  • We consider the $P_\lambda\;^M$ service policy for an M/G/1 queue in which the service rate is increased from 1 to M at the exponential setup time after the level of workload exceeds $\lambda$. The stationary distribution of the workload is explicitly obtained through the level crossing argument.

  • In this work the AC loss measurement setup based on an iron core background magnet, not used in a conventional one, has been successfully developed, To prove its validity, a round-robin test for the same Bi-2223 tape sample among three institutes has been done. The results show that test data from the developed setup well agree with losses measured at different institutes.

  • This paper identifies diffraction-induced wave setup when waves enter into a harbor of constant depth through a breakwater gap narrower than one wave length. It is well known, for this case, that the waves in the lee of the breakwater propagate as if from a point source and the wave crest lines are approximated well by semicircular arcs. Wave height decreases in accordance with conservation of energy; thereby resulting in an appreciable setup of the surface. (omitted)

  • The prediction of wave setup is an important part of modelling coastal inundation and flooding in coastal rivers but there are still some gaps in our knowledge particularly with respect to the conditions in river entrances. One of the reasons that wave setup is still not fully understood, almost fifty years after it was first observed in the field and subsequently reported by Thorndike Saville (1961) and by Dorrestein (1961), is that it is difficult to measure accurately in the field. • It has been prevalent to be serviced through WLAN(Wireless Local Area Network) as a variety of mobile devices have been introduced. If the number of mobile devices increases rapidly for the network access in a limited range of ESS(Extended Service Set), a lengthy connection delays are induced due to the initial link setup process of the IEEE 802.11i which is WLAN security standard. In this paper, we propose a new initial link setup protocol which can be executed in the ESS area of WLAN.

  • Intelligent investment in setup cost reduction and process reliability improvement is crucial to an emerging integrated lean six sigma practice today. This study examines a cost-minimizing problem of jointly determining production lot size, setup cost reduction, and process reliability improvement decisions for a manufacturer with an imperfect production process. We develop models for previously untapped discrete shipping in a supply chain context as well as continuous shipping and solve them optimally using differential calculus and nonlinear programming. We also conduct analytic and numerical sensitivity analyses to provide various important managerial insights into practices.

  • We consider the discrete-time $Geo^x/G/1$ queues under N-policy with multiple vacations (a single vacation) and setup time. In this queueing system, the server takes multiple vacations (a single vacation) whenever the system becomes empty, and he begins to serve the customers after setup time only if the queue length is at least a predetermined threshold value N. Using the heuristic approach, we derive the mean waiting time for both vacation models. We demonstrate that the heuristic approach is also useful for the discrete-time queues.

  • We consider the problem of scheduling identical jobs with sequence-independent setup times on parallel machines. The objective is to minimize total completion times. We present the pseudopolynomial-time algorithm for the case with a fixed number of machines and an efficient approximation algorithm for our problem with identical setup times, which is known to be NP-hard even for the two-machine case.

  • This paper considers identical parallel machine scheduling problem. Each job has a processing time. due date. weight and family type. If a different type of job is followed by prior job. a family setup is incurred. A two phased heuristic is presented for minimizing the sum of weighted tardiness. In the first phase. using roiling horizon technique. group each job into same family and schedule each family. In the second phase. assign each job to machines using schedule obtained in the first phase. Extensive computational experiments and comparisons among other algorithms are carried out to show the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, we determine optimal reduction in the lead time and setup cost for some stochastic inventory models. And we propose more general model that allow the backorder rate as a control variable. We first assume that the lead time demand follows a normal distribution. And we assume that the backorder rate is dependent on the length of lead time through the amount of shortages. The stochastic models analyzed in this paper are the classical continuous and periodic review policy models with a mixture of backorders and lost sales. For each of these models, we provide a sufficient conditions for the uniqueness of the optimal operating policy. We also develop algorithms for solving these models and provide illustrative numerical examples.
