A relationship between Self-Directed Learning Readiness and Learning Style of university students majored in science and engineering (이공계 대학생의 자기주도학습준비도와 학습유형의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the self-directed learning readiness of university students' majored in science and engineering as life-long learners, and to analyze the relationship between self-directed learning readiness and learning style. Participants of this study are 142 students majored science and engineering in H university of Chung-nam province to participate in taking self-directed learning readiness tests and Kolb's learning style tests. The results of this study are as follows: First, the average of overall participants' self-directed learning readiness is 3.41, which is possibly regarded as 'an average' according to Guglielmino & Guglielmino (1991)'s interpretation of scores. Second, among four basic scales of participants' learning styles, the highest is found in Active Experiment (AE), the lowest is found in Abstract Conceptualization (AC). In addition, the highest thing of the four learning styles found among the participants is divergers (36.6%) and the lowest is convergers (13.4%). Finally, this study compares the high-level and low-level groups of self-directed learning readiness score with learning style. there is a statistically significant correlation between the score of self-directed learning readiness and CE, AC (p=.01). Therefore, self-directed learning readiness is related to learning style.

The Effects of Science Lessons Using Creative Activities on Scientific Concepts and Self Directed Learning Ability (창의적 체험활동 프로그램이 과학개념 및 자기주도적 학습능력에 미치는 효과)

  • This study is to find out that the effects of a creative experience activity program to scientific concepts and self-directed learning skills. This study has been aimed at 2 class 40 students of 4th grade in D metropolitan city A elementary school in 2015, one class 20 students are the research group to apply Scientific research program using creative experience activity, another class 20 students were comparison groups to apply general science classes. The related class section of this study is 4th grade 2 semester of science 4 chapters, 'The Earth and the moon' This section is in fourth grade elementary science curriculum revision in 2009 is a Sections to learn for the first time about astronomical area. Target research group in club activities as part of the creative activities implemented using scientific inquiry and analyzed the results. In addition, in order to better research based on the results of this study as follows. First, the science curriculum in elementary schools, as well as applied research about the creative experience activity classes in other subjects is required. The ongoing research is needed to classes utilizing the characteristics of creative experience activities in several subjects of the elementary school curriculum. Second, Creative experiential learning is only effective when it is done consistently, it is worth studying for long periods of time.

Effectiveness of Cooperative Learning on Nursing Students' Performance and Experience (협동학습이 간호학생의 학습성과와 수업경험의 질에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effectiveness of the JigsawⅣ cooperative learning in a facilitative communication class of nursing students. Achievement, communication skill, self-directed learning and experience during the class were measured. Method: This study was a pretest and posttest design with two subject groups. 43 students were in experimental (JigsawⅣ) group and 47 ones were in control (general small discussion) group. Classes were conducted over a 6-week period. The collected data was analyzed by the SPSS 12.0 program. Result: After taking part in the educational program, the experimental group had significantly more improvement in communication skill (F=6.81, p=.002) and self-directed learning (F=11.81, p=.000). In addition, the experimental group showed significantly higher scores for concentration in the class (t=2.26, p=.27), positive emotional state (t=3.01, p=.003) and active participation (t=2.78, p=.007) compared to the control group. However, the achievement between the two groups was not significantly different (F=3.29, p=.073). Conclusion: The findings of this study show that JigsawⅣ cooperative learning has positive effects in improvement of communication skill and self-directed learning. Also, students were excited and interested in the class during cooperative learning. Based on these findings, the author suggests developing additional educational programs focusing on nursing students.

The Effects of Instructional Strategy using Thinking Maps focused on Drawing in Elementary School Science (초등과학에서 그리기 중점의 사고지도를 활용한 수업 전략의 효과)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop instructional strategy which utilizes thinking maps focused on drawing as a measure to enhance science learning motivation, self-directed learning activity and science academic achievement of learners, and to examine the effects of its application. The target unit for this study is 'life cycle of plants' in the fourth grade of elementary school. Two classes of 4th grades of elementary school were selected and divided into two groups. The learners of experimental group have completed thinking map by drawing a picture to express the results to be observed and measured, and used it to arrange the learning contents. The result of this study is as follows. First, it is proven that using thinking maps focused on drawing actually helped improving the motivation of learners to study science. Second, it is proven that this strategy was effective to change their self-directed learning ability in positive ways. Third, it contributed to the improvement of learners' science academic achievement. We found out that the application of this strategy enabled them to enjoy the mapping using drawing, to be immersed in learning, to better recognize the scientific concepts and the structure of learning contents, and to have a positive awareness of the usefulness of thinking maps focused on drawing.

Problem-Solving Ability, Self-Directed Learning Ability and Confidence of Core Fundamental Nursing Skill Performance of Nursing Students (간호대학생의 문제해결능력, 자기주도학습능력 및 핵심기본간호술 수행자신감)

