  • According to Piaget, children aged 11 are in the middle of concrete operation period and formal operation period. So, it is necessary to adopt the Learning Cycle Model (LCM) which helps students improve their cognitive development. After determining the test for the Science Concept of Matter (SCOM), the experimental group showed higher average than the comparative group in the post-test. In the sound understanding, the experimental group showed higher ratio than the comparative group. And in the ratio of imperfect, wrong understanding and no response, the experimental group was lower than the comparative group. On the questions that were needed the complicated inquiry, many students of both groups still couldn't find the fundamental cause. In forming the scientific conceptualization, there was a meaningful difference (p < .001) after post-test Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) with pre-test result. After determining the test for the Test Inquiry Science Process (TISP), the experimental group showed higher average than the comparative group in the post-test. In the category of basic inquiry process which is needed in concrete operation, there was a meaningful difference (p < .05). In the category of unified inquiry process which is needed in formal operation, they showed no meaningful difference (p > .05). Therefore, applying the LCM to the chapter of 'Solution and Dissolving' is more effective on improving the scientific conceptualization and on helping the concrete operation abilities than the teacher centered learning.

  • The purposes of this study were to analyze the within-group verbal interactions in Thinking Science activities and compare the characteristics of verbal interactions shown by the pupils as well as the differences in help by e teacher in Korea with those in the UK. For the purposes of this study, 16 pupils from comparable groups by cognitive level were selected from both countries. Verbal interactions and teacher help during group discussions were audio/ video taped and the types of students' interactions were classified into interactions related to problem solving, management of classroom loaming and others. The results of this study showed that the verbal interactions in Korean groups were more activated than those in the UK groups. However, the percentages of high level interactions such as metacognitive questions, elaborative suggestions and logical argumentations were higher in the UK groups than those in the Korean groups. Observation of the within-group activities revealed that the pupils of both countries shared some common ground in the following ways; neither recognized the need to formulate the hypothesis in the process of inquiry and that the procedures of discussion were dominated by the pupils of higher cognitive level as the discussion proceeded. It was also observed that the pupils in the UK were considerate in response to the questions posed by both their peers or the teacher, while the pupils in Korea were influenced by their prior knowledge in the subject. Analysis of the teacher help during the inquiry activities showed that the tendency fur the teacher to emphasize the process rather than the product in the procedures of discussion and the extent he/she allowed the pupils to think and consider were closely related to the characteristics of the teacher himself/herself and was found to be a point of commonality in both countries. However, the teachers in the UK revealed the tendency of trying to propose the task to the pupils in concrete and systematic ways and guide the discussion based on the thinking of the pupils, while those in Korea tried to use strategies designed to draw out active verbal interactions among the pupils.

  • This study investigated the influences of applying the Cognitive Conflict Process Model (the Procedural Teaching Model using Cognitive Conflict Strategy: Kwon, 1989) upon students' achievement and attitudes in a middle school science concept instruction. For the treatment group, science instruction to apply the Cognitive Conflict Process Model was used. For the control group, traditional instruction was used. Prior to instruction, students' pre-conceptions test and attitudes test related to the science were administered. After instruction, the above two tests and the regular examinations were measured. Also students' perceptions of their teacher's new teaching style was investigated by questionnaire. But, above all, the main purpose of this study was to investigate the principal accompanying matters of general application of the teaching model to science concept instruction rather than conceptual and attitudinal change. Therefore, this study identified necessary conditions of applying the teaching model to science instruction.

  • This study investigates how high school students with low academic achievement seek and use information. Participants were seven US students in an American Literature and Composition course of the $11^{th}$ grade Remedial Education Program who completed a class project that required comprehensive information seeking and use. Data were collected through comprehensive observation and individual interviews with each student, the teacher, and two library media specialists. Additionally, we gathered and analyzed the instructions the teacher and the two library media specialists provided and all documents each student produced to complete the class project. The process of data analysis was supported by QSR NVivo. The findings of the study implied that students experienced cognitive and affective challenges for their information seeking and use required for the tasks and suggested that technological and individual conferencing would motivate the students to continue their information seeking and use. We then conclude the study with some important implications that can be used as a basis for designing information literacy instructions for students with low academic achievement.

  • The article describes technologies in a unified methodological vein, since teaching based on them at the present stage is clearly eclectic in nature and depends on the individual - "biased" - professional attitude of teachers to technologies and those ideologies that gave rise to them. In this article, the future teacher will get acquainted with only some of these technologies. With the hope that this article will help the future teacher understand the essence of the technological approach, determine his pedagogical position and improve his pedagogical culture.

  • A lot of educators claim that the open education should be performed in elementary classroom, but it is true that they do not suggest the specific direction of practicing open education in case of mathematics subject. Although a project lesson is recommended, there is little case that suggests the direction of practice and the evaluation method of project lesson. Therefore this study searchs for the possibility of practicing open education in elementary mathematics classroom by reviewing the portfolio assessment and suggesting the specific case of applying the portfolio assessment to project lesson. A portfolio is a folder in which is recording solution process, student's self reflection, and teacher's comment, about topics and problems more than one. Students can see their own varying aspects and recognize their own merits and demerits, sincerities, and potentialities by portfolio assessment. Futheremore, teacher can both grasp the student's cognitive situation and give them the professional advice about the cognitive development. That is, they can perform the instruction underlining the learner's ability and personality, by identifying what Vygotsky calls 'the proximal zone of development' through portfolio assessment. Consequently, portfolio assessment is an alternative evaluation method for integrating process and product of learning, and can be used as an important tool for developing the learner's potential possibility of self-realization.
