  • Pan evaporation has been used as an indirect method for the estimation of reservoir evaporation. Therefore, in this study, pan evaporation estimation equations using only temperature data were suggested in the case that available meteorological data is limited. A formula for estimating the pan evaporation were suggested by comparing estimated pan evaporation with measured pan evaporation in 12 study areas in Korea. The suggested pan evaporation equations were verified in 44 study areas by comparing not only with temperature-based equations but also with equations using other meteorological data (temperature, wind speed, relative humidity, and sunshine duration). The study results indicate that the suggested equations in this study provide much better pan evaporation estimates, compared with other temperature-based equations. Overall, the suggested equations provide appropriate pan evaporation estimates in most of 56 study areas. Therefore, the suggested equations using only temperature data in this study are considered appropriate for the estimation of pan evaporation in Korea especially in the case that available meteorological data is limited. In the future, using the air temperature and pan evaporation data measured at the reservoir, further research is needed to examine the applicability of suggested equations for the estimation of reservoir evaporation.

  • Limited studies are available on the mathematical estimates of the compressive strength (CS) of glass fiber-embedded polymer (glass-FRP) compressive elements. The present study has endeavored to estimate the CS of glass-FRP normal strength concrete (NSTC) compression elements (glass-FRP-NSTC) employing two various methodologies; mathematical modeling and artificial neural networks (ANNs). The dataset of 288 glass-FRP-NSTC compression elements was constructed from the various testing investigations available in the literature. Diverse equations for CS of glass-FRP-NSTC compression elements suggested in the previous research studies were evaluated employing the constructed dataset to examine their correctness. A new mathematical equation for the CS of glass-FRP-NSTC compression elements was put forwarded employing the procedures of curve-fitting and general regression in MATLAB. The newly suggested ANN equation was calibrated for various hidden layers and neurons to secure the optimized estimates. The suggested equations reported a good correlation among themselves and presented precise estimates compared with the estimates of the equations available in the literature with R2= 0.769, and R2 =0.9702 for the mathematical and ANN equations, respectively. The statistical comparison of diverse factors for the estimates of the projected equations also authenticated their high correctness for apprehending the CS of glass-FRP-NSTC compression elements. A broad parametric examination employing the projected ANN equation was also performed to examine the effect of diverse factors of the glass-FRP-NSTC compression elements.

  • A fifth equation is required to determine the five independent elastic constants of a transversely isotropic rock from compression test of a single specimen. As an approximation proposed by Saint-Venant has been used for long time, it may cause an erroneous result in some cases, especially for specimen with low angle of anisotropy. Three equations were suggested replacing this traditional equation and proved to be applicable by the model analysis in the previous studies. As Saint-Venant's approximation is turned out the same as the first one of them, it has the characteristics that the apparent Young's modulus is monotonously increasing according to the anisotropic angle. The methodology to analyze the elastic constants from four independent strain measurements by uniaxial compressive test of a single standard specimen is concisely described, and the necessity and compatibility of new suggested equations are discussed. Saint-Venant's approximation can determine the elastic constants close to true values and other equations may be unnecessary in specimens with medium to large angle. Nevertheless, they may become applicable because they can produce the almost same amount. For the specimens of small angle of anisotropy, Saint-Venant's approximation may result in out of general ranges or thermodynamic constraints, but other suggested equations can produce the almost true value. Thus they can be applied before other alternative equation is known. The guide map constructed by model study may decide the most compatible one of the three equations.

  • The fractal study in river basin has been performed for the sinuosity of an individual stream and bifurcation of the stream network. The previous studies has suggested many methods or equations for the fractal dimension estimation in a river network. This study used those many equations for the estimation of fractal dimensions on the streams such as Bokha, Gonjiam, and Pocheon streams. The estimated dimensions are in the range of 1 to 1.359 for the individual stream and 1.634 to 2 for the stream network. The most of equations were suggested based on the assumption of self-similarity of a river basin for the individual stream and stream network. However, the real river basin could be characterized by self-affinity rather than self-similarity. Even though we estimate the dimensions by using many equations, we could not recommend which one is better equation for the estimation of fractal dimension. This might be from the self-similarity assumption of equations. Therefore, the assumption and research work of self-affinity will be needed for the appropriate estimation of fractal dimension in river basin.

