  • Background: School is a primary health education setting for adolescents and the continuous support should be provided to renew school health education curriculum correspondent to cultural changes in Korean society. Objectives: This study was conducted to identify the principals and teachers' health education needs for their students and to analyze their conceptual map for health education curriculum at school. Methods: The sample size of the preliminary study was 321 of the teachers in elementary, middle, and high school, and that of the main study was 355 middle school principals and teachers over the country. The self-administered mailing survey was conducted to collect the available health education topics in the preliminary study, to identify the factor structure of the health education topics and to analyze the conceptual properties on health education with exploratory factor analysis and multidimensional scaling analysis in SPSS 12.0. Results: A total of 21 health education topics were collected from the preliminary survey and 31 topics were, comprehensively, generated for the main survey. In exploratory factor analysis, seven factors were generated in 1.0 or greater Eigen value standard. The seven factors were 'life health promotion,' 'disease prevention and drug control,' 'bulling and aggression prevention,' 'injury and sexual harassment prevention,' human-efficacy and regulation,' 'health protection for adolescence,' and 'alcohol and tobacco control.' The educational need scores were the highest in 'human-efficacy and regulation' and 'injury and sexual harassment prevention.' The two-dimensional cooperates were generated for the 31 health education topics and the two dimensional properties which divided the conceptual space were 'health-safety' for one and 'public/environmental-individual/personal' for the other. That is, middle school principals and teachers primarily, understand the health education curriculum in the sense of 'health vs. safety' and 'public/environmental vs individual/personal.' Conclusions: Health education curriculum and textbook should be developed based on teachers' needs and conditions for health education in school fields. The field-based health education programs or textbook would make more possible problem-solving health education for youth in real school fields.

  • The empirical mass discrepancy-acceleration (MDA) relation of disk galaxies provides a key test for models of galactic dynamics. In terms of modified laws of gravity and/or inertia, the MDA relation quantifies the transition from Newtonian to modified dynamics at low centripetal accelerations $a_c{\lesssim}10^{-10}ms^{-2}$. As yet, neither dynamical models based on dark matter nor proposed modifications of the laws of gravity/inertia have predicted the functional form of the MDA relation. In this work, I revisit the MDA data and compare them to four different theoretical scaling laws. Three of these scaling laws are entirely empirical; the fourth one - the "simple ${\mu}$" function of Modified Newtonian Dynamics - derives from a toy model of gravity based on massive gravitons (the "graviton picture"). All theoretical MDA relations comprise one free parameter of the dimension of an acceleration, Milgrom's constant aM. I find that the "simple ${\mu}$" function provides a good fit to the data free of notable systematic residuals and provides the best fit among the four scaling laws tested. The best-fit value of Milgrom's constant is $a_M=(1.06{\pm}0.05){\times}10^{-10}ms^{-2}$. Given the successful prediction of the functional form of the MDA relation, plus an overall agreement with the observed kinematics of stellar systems spanning eight orders of magnitude in size and 14 orders of magnitude in mass, I conclude that the "graviton picture" is sufficient (albeit probably not a necessary nor unique approach) to describe galactic dynamics on all scales well beyond the scale of the solar system. This suggests that, at least on galactic scales, gravity behaves as if it was mediated by massive particles.

  • A $8{\times}8$ foveated (log-polar) retina chip for edge detection has been designed and fabricated using CMOS technology. Retina chip performs photo-input sensing, edge extraction and motion detection and we focused edge extraction. The pixel distribution follows the log-polar transform having more resolution in the center than in the periphery and can reduce image information selectively. This kind of structure has been already employed in simple image sensors for normal cameras, but never in edge detection retina chip. A scaling mechanism is needed due to the different pixel size from circumference to circumference. A mechanism for current scaling in this research is channel width scaling of MOS transistor. The designed chip has been fabricated using standard $1.5{\mu}m$ single-poly double-metal CMOS technology.

  • We derive a modified version of cubic convolution interpolation for the enlargement or reduction of digital images by arbitrary scaling factors. The proposed scaling scheme is used to resize various format pictures in the transcoding system, which transforms the bitstream compressed at a bit rate, such as the HD bitstream, into another bit rate stream. In many applications such as the transcoder, the resolution conversion is very important for changing the image size while the scaled image maintains high quality. We focus on the modification of the scaler kernel according to the relation between formats of the original and the resized image. In the modification, various formats defined in MPEG standards are considered. We show experimental results that demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed interpolation method.

