Economic Decision of Specification Limits for a Ham Production Process - An Industrial Case Study -

  • An economic design of specification limits for production process of ham is considered for a given process mean in a complete inspection plan. Each ham is inspected, and if it meets the specification, it is accepted. The ham less than the lower specification limit are changed another products or at a discounted price, and those greater than the upper specification limit are reworked. A profit model is developed which involves selling price, production cost, rework cost and the cost which is incurred by imperfect quality. Methods for finding the optimal specification limits are derived for the case of piecewise linear loss function with an industrial case study.

  • Due to fossil fuel depletion and environmental pollution, H2 production from organic waste has received an increased attention. In this study, we present an integrated process for the H2 production from biogas and evaluate the economic feasibility and sustainability via rigorous techno-economic analysis (TEA) and life-cycle assessment (LCA). Through the TEA, we determine the minimum H2 selling price using discounted cash flow analysis and investigate the main cost drivers. The environmental impact of the proposed process is quantified via LCA.

  • Consider a canning process where cans are filled with an expensive ingredient. Cans weighting above the specified limit are sold in a regular market for a fixed price, and underfilled cans are emptied and refilled at the expense of a reprocessing cost. In this paper, the effect of measurement error on the determination of the optimal process mean for a canning process is examined. It is assumed that the quantity X of ingredient in a can is normally distributed with unknown mean and known variance, and the observed value Y of X is also normally distributed with known mean and variance. A profit model is constructed which involves selling price. cost of ingredients, reprocessing cost. and cost from an accepted nonconforming can, and methods of finding the optimal process mean and the cutoff value on Y are presented. It is shown that the optimal process mean increases. and the expected profit decreases when the measurement error is relatively large in comparison to the process variance.

  • Lignocellulosic biomass is a renewable resource for production of biofuels and biochemicals. Furfural (FF) is an important platform chemical catalytically derived from the hemicellulose fraction of biomass. Tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFA) is a FF derivative and can be used as an eco-friendly solvent with thermal and chemical stability. Despite large numbers of experimental studies for catalytic conversion of FF to THFA, few research have conducted on the economic feasibility for large-scale THFA production from FF. At the stage of assessment of the potential for commercialization of conversion technology, a large-scale process study is required to identify technological bottleneck and to obtain information for solving scale-up problems. In this study, process simulation and technoeconomic evaluation for catalytic conversion of FF to THFA are performed, as the following three steps: integrated process design, heat integration, and economic evaluation. First, a large-scale process including conversion and separation processes is designed based on experimental results. When the FF processing rate is 255 tonnes per day, the FF-to-THFA yields are 63.2~67.9 mol%. After heat integration, the heating requirements are reduced by 14.4~16.4%. Finally, we analyze the cost drivers and calculate minimum selling price of THFA by economic evaluation. The minimum selling price of THFA for the developed process are $2,120~2,340 per tonne, which are close to the current THFA market price.

Trigeneration Based on Solid Oxide Fuel Cells Driven by Macroalgal Biogas (거대조류 바이오가스를 연료로 하는 고체산화물 연료전지를 이용한 삼중발전)

  • In this paper, the commercial feasibility of trigeneration, producing heat, power, and hydrogen (CHHP) and using biogas derived from macroalgae (i.e., seaweed biomass feedstock), are investigated. For this purpose, a commercial scale trigeneration process, consisting of three MW solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), gas turbine, and organic Rankine cycle, is designed conceptually and simulated using Aspen plus, a commercial process simulator. To produce hydrogen, a solid oxide fuel cell system is re-designed by the removal of after-burner and the addition of a water-gas shift reactor. The cost of each unit operation equipment in the process is estimated through the calculated heat and mass balances from simulation, with the techno-economic analysis following through. The designed CHHP process produces 2.3 MW of net power and 50 kg hr-1 of hydrogen with an efficiency of 37% using 2 ton hr-1 of biogas from 3.47 ton hr-1 (dry basis) of brown algae as feedstock. Based on these results, a realistic scenario is evaluated economically and the breakeven electricity selling price (BESP) is calculated. The calculated BESP is ¢10.45 kWh-1, which is comparable to or better than the conventional power generation. This means that the CHHP process based on SOFC can be a viable alternative when the technical targets on SOFC are reached.

Ontology describing Process Information for Web Services Discovery (웹 서비스 발견을 위해 프로세스 정보를 기술하는 온톨로지)

  • Until now, most semantic web service discovery research has been carried out using either Web Service Modeling Ontology (WSMO) or a profile of OWL-based Web Service ontology (OWL-S). However, such efforts have focused primarily on service name and input/output ontology. Thus, the internal information of a service has not been utilized, and queries regarding internal information such as 'Find book-selling services allowing payment after delivery' are not addressed. This study outlines the development of TM-S (Topic Maps for Service) ontology and TMS-QL (TM-S Query Language), two novel technologies that address the aforementioned issues in semantic web service discovery research. TM-S ontology describes the behavior of services using process information and consists of three sub-ontologies: process signature ontology, process structure ontology and process concept ontology. TMS-QL allows users to describe service discovery requests.

Effects of Limited Capacity on Tolerance Design for Products With N-Type Quality Characteristics (망목특성을 갖는 제품의 공차 설계에서 제한된 생산 용량의 효과 분석)

  • Tolerance design has been identified as an important research area and a number of models have been proposed in the literature. This paper investigates the effect of limited capacity on tolerance design for products with nominal-the-best type (N-type) quality characteristics. The model is developed under the assumption that the reprocessed and nonreprocessed items are produced by the same manufacturing process and therefore their quality characteristics are identically and independently distributed. Profit models are constructed which involve four price/cost components; selling price, cost incurred by imperfect quality, reprocessing and quality inspection costs. Methods of finding the optimal tolerance limits are presented, and a numerical example is given. Sensitivity analyses are also performed to study the effect of a process standard deviation on this model.

  • This study suggests a new paradigm of fashion merchandising as an environmental change of the fashion industry. The study has the pattern of a literature study and it is analyzed through journals, professional books, fashion magazines, and newspapers. Examined are the environmental changes of the fashion industry, the condition, and problems of the merchandising process that is executed currently, as well as an examination of the concept of fashion merchandising, Concepts and changes for new fashion merchandising strategies are suggested that are helpful for academics and fashion companies. This paper defines the concept of new fashion merchandising as the integrated management activity of planning, development, and selling fashion products to create a profit for the company with the satisfaction of the target customers. This study proposes the pursuance of integrated merchandising, the change of product planning and product development, and the strengthening of store-centered retail merchandising in order to change the direction of fashion merchandising.

  • The objective of this study is on evaluation process of resort hotel management strategy. Therefore, in this study, we find try to a successful implemantation of resort hotel feasibility study and management strategy by systematizing and materialinzing the theory of resort hotel. And we have also investigated and analyzed the real status of resort hotel and then worked out the problem, and estabilished a plan for feasibility determination of resort hotel, he results of this study are as follow: 1) We need to characterize, matenance, develop the benefits of resort hotel. 2) We need to know how to establish model and facilities of resort hotel. 3) We have to inclease quality and quantity of employee's service. 4) We need to effort to satisfy customer's needs and wants through improvising and enlarging facilities of resort hotel. 5) We need to specialize the quality of F & B division. 6) We need to improve the hotel image, promote sales through promotion tools like avertisement, publicity, personel selling, sales promotion.
