  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship among suicidal ideation, parental attachment, and self-identity of college students. Methods: This study was designed as a descriptive correlational research. The participants were 314 college students in Gyeongbuk province. Data were collected from September 23 to Oct 5 in 2009 using a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient using SPSS WIN (Version 12.0). Results: Suicidal ideation showed negative correlations with maternal and paternal attachment (r=-.20, p<.001; r=-.24, p<.001, respectively) as well as self-identity (r=-.37, p<.001). Self-identity had positive correlations with maternal and attachment (r=.16, p=.006; r=.23, p<.001, respectively). Conclusion: The findings suggest that suicidal ideation may be decreased when college students have higher parental attachment and self-identity. Strategies to improve parental attachment and self-identity are needed in near future.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to analyze the mediating effect of self-identity on the relationship between aggression and school life adaptation of early adolescents. Methods: This study used the 5th-year data of the Korean Children & Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) including 159 middle school 2nd students from single-parent families. The data was analyzed with open source statistics program R 3.5.0 to determine whether self-identity had a mediating effect on school life adaptation as an independent variable. Results: A moderate correlation was found among aggression, self-identity, and school life adaptation. As a result of the Sobel test, self-identity of early adolescents demonstrated a significant mediating effect on the relationship between aggression and school life adaptation. Conclusions: Given the significant mediating factor of self-identity, the strategies for early adolescents to boost their overall school life adaptation should be considered through intervention programs that help to enhance their self-identity.

There were significant differences in depression by perceived health status and perceived economic status. Depression had a moderate negative correlation with self-identity (r=-.49, p<.001) and a moderate positive correlation with menopausal symptoms (r=.57, p<.001). Menopausal psychological symptoms were the factor most affecting depression and explained 37% of the variance in depression. A total of 51% of variance in depression was explained by menopausal symptoms (psychological and physical), self-identity, and perceived economic status.
