Purpose: According to Lazarus & Folkman (1984), appraising a stressor as a threat is associated with negative psychological and physical adjustment, whereas appraising a stressor as a challenge is positive psychological and physical adjustment. This study examined how cognitive appraisal of PTCA(heart disease threat and treatment appraisal) related to the cardiac risk reduction behaviors(smoking cessation, low salt and low cholesterol diet, regular exercise and stress management) 6 weeks following discharge. Method: Data were collected from 50 subjects with successful primary PTCA. Result: Heart disease threat was negative related to treatment appraisal (r=-0.240, p=0.046). Psychological well-being was negative related to heart disease threat (r=-0.317, p=0.012) and positive related to treatment appraisal(r=0.402, p=0.002). The cardiac risk reduction behaviors score was negative related to heart disease threat(r= -0.296, p=0.018) and positive related to treatment appraisal(r=-0.291, p=0.020). Conclusion: More negative appraisal was related to lower the cardiac risk reduction behaviors score. But more positive appraisal was related to higher the cardiac risk reduction behaviors score. So, there is a need to develop the cognitive-behavioral intevention that increase the coping strategy to replace with positive appraisal.
The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of college life adjustment on emotional intelligence in dental hygiene students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 550 dental hygiene students in Daegu from May to June, 2016. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects, emotional intelligence scale, and student adaptation to college questionnaire using Likert 5 point scale. Data were analyzed by t-test, one way ANOVA, post hoc $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test, Pearson's correlation test, and multiple regression test. Results: The mean scores of emotional intelligence 3.40 points and college life adjustment 3.14 points were above average. Every sub-field of emotional intelligence had static correlation, and there was a close correlation between college life adjustment and every specific field. The academic adjustment (r=0.515) and institutional adjustment (r=0.458) showed strong correlation with the emotional intelligence. The higher the emotional intelligence score was, the higher the college life adjustment was. Variables having statistically significant influence on college life adjustment included economic status, major satisfaction, self-emotional, use of emotional and emotional control (37.7%, p<0.001). Conclusions: Emotional intelligence played a significant role in dental hygiene students to adapt well with the demands of college life. The college should provide the efficient programs in the curriculum that helps enhance emotional intelligence of the students.
Purpose: This study was to examine the ego-identity of nursing students and their adjustment to home and university in an effort to identify the correlation of their ego-identity to their adjustability and lay the foundation for providing better personality education to them. Method: The subjects in this study were 400 nursing students at H and S universities in south Chungcheong province. The instruments used in this study were Park A-cheong(2003)'s Korean-version Ego-Identity Inventory and Jeong Jonggweon(1998)'s Home and School Adjustment Inventory. For data analysis, SPSS/PC+ Package was used, and statistical data on frequency and percentage were obtained. Besides, t-test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficient were employed. Result: The findings of the study were as follows: The nursing students investigated got a 3.46 and 3.53 in ego-identity and family life adjustment respectively out of possible five points, which were both above the average. Their score in school adjustment was 2.89, which wasn't high. As for connections between general characteristics and ego-identity, their academic school year, their type of residence, presence or absence of parents and their birth order made no statistically significant differences to their ego-identity. But as to motivation of choosing nursing, the students who chose their major at their own option were the best in that regard. Their adjustment to family life made no significant differences, and regarding school adjustment, ego-identity was better among those who lived in a lodging house or dormitory(F=4.01, p<.05) and who chose their major at their own option(F=4.88, p<.01). In addition, those with better ego-identity were better adjusted to home and school. Conclusion: As the above-mentioned findings suggested that nursing educators should teach students by mapping out specific plans to enhance the ego-identity of students and facilitate their school adjustment, and full-fledged nurses should be produced by teaching students to build the right work ethics and become qualified as a professional.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explain the relationship between fatigue and other variables(perceived health status, marital adjustment and stress), and define the main factors influencing fatigue in middle aged women. Methods: Data were collected by self-reported questionnaires from 212 middle aged women. Data analysis was done with the SPSS 11.0 pc+ program for descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The mean score of fatigue was 2.30(${\pm}0.46$), perceived health status was 2.82(${\pm}0.68$), marital adjustment was 2.86(${\pm}0.44$), and stress was 2.43(${\pm}0.61$). There were significant correlations between fatigue and the other variables(r=.56-.21, p=.00). The major factors that affect fatigue in middle aged women were stress, perceived health status, and marital adjustment, which explained 35.2% of fatigue. Conclusion: These variables have an effect on middle aged women's fatigue. Therefore, these findings can provide the basis for the development of nursing interventions to manage fatigue.
