  • The objective of this study is to construct the watershed management system with link of the non-point sources model and to estimate delivery ratio duration curves for various pollutants. For the total water pollution load management system, non-point source model should be performed with the study of the characteristic about non-point sources and loadings of non-point source and the allotment of pollutant in each area. In this study, daily flow rates and delivered pollutant loads of Nakdong river basin are simulated with modified TANK model and minimum variance unbiased estimator and SWAT model. Based on the simulation results, flow duration curves, load duration curves, and delivery ratio duration curves have been established. Then GIS analysis is performed to obtain several hydrological geomorphic characteristics such as watershed area, stream length, watershed slope and runoff curve number. As a result, the SWAT simulation results show good agreements in terms of discharge, BOD, TN, TP but for more exact simulation should be kept studying about variables and parameters which are needed for simulation. And as a result of the characteristic discharges, pollutants loading with the runoff and delivery ratios, non-point sources effects were higher than point sources effects in the small-scale test bed of Nakdong river basin.

  • A Sensitivity analysis on the model parameters involved in the Clark watershed routing method is made to demonstrate the effect of each parameter on the magnitude of 50-year design flood for small urban streams. As for the rainfall parameter the time distribution pattern of design storm was selected. For short duration storms Huff, Yen & Chow and Japanese Central type distributions were selected and the Mononobe distribution of 24-hour design storm was also selected and tested for Clark method application. The effect of SCS runoff curve number for effective rainfall and the methods of subbasin division for time-area curve were also tested. The routing parameter, i.e. the storage constant(K), was found to be the dominating parameter once design storm is selected. A multiple regression formula for K correlated with the drainage area and main channel slope of the basin is proposed for the use in urban stream practice for the determination of design flood by Clark method.

  • For many rivers and streams, it has been observed that a single representative discharge may be used to determine the hydraulic geometry of a stable channel. This representative channel forming discharge has been given several names by different researchers, including bankfull, specified recurrence interval, and effective discharge. Therefore, The purpose of this study is to estimate channel forming discharge for study areas using the hydrological characteristic parameters and recording data, and to determine the hydraulic geometry relationships for the relating bankfull dimensions to bankfull discharge. In the Munmak and Seomyun gauging stations, the estimated bankfull discharges are found to have a return period of 1.8 and 1.5 years on the maximum annual series, respectively. The estimated effective discharges at those stations are largely different from bankfull discharges. The hydraulic geometry relationships between bankfull discharge and bankfull width, bankfull depth, velocity, bed slope are established. But the statistical parameters, such as R2, are calculated lower.

  • We investigated the distribution and geomorphic development of alluvial fans at Cheongdo- and Hweyang-eup(town) in the Cheongdo Basin, Gyeongsangbuk-do(Province) of Korea. The alluvial fans of study area are formed confluently to the E-W direction at the northern slope of the Mt. Namsan(840 m). They are classified into Higher surface, Middle surface, and Lower surface according to a relative height to a river bed. And the older alluvial fan is, the deeper gravel in the stream deposits is weathered. The magnitude of each surface composing of confluent fans is related to that of the drainage basin. So called fan-basin system of magnitude on the study area is on the positive(+) relation in the study area. The large fans over 1km in radius are found on the basin of andesite rock which is resistant to the weathering and erosion. Moreover there is no tectonic movement in the basin. It means the most important element influenced on the fan formation is not tectonic movement, but the Quaternary climatic change, which is the periglacial climate alternating glacial and interglacial stages during the Quaternary. Therefore alluvial fans would distribute in Korea overall influenced by the Quaternary climatic change.

  • Fishways are constructed to provide longitudinal connectivity of streams or rivers where their flow has been altered by in-stream structures such as dams or weirs. Nature-like fishways have an additional function of providing fish habitats. In the study, we estimated the role of a nature-like fishway (length: 700 m, slope: 1/100) for fish habitat by using two dominant species in the Sangju Weir, Nakdong River, to calculate the optimal ecological flow rate using Physical HABitat SIMulation (PHABSIM). To identify the dominant species that used the fishway, we conducted trap monitoring from August to November 2012 at the fishway exit. The dominant species were Zacco platypus and Opsariichthys uncirostric amurensis with a relative abundance of 62.1% and 35.9%, respectively. Optimal habitat suitability indices (HSIs) for Z. platypus and O. u. amurensis were calculated as 0.6-0.8 m/s (water velocity) and 0.2-0.4 m (water depth), and 0.5-0.7 m/s (water velocity) and 0.1-0.3 m (water depth), respectively. The optimal ecological flow rates (OEFs) for Z. platypus and O. u. amurensis were 1.6 and 1.7 cubic meter per second (CMS), respectively. The results of the study can be used in a management plan to increase the habitat function of nature-like fishways in the Sangju Weir. This methodology can be utilized as an appropriate tool that can determine the habitat function of all nature-like fishways.

