Korea. Based on the survey results, brain storming of the authors along with consultation from the professionals, we developed a risk communication booklet about food preservatives. It was exposed to 35 parents of elementary school children, and their evaluation was collected by using a questionnaire and analyzed statistically. Respondents considered food safety (44.8%) as the most important factor while purchasing processed foods. They still perceived food additives as the most hazardous one (41.5%), and among those, food preservatives were the most concerned (45.9%). Total 67.7% of the respondents considered the consumption of food preservatives as hazardous or very hazardous. However, 90.6% of respondents did not have any educational experience about food additives and food preservatives. Based on their information needs, a science-based booklet consisting of the definition, classification, safety, intake, and management of food preservatives was developed. When the booklet titled as 'Food preservatives, Just Know Them!' was exposed to the parents via elementary school teacher, their negative perceptions on food additives and food preservatives were changed positively by increasing the understanding level on preservatives from 18.9% to 90.9% and obtaining 72.7% positive answers on their safety. Therefore, it could be used as an effective risk communication material on food preservatives.

Elementary School Teachers' Educational Experiences, Readiness, and Needs for Science Education That Addresses the Risks Posed by Science and Technology (과학기술로 인해 발생할 수 있는 위험을 다루는 과학교육에 관한 초등교사의 교육 경험과 교육 준비도 및 요구도)

  • This study encompassed the responses of 284 elementary school teachers, focusing on their teaching experiences, readiness, and needs for science education concerning the risk posed by science and technology. The key findings are summarized as follows. First, a significant portion of teachers lacked prior experience in addressing risks associated with science and technology within their science education practices. Second, a greater number of teachers were aware of the inclusion of risk-related content in the 2022 revised science curriculum's achievement standards than those who were not. Third, in terms of teachers' understanding of risk perception, risk assessment, and risk management, they demonstrated a relatively high level of understanding of risk perception but a lower level of understanding of risk assessment. Fourth, most teachers had not undergone any formal education or training related to risk. Fifth, among the 10 objectives of risk education, teachers displayed the highest competence in teaching "information use" and "action skills," while their lowest competence was observed in "interpreting probabilities" and "evaluating risk assessment." Sixth, a majority of teachers believe that it is important to teach about the risks posed by science and technology in school science classes, with "action skills," "information use," and "decision-making skills" being considered the most important and "action skills," "information use," and "influence of mass media" being regarded as the most urgent. However, teachers anticipated difficulties in addressing risk in school science classes, including a lack of relevant educational materials, a lack of understanding of teaching theories related to risk education, and the relationship between science curriculum content and achievement standards. Seventh, as a result of calculating the educational needs for each of the 10 goals of risk education, "influence of risk perception," "decision-making skills," "action skills," and "evaluate risk assessment" were the priority needs of elementary school teachers.

Analysis of Perception of School Foodservice Facilities and Utilities in Gyeongnam Area by School Nutrition Teachers (Dietitians) -Comparison of School Foodservice Facilities and Improvement of Utilities in Schools- (경남지역 영양(교)사의 급식시설 설비에 대한 인지도 분석 -학교급식시설 현대화 사업 완료 학교와 미완료 학교의 비교를 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare perception of school foodservice facilities and utilities in dietitians and school nutrition teachers in the Gyeongnam area between schools that improved foodservice facilities and utilities versus those who did not. From July 23 to Aug 31, 2012, 391 questionnaires were distributed, and 289 questionnaires were obtained. A total of 275 questionnaires were used for the final analysis, excluding improper ones. The results of this study were as follows. First, among 275 schools, 90 schools (32.7%) improved school foodservice facilities and utilities while 175 schools (67.3%) did not. Second, schools with improved facilities had a more well-equipped receiving room (P<0.01), preparation room (P<0.001), dishwashing room (P<0.001), storage room for supplies (P<0.001), rest-room for school foodservice employees (P<0.05), locker room (P<0.01), shower room (P<0.001), laundry room (P<0.001), boiler room (P<0.05), and room for serving cart (P<0.05) than schools with no improvement. Third, total perception score of school foodservice facilities area from schools with improved facilities (1.71) was significantly higher than that (1.60) of school without improvement (P<0.001). Fourth, total satisfaction (3.32) of school foodservice facilities and utilities in school with improved facilities was significantly higher than that (2.62) of schools without improvement (P<0.01). Fifth, schools with improved facilities had a better equipped of floor (P<0.05), entrance (P<0.001), drain (P<0.001), water supply (P<0.01), lighting (P<0.001), hand washing (P<0.001), foodservice management room (P<0.001), locker room (P<0.001), rest-room and shower room (P<0.001), and preparation room (P<0.001) than schools without improvement. However, there was no significant difference in terms of walls and ceilings, windows, ventilation, and storage. In conclusion, school foodservice facilities and utilities improvement should conducted as soon as possible.

A Study on Introduction of Online Education to Provide Opportunities for Spreading University-level Program (고교-대학 연계 심화과정의 기회 확대 제공을 위한 온라인 교육 도입 방안 연구)

  • This paper studies on introduction of online education to provide opportunities for spreading university-level program by analyzing perception of high school students and teachers. The university-level program can be defined as the fulfillment of learning needs and the value offer of excellence education for outstanding high school students who want to improve their potential capabilities. For the study, a survey was conducted at high school students and teachers. As the result of the survey for high school students, the efficiency of education was the most important factor for the university-level program. The order of next important factors was the aid to entering university, the method of education, the satisfaction, and the recommendation of others. The result of high school teacher indicated that the efficiency of education was the most important factor as the high school students. The order of next important factors by high school teachers was the satisfaction, the aid to entering university, and the method of education. An activation of the university-level programs can be spread by analyzing the results of the survey. With the introduction of online education for the university-level program can conclude the guarantee of the right of studying and the reduction of education gap. This paper proposed an online education for the university-level program to guarantee the right of studying and to reduce the education gap.

Analysis on the Current status of e-Learning among Pre-Service Teachers (예비교사의 이러닝 인식 및 사용 교수·학습 전략 실태 분석)

  • It is important to understand how pre-service teachers perceive e-learning because their prior-experience with e-learning will have a great impact on their teaching after the graduation. Pre-service teachers (401 students) with cyber learning experience, which is a form of e-learning, were selected in 2004 in May and June. Survey was conducted regarding the instructional experience (working hours, tasks and evaluation, satisfaction about cyber learning and its academic achievement, difficulties and suggestions) and instructional methods (instructional activities, frequencies of interaction, strategies of interaction, collaborative activities, behaviors in the group instructional activities for knowledge development). The results are pre-service teachers tent to spend similar v slightly less working hours for cyber learning, similar or slightly less satisfaction level for the instruction and the academic achievement. It was interesting that female students were more negative than males students, considering female students have been more active in online discussion traditionally. Logical presentation of contents and instructional strategies for the cyber learning were the most wanting suggestions. E-mails and BBS for reference materials were the two most used functions in the online learning. The amount and types of tasks were satisfactory. Students did not interact freely during the group activities, they reported they did not learn much through the group activity. During the group work, they consider they do their roles with responsibility while they have slightly negative responses toward other members' contribution in the group activity. Off line meeting is strongly suggested.