The purpose of this study was to assess pain, discomfort, depression and coping patterns and the relations between these in chronic arthritis patients. The sampling method was a purposive sampling technique. 1) Who have been diagnosed as having chronic arthritis and. 2) Who were at the out patients clinic of rheumatoid arthritis departments of one University hospital in seoul between september, 11, 1993 to september, 18, 1993. The instruments used for this study were Graphic Rating Scales of pain, discomfort level of the activities of daily living(ADL) developed by Lee, Eun Ok and The Beck Depression inventory. The research used to measure coping patterns was a tool developed by the present study researcher. Analysis of data was done frequency, Pearson correlation coefficients, ANOVA, regression and ANCOVA. The results were summerlized as follows ; 1. Female exceed male patients in number and onset of joint pain were more prevalent in the age groups of the 40s and the 50s. The average duration of suffering from the pain were seven years six mounths. 2. The mean pain score : The mean sensory score was 119mm and the affective score was 109mm. 3. The discomfort level of ADL, the mean score was 2.95 out of a possible score of 5.0 and depression syndrome subjects were 62.2%. 4. The coping responses for each pattern were as follows : 1) "Active coping" mean score was 2.28. 2) "Wishful coping" mean score was 2.89. 3) "Receptive coping" mean score was 3.31. 4) "Negative coping" mean score was 1.82. 5. Significant differences were found in age, religion, marriage status and the coping patterns of patients. 1) In the coping pattern of "receptive coping", the score of the age groups of the 50s were higher than that of 20s, and in the coping pattern of "negative coping", the score of the age groups of the 20s were higher than other age groups. 2) In the coping pattern of "wishful coping", the score of the christian were higher than other religion groups. 3) In the coping pattern of "negative coping", the score of the marrieds were lower than other groups. 6. Patients who scored low on factor 2, wishful coping, were much more likely to report having pain sensory than patioets scoring high on this factor. 7. Patients who scored high on factor 4, negative coping, were significantly more likely to report having pain sensory than patients scoring high on this factor. Consider overall, chronic arthritis patients report using a wide varity of strategies, certain strategies such as receptive, wishful and active coping are used frequently, whereas other strategies such as negative coping are rarely used. One of the most important finding of present study is that the reported use of coping strategies is related to adjustment to a chronic pain problem. The present study suggests that negative coping is related to poor emotional adjustment as assessed by depression, but not pain ratings. Considered overall, this pattern of findings suggests that counseling patients to decreased their use of negative coping may be useful. The present study has a number of limitations. First, the sample is restricted to chronic arthritis patients. Weather chronic pain patients suffering from other types of pain syndromes use similar coping strategies needs to be determined in subsequent research. Second, the tool of coping pattern must be studied further to obtain reliability.