  • In this paper an asymptotic numerical method named as Initial Value Method (IVM) is suggested to solve the singularly perturbed weakly coupled system of reaction-diffusion type second order ordinary differential equations with negative shift (delay) terms. In this method, the original problem of solving the second order system of equations is reduced to solving eight first order singularly perturbed differential equations without delay and one system of difference equations. These singularly perturbed problems are solved by the second order hybrid finite difference scheme. An error estimate for this method is derived by using supremum norm and it is of almost second order. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the theoretical results.

  • Existing equations of bed load transport are reviewed mainly considering the meaning and. role of variables used in the equations. The development of several equations and the problems of each equation are investigated by comparing their computed results against field or laboratory data. On the basis of the review remedies of each equation are suggested, and modified forms of existing equations are developed for wider application and improvement in the accuracy. Empirical parameters introduced in each equation are determined by testing them against Brownlie(1985)'s collected data, and discrepancy ranges of the refined equations are shown to see their degrees of accuracy.

  • Rail geometries such as cant, grade and curvature can be easily represented by means of a track coordinate system. In this analysis, in order to derive a dynamic and constraint equation of a wheelset, the track coordinate system is used as an intermediate stage. Dynamic and constraint equations of railway vehicle bodies except the wheelset are written in the Cartesian coordinate system as a conventional method. Therefore, whole dynamic equations of a railway vehicle are derived by combining wheelset dynamic equations and dynamic equations of railway vehicle bodies. Constraint equations and constraint Jacobians are newly derived for the track coordinate system. A process for numerical analysis is suggested for the derived dynamic and constraint equations of a railway vehicle. The proposed dynamic analysis of a railway vehicle is validated by comparison against results obtained from VI-RAIL analysis.

  • In the uniaxial compressive test of a single specimen of transversely isotropic rock, its 5 independent elastic constants can not be defined since maximum 4 independent strain measurements are available theoretically. In order to solve this problem, one equation proposed by Saint Venant in 19C and confirmed by Lekhnitskii through the test experiences has been used for long time. Accordign to authors' experiences, however, this equation turned out to give erroneous elastic constants in some cases. Three new equations are suggested and their compatibilities are discussed in this paper. As the results of the analyses of the models, Lekhnitskii's suggested equation is effective for the specimen with the high dip angle whereas it results in the large erred output for that with dip angle less than $25{\sim}30$. It was found that the effectivenesses of three suggested equations and their compatibilities are subject to the dip angle and not to the amounts of elastic constants. Guide map to the selection of the compatible one of those suggested equations is presented as a result of the study.

  • This paper is concerned with the application of perturbation method to the dynamic analysis of space structure floating in space. In dealing with the dynamics of space structure, the use of Lagrange's equations of motion in terms of quasi-coordinates were suggested to derive hybrid equations of motion for rigid-body translations and elastic vibrations. The perturbation method is then applied to the hybrid equations of motion along with discretization by means of admissible functions. This process is very tiresome. Recently, a new approach that applies the perturbation method to the Lagrange's equations directly was proposed and applied to the two-dimensional floating structure. In this paper, we propose the application of the perturbation method to the Lagrange's equations of motion in terms of quasi-coordinates. Theoretical derivations show the efficacy of the proposed method.

  • Shear modulus has been recognized as one of the important soil properties in dynamic analysis of ground and can be calculated from in situ measurement of shear wave velocity. Field seismic tests are the most accurate but expensive methods to investigate dynamic ground characteristics. Due to that reason, empirical equations for estimating the shear wave velocity are widely used rather than conducting in-situ tests. The most common equations are based on the N value obtained in conjuctions with a standard penetration test. In this paper, the field datas of standard penetration test and suspension PS logging measured in 126 sites of Korea were summarized and the correlation equations between N value and shear wave velocity are suggested.