  • Purpose: This study was to conducted to search for factors influencing the confidence of core fundamental nursing skill performance (CC) based on comparative analysis, of the relationship between problem solving ability (PS), self-directed learning ability (SL) and CC of nursing students. Methods: This study was conducted based on questionnaires (208) given to senior nursing students. Data were analyzed by the t-test, ANNOVA and Scheffe's test. Moreover, Pearson's correlation coefficient and hierarchical regression were conducted to determine the relationship between items. Results: Proving Solving ability differed significantly in SC. In addition, satisfaction with core fundamental nursing skills (SL) differed significantly by gender, academic performance of last semester, support for nursing, and SC. Moreover, PS was found to have a normal relationship with SL and CC, and SL was found to have a normal relationship with CC. Conclusion: Education strategy should include methods of increasing the PS of student to improve CC in nursing education. Moreover, SL education should be used to increase nursing tasks and effective adaptation to their circumstances as a clinical nurse after graduation.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of flipped learning among university students in Korea: Self-directed learning, learning motivation, efficacy, and learning achievement (국내 대학생에게 적용한 플립러닝의 체계적 고찰 및 메타분석 - 자기주도학습, 학습동기, 효능감, 학업성취도를 중심으로 -)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to provide a systematic review and meta-analysis of research on flipped learning effects applied to university students. Methods: The random effect model was applied to 21 papers to calculate the effect size. To verify the moderation effect, a meta regression analysis and meta ANOVA were performed. Publication bias was verified through a funnel plot, and then an Egger's regression test was conducted. Results: The overall average effect size was .69 (95% CI: .51-.87), showing a median effect size, which was statistically significant. The outcome variables were in the order of learning motivation (Hedges' g=.83), self-directed learning (Hedges' g=.78), learning achievement (Hedges' g=.66), and efficacy (Hedges' g=.50), which were statistically significant. Conclusion: Flipped learning was found to be statistically significant in improving self-directed learning, learning motivation, efficacy, and learning achievement amng university students. It is suggestd that this method be actively applied in university education.

Analysis of Changes in University Students' Awareness of Online Classes from 2020 to 2022 during the COVID-19 Pandemic

  • The purpose of this study was to examine changes in students' awareness of online classes in university education over the three years from 2020 to 2022 during the COVID-19 pandemic. To achieve this, various aspects of online classes, including self-directed learning, interaction (between instructors and learners, and among learners), evaluation of the learning process and outcomes, and the learning environment and control of learning, were analyzed for changes from 2020 to 2022. The study included 534 university students enrolled in University A who participated in online classes in both 2020 and 2021. The results indicated that there was no significant difference in the awareness of self-directed learning, but significant differences were found in the awareness of interaction, evaluation of the learning process and outcomes, and the challenge related to learning environment and control of learning in online classes, which were higher in 2021 and 2022 than in 2020. Additionally, detailed changes in awareness of online classes showed significant differences in specific aspects of awareness in university online classes. In summary, students' awareness of online classes improved in 2021 and 2022 compared to 2020, as learners adapted to online classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, it was observed that difficulties in the challenge related to learning environment and control of learning were overcome in 2021. Based on these research findings, several implications for improving the design and operating strategies of effective online classes in future university education were proposed.

Influence of Education Program Satisfaction on Core Competence and Self-directed Competence: A Study of Mokpo National Maritime University (사회맞춤형학과 교육 프로그램의 만족도가 핵심역량 및 자기주도역량에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 - 목포해양대학교 사례를 중심으로 -)

  • Mokpo National Maritime University's Maritime College operates education and training programs that allow students to adapt to the specifics of ships and the oceans. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of student satisfaction on core competencies and self-directed competency through the operation of socially customized education programs. We surveyed the leaders in industry-university cooperation+ education programs, and selected TALK+, an education program capable of statistical analysis, as the focus of our analysis. The TALK+ program connects people in charge of communication with those in charge of reflecting the peculiarities of maritime universities. Data were collected using satisfaction surveys that returned 259 results. These were analyzed using a 5-point Likert scale that showed a high level of satisfaction with an average of 4 points or more. The satisfaction level showed that there is positive correlation between satisfaction levels and core competency and self-directed competency. In addition, a linear regression analysis was performed, and the results showed that satisfaction has a statistically significant effect on the improvement of core competencies and self-directed competencies (p<0.001). Through this study, it was confirmed that efforts to improve the satisfaction level and develop various comparisons method and programs are necessary.

The Factors affecting self-directed learning ability of nursing students who experienced online lectures

  • This study attempted to find out the factors affecting the self-directed learning ability of nursing students who took online lectures. The research method was a structured questionnaire survey targeting 2nd to 4th grade nursing college students, and the analysis method was analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis. As a result of the study, the self-directed learning ability of nursing college students was an average of 3.48 points out of 5 points, and it was found that learning immersion had the greatest effect on self-directed learning ability. Based on the results of this study, it will be necessary to establish a quality education system and the efforts of instructors who apply various lecture methods or customized lecture programs so that learners can immerse themselves in learning in order to improve learners' self-directed learning ability.

The Effects of Problem-based Learning Applied to the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory Classes (문제 중심 학습(PBL)을 적용한 「무기화학실험」수업의 효과)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of PBL (Problem-based Learning) strategy applied to the "Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory" class. Especially, the changes in 'self-directed learning ability' and 'attitudes toward science' of undergraduate students were examined. In addition, perception on PBL problem and the PBL classes were investigated. The results of this study were as follows: First, after the course, 'self-directed learning ability' and 'attitude toward science' of students were significantly improved (p < .05). There were significant improvements in every sub-categories except 'self-confidence as a learner' for 'self directed learning ability' and every sub-categories except 'usefulness of science' for 'attitude toward science'. Second, the students expressed that PBL strategy provided opportunities to learn self-directively and responsibly, but the process of defining the problem was difficult. Finally on the survey toward PBL strategy, the students responded that PBL problems were authentic and helpful to learn problem solving ability. In conclusion, PBL laboratory course is effective for developing self-directed learning ability and positive attitude toward science.
