This paper describes a smart structural system, which uses smart materials for real-time monitoring and active control of bolted-joints in steel structures. The goal of this research is to reduce the possibility of failure and the cost of maintenance of steel structures such as bridges, electricity pylons, steel lattice towers and so on. The concept of the smart structural system combines impedance based health monitoring techniques with a shape memory alloy (SMA) washer to restore the tension of the loosened bolt. The impedance-based structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques were used to detect loosened bolts in bolted-joints. By comparing electrical impedance signatures measured from a potentially damage structure with baseline data obtained from the pristine structure, the bolt loosening damage could be detected. An outlier analysis, using generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution, providing optimal decision boundaries, has been carried out for more systematic damage detection. Once the loosening damage was detected in the bolted joint, the external heater, which was bonded to the SMA washer, actuated the washer. Then, the heated SMA washer expanded axially and adjusted the bolt tension to restore the lost torque. Additionally, temperature variation due to the heater was compensated by applying the effective frequency shift (EFS) algorithm to improve the performance of the diagnostic results. An experimental study was conducted by integrating the piezoelectric material based structural health monitoring and the SMA-based active control function on a bolted joint, after which the performance of the smart 'self-monitoring and self-healing bolted joint system' was demonstrated.
In the three-dimensional domain image expressed with two-dimensional slice images, such as fMRI images and multi-slice CT images, we propose the three-dimensional domain automatic segmentation for the purpose of extracting region. In this paper, we segmented each domain from the fMRI images of the head of people and monkey. We used the neural network "Pulse-Coupled Neural Network" which is one of the models of visual cortex of the brain based on the knowledge from neurophysiology as the technique. By using this technique, we can segment the region without any learning. Then, we reported the result of division of each domain and extraction to the fMRI slice images of human's head using "three-dimensional Pulse-Coupled Neural Network" which is arranged and created the neuron in the shape of a three-dimensional lattice.
The effect of VC addition on the microstructural evolution of Fe-TiC cermet has been investigated. The microstructures of the Fe-TiC varied with the amount of VC addition. The addition of 1wt% VC enhanced the instability of liquid-solid interface ; the dissolving interface showed round shape instead of facetted one which was ascribed to the increase of lattice mismatch between TiC and solid-solution carbide. in the speci-men with 10wt% VC the new set of solid-solution carbide grains of uniform and small size was formed in-side coarse TiC particles by diffusion induced recrystallizatin (DIR). With increasing the heat-treatment time fine recrystallized grains were dispersed homogeneously in the matrix and resulted in the increase in fracture strength.
In this study, the charactersistics of horizontal drains used to stabilize the dredged fill are investigated experimentally by doing tensile strength test, discharge capacity test, and filter clogging test. The types of the drains selected for the study are filament type (Tyre-E), embossed type(Type-P) and heat bonded cubic type with the thickness 10mm(Type-010) and 5mm(Type-05). The results of tensile strength and discharge capacity test show that the performance of drain Type-O10 was better than the other drains. This is caused by the fact that the lattice shape core of drain Type-O10 has strong rigidity and minimizes the loss of the sectional area of discharge with increased confining pressure. Analyzing the compatibility of filters by the results of the strength characteristics test and clogging test, the filter of filament type drain produced with polyester clothed polyamide performed well.
We demonstrate the growth of a sheet-like ZnO membrane on ZnO nano rod layers. The growth process is composed of 3 steps of ZnO seed formation, ZnO nano rod growth and sheet-like ZnO membrane formation on those nano rods. To confirm the fundamental growth mechanism, the lattice structures of each step were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) measurement. Analysis of the relation between the texture coefficient and the surface shape of the ZnO membrane on the ZnO nano rods shows that the surface morphology of ZnO nano structures can be controlled using the temperature of the growing solution and the concentration of the chemical solution.
Two modifications of the ${\alpha}\;and\;{\beta}$ forms of propyl mercaptan nickel(II) cluster, [$Ni_6(SCH_2CH_2CH_3)_{12}$], have been synthesized and their crystal structures have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The alkyl groups are away from $Ni_6$ ring in $\alpha$ form whereas they are near to the Ni atom in $\beta$ form. The distance of Ni-H in $\beta$ form [2.576(5) $\AA$] is much shorter than that in $\alpha$ form [3.101(2) $\AA$]. In the crystal lattice of $\beta$ form, the whole structure forms a flower shape.
ZnO nanowires with tetrapod shape were formed on the surface of the sample by direct melt oxidation of Al-Zn alloy at $1000^{\circ}C$ in air. X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern revealed that the ZnO nanowires had wurtzite structure of hexagonal phase. Any other element except Zn and O was not detected in energy dispersive X-ray spectrum. The c- and a-axis lattice constants estimated from the XRD pattern were 0.520 and 0.325 nm, respectively. These are in well accordance with those of bulk ZnO single crystal, indicating high quality crystallinity. The green light emission at a wavelength of 510 nm was observed from the nanowires at room temperature, which was ascribed to high density of oxygen vacancies in nanowires.
The $Co_{3}Ti$ phase hardens appreciably by the fine precipitation of disordered fcc Co-rich phase upon aging after quenching from solution annealing temperature. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) observations revealed that the precipitates are platelet in shape, lying nearly parallel to the {100} planes of the $Ll_{2}$-ordered matrix, and perfectly coherent with the matrix lattice at the beginning of aging. The high temperature strength increases appreciably with the fine precipitation of disordered Co-rich phase over the whole temperature range investigated. TEM observations of the under-aged and deformed alloys revealed that superdislocations are pinned by precipitates indicating an attractive interaction between dislocations and precipitates. In the over-aged state, thin twins are introduced in the fcc Co-rich precipitates during deformation.
The zoospores of Polymyxa graminis known as vector of barley yellow mosaic virus(BYMV) were found from the rootlets of diseased barley plants. The X-bodies in the lower epidermis of diseased leaf tissues were reddish under fluorescence microscopy. The shape of virus particles was flexuous rod and 300-1,000 nm in length. The pinwheel structures, cylindrical inclusion bodies, ring-form inclusion bodies, and crystalline lattice-like structure were found together with virus particles in the cytoplasm of diseased leaf tissues. Generally, intracellular organelles in the diseased barley leaf tissues infected with BYMV were either not well-developed or degenerated.
In this work, we had synthesis the GaN powder by direct reaction between Ga and NH$_3$at the temperature range of 1000∼1150$^{\circ}C$, and investigated the reaction condition dependence of the GaN yield and some properties of GaN powder. The synthesized powder had Platelet and prismatic shape and showed hexagonal crystalline structure with the lattice constants of a= 3.1895 ${\AA}$, c= 5.18394 ${\AA}$, and the ratio of c/a = 1.6253. The GaN powder synthesis processes were examined based on the oxidation process of mater, and found as combined with mass transport process for the initial stage and diffusion-limited reaction for the extended reaction.