  • The main goal of this study is to develop a multi-metric fishway assessment model (Mm-FA) and evaluate the efficiency of fishway. The Mm-FA model has three major fishway components with nine metrics: structural characteristics, hydraulic/hydrologic features, and biological attributes. The model was developed for diagnosing and assessing fishway efficiency and tested to Juksan Weir at the Yeongsan River Watershed. Structural characteristics of fishway included slope of the fishway (M1), ratios of fishway width to stream width (M2), and the proportion of orifice clogging and orifice size (M3). Hydraulic/hydrologic characteristics included depth of fishway entrance head (M4), depth of exit tail (M5), and current velocity of inner fishway (M6). Biological characteristics included fish species ratio of inner fishway to upper-lower weir (M7), fish length distribution (M8), and the proportion of migratory fish species to the total number of species (M9). Overall, the assessment of fishway efficiency showed the total score of the Mm-FA model was 25 in the Juksan Weir, indicating "good condition" by the criteria of the five-level classification system. The Mm-FA model may be used as a key tool for the assessment of fishway efficiency, especially on the 16 weirs constructed for the "Four Rivers Restoration Project" after a partial calibration of Mm-FA model.

  • The objectives of this study are to analyze the spatial site characteristics of existing tombs and the change in the pattern of spatial distributions of tombs over time. The spatial distributions of tombs located in Honam province along the Honam expressway were investigated by interpreting digital aerial photographs taken in two different points of time; 1990 and 2000. According to the results of the study, the tombs newly observed in 2000 photos were located closer to roads and villages than those found in the photos of 1990. This is a finding indicating that the accessibility of tombs has been more important consideration in determining the location of tomb sites. Also found were the gentle slopes of southern aspects to be favored as tomb sites. Based on the data sets of tombs locations and their topographic site characteristics, the probability function of tombs appearance in the study area was derived using the logistic regression analysis technique. As a result, tomb sites were classified as 74.7% by logistic regression. All of six input factors (elevation, slope, aspect, distance from the roads, the town and the stream, respectively) affected the probability of tombs appearance significantly.

  • This study selected soil erosion source area of Dechung basin by soil erosion estimation model and field survey for effective soil conservation planning and management. First, unit soil erosion amount of Dechung basin is analyzed using RUSLE (Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation) model based on DEM (Digital Elevation Model), soil map, landcover map and rainfall data. Soil erosion model is difficult to analyze the tracing route of soil particle and to consider the characteristics of bank condition and the types of crop, multidirectional field survey is necessary to choice the soil erosion source area. As the result of analysis of modeling value and field survey, Mujunamde-, Wondang-, Geumpyong stream are selected in the soil erosion source area of Dechung basin. Especially, these areas show steep slope in river boundary and cultivation condition of crop is also weakness to soil erosion in the field survey.

  • The purpose of this study are to compare existing presence-absence predictive models and to predict suitable habitat for Goral (Nemorhaedus caudatus raddeanus) that is an endangered and protected species in Seoraksan national park using the best model among existing predictive models. The methods of this study are as follows. First, 375 location data and 9 environmental data layers were implemented to build a model. Secondly, 4 existing presence-absence models : Generalized Linear Model (GLM), Generalized Addictive Model (GAM), Classification and Regression Tree (CART), and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) were tested to predict the Goal habitat. Thirdly, ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) and Kappa statistics were used to calculate a model performance. Lastly, we verified models and created habitat suitability maps. The ROC AUC (Area Under the Curve) and Kappa values were 0.697/0.266 (GLM), 0.729/0.313 (GAM), 0.776/0.453 (CART), and 0.858/0.559 (ANN). Therefore, ANN was selected as the best model among 4 models. The models showed that elevation, slope, and distance to stream were the significant factors for Goal habitat. The ratio of predicted area of ANN using a threshold was 31.29%, but the area decreased when human effect was considered. We need to investigate the difference of various models to build a suitable wildlife habitat model under a given condition.