  • Adaptive bitrate (ABR) streaming technology has become an important and prevalent feature in many multimedia delivery systems, with content providers such as Netflix and Amazon using ABR streaming to increase bandwidth efficiency and provide the maximum user experience when channel conditions are not ideal. Where such systems could see improvement is in the delivery of live video with a closed loop cognitive control of video encoding. In this paper, we present streaming camera system which provides spatially and temporally adaptive video streams, learning the user's preferences in order to make intelligent scaling decisions. The system employs a hardware based H.264/AVC encoder for video compression. The encoding parameters can be configured by the user or by the cognitive system on behalf of the user when the bandwidth changes. A cognitive video client developed in this study learns the user's preferences (i.e. video size over frame rate) over time and intelligently adapts encoding parameters when the channel conditions change. It has been demonstrated that the cognitive decision system developed has the ability to control video bandwidth by altering the spatial and temporal resolution, as well as the ability to make scaling decisions

  • The integration of digital circuits has a tight relation with the scaling down of silicon technology. The continuous scaling down of the feature size of CMOS devices enters the nanoscale, which results in such destructive effects as short channel effects. Consequently, efforts to replace silicon technology with efficient substitutes have been made. The carbon nanotube field-effect transistor (CNTFET) is one of the most promising replacements for this purpose because of its essential characteristics. Various digital CNTFET-based circuits, such as standard logic cells, have been designed and the results demonstrate improvements in the delay and energy consumption of these circuits. In this paper, a new CNTFET-based 5-input XOR gate based on a novel design method is proposed and simulated using the HSPICE tool based on the compact SPICE model for the CNTFET at the 32-nm technology node. The proposed method leads to improvements in performance and device count compared to the conventional CMOS-style design.

  • This paper proposed signal decomposition and multiresolution representation through wavelet transform using wavelet orthonormal basis. And it suggested most appropriate filter for scaling function in multiresoltion representation and compared two compression method, arithmetic coding and Huffman coding. Results are as follows 1. Daub18 coefficient is most appropriate in computing time, energy compaction, image quality. 2. In case of image browsing that should be small in size and good for recognition, it is reasonable to decompose to 3 scale using pyramidal algorithm. 3. For the case of progressive transmittion where requires most grateful image reconstruction from least number of sampls or reconstruction at any target rate, I embedded the data in order of significance after scaling to 5 step. 4. Medical images such as information loss is fatal have to be compressed by lossless method. As a result from compressing 5 scaled data through arithmetic coding and Huffman coding, I obtained that arithmetic coding is better than huffman coding in processing time and compression ratio. And in case of arithmetic coding I could compress to 38% to original image data.

  • A new small scaling Lateral Trench Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (SSLTIGBT) was proposed to improve the characteristics of the device. The entire electrode of the LTIGBT was replaced with a trench-type electrode. The LTIGBT was designed so that the width of device was no more than 10$\mu\textrm{m}$. The latch-up current densities were improved by 4.5 and 7.6 times, respectively, compared to those of the same sifted conventional LTIGBT and the conventional LTIGBT which has the width of 17$\mu\textrm{m}$. The enhanced latch-up capability of the SSLTIGBT was obtained due to the fact that the hole current in the device reaches the cathode via the p+ cathode layer underneath the n+ cathode layer, directly. The forward blocking voltage of the SSLTIGBT was 125 V. At the same size, those of the conventional LTIGBT and the conventional LTIGBT with the width of 17$\mu\textrm{m}$ were 65 V and 105 V, respectively. Because the proposed device was constructed of trench-type electrodes, the electric field in the device were crowded to trench oxide. Thus, the punch through breakdown of LTEIGBT occurred late.

  • 1T1C DRAM has been facing technological and physical constraints that make more difficult their further scaling. Thus there are much industrial interests for alternative technologies that exploit new devices and concepts to go beyond the 1T1C DRAM technology, to allow better scaling, and to enlarge the memory performance. The technologies of DRAM cell are changing from 1T1C cell type to capacitor-less 1T-gain cell type for more scalable cell size. But floating body cell (FBC) of 1T-gain DRAM has weak retention properties than 1T1C DRAM. FET-type 1T-FeRAM is not adequate for long term nonvolatile applications, but could be a good alternative for the short term retention applications of DRAM. The proposed nonvolatile refresh scheme is based on utilizing the short nonvolatile retention properties of 1T-FeRAM in both after power-off and power-on operation condition.

  • Two rice varieties, 'Oochikara' with large grain and 'Hwayeongbyeo' and their progenies (F$_1$, F$_2$, B$_1$ and B$_2$) were tested to understand gene action of morphological traits of rice grain and their relationships. The evaluated traits were 1,000-grain weight, grain length, width, thickness, length-width ratio and chalkiness of brown rice. Correlation between grain weight and chalkiness was highly significant in the all progenies, and grain length were not associated with width and thickness in an F$_2$ population. Scaling test and jonit scaling test revealed that inheritance of grain traits were fitted to additive-dominance model without epistasis. Additive effects for the traits were much greater than the dominance effects.