Purpose: This study was done to identify the level of adjustment to hospital life, hospitalization recognition and hospital-related fear by school-aged children, and investigate the influence of hospitalization recognition and hospital-related fear on the hospital life of these children. Methods: Participants were 112 three to six grade students who were hospitalized from 3 to 7 days at one of two children's hospital. Date were collected from September 2015 to March 2016. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, multiple regression. Results: The mean score for adjustment to hospital life was $3.43{\pm}0.40$ of 5, for hospitalization recognition, $2.98{\pm}0.46$ of 4 and for hospital-related fear, $1.37{\pm}0.28$ of 3. Factors affecting adjustment to hospital life were hospital-related fear (${\beta}=-.28$, p=.002) and hospitalization recognition (${\beta}=.27$, p=.003). These factors explained 17% of the variance in adjustment to hospital life. Conclusion: Results indicate that adjustment to hospital life by school-aged children is not sufficient enough for them to cope with illnesses and hospitalization. Therefore, to improve adjustment to hospital life by school-aged children, nursing interventions that focus on increasing hospitalization recognition and decreasing hospital-related fear need to be developed.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the children's school adjustment on family strength, social support and parental efficacy according to their parents perception and to submit basic material to recognize the necessity of strengthening parental capability for enhancing children's adaptation to school. The summary of the results of the study was as below. All of the subjects who recognized family strength, social support and parental efficacy according to their parents perception showed middle score over 3. The parents who recognized family strength and parental efficacy were examined as the factors which influence children's adjustment to school. These showed that children's adjustment to school is better when parents recognized that family strength is higher, and when parents recognized that parental efficacy is higher. But when parents recognized social support, no meaningful influence appeared, so if the parents who are first social supporters of school-aged children understand the importance of children's adjustment to school, which has a high adaptability with high social support, and recognize the difference of the influence of social support on the children's adjustment to school and home, it could be the factor to reduce children's adjustment problems at school.
The main purpose of this study was to identify the relationship of self efficacy and social support to the psychosocial adjustment in people with epilepsy. Data were collected from October 1 to October 15, 1999 from 101 people with epilepsy who were being treated regularly at one of the university hospitals located in Seoul. The research instruments were a questionnaire to gather demographic and disease-specific data, the Epilepsy Psycho- Social Effects Scale developed by Chaplin et al(1990), the Epilepsy Self Efficacy Scale developed by DiIorio et al(1992a) and translated by Park(1999), the Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire developed by Norbeck et al(1981) and translated by Oh(1985). Data were analyzed using the SPSS program. The results are as follow : 1. Of the 14 psychosocial adjustment areas, 75 of 101 subjects experienced problems in ten or more areas and 28 in all 14 areas. The severity of the psychosocial adjustment problem was moderate or more in six areas. 2. The score for self efficacy was an average of 1103.86 out of a possible 1800, for social support 117.57 for total functional out of a possible 720, and 48.21 for total network out of a possible 264. There were an average of five people on the network. The main network people were parents, brothers and sisters, spouse, friends. 3. Of the 14 psychosocial adjustment areas, six areas correlated with self efficacy and 'problems with taking medication' area had a negative correlation with social support. In conclusion, people with epilepsy have various problems in psychosocial adjustment. Nursing interventions using self efficacy should be developed to improve psychosocial adjustment in people with epilepsy. Also, instruments and interventions for regimen-specific supports which are suitable for epilepsy should be developed.
본 연구의 목적은 의과대학 의예과 신입생들의 셀프리더십, 자아존중감, 대인관계유능감, 대학생활적응의 관계를 분석하여 대학생활적응을 보다 잘 할 수 있도록 돕기 위한 기초자료를 제공하는 것이다. 본 연구의 대상은 C지역 의과대학 의예과 신입생 131명이었다. 연구결과, 셀프리더십은 평균 3.86(±0.61), 자아존중감과 대인관계유능감, 대학생활적응은 평균 3.86(±.61), 3.44(±.48), 3.78(±.52)이였고, 성별은 차이가 없었다(p>0.05). 셀프리더십, 자아존중감, 대인관계유능감, 대학생활적응간에는 정적 상관관계가 나타났다(p<0.05). 셀프리더십은 자기존중감과 대인관계유능감을 매개로 하여 대학생활적응에 간접적으로 영향을 미치고, 자기존중감과 대인관계유능감은 대학생활적응에 직접적으로 영향을 미치며, 자기존중감은 대인관계유능감을 통해 대학생활적응에 간접적으로 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 의예과 신입생들의 대학생활적응에 영향을 미치는 요인에 대한 정보를 제공하고, 대학생활적응을 위하여 자아존중감은 필수적으로 교육해야 하는 내용임을 확인하였다. 본 연구가 대학생활적응을 돕기 위한 관련 교육프로그램을 개발하고 활성화하는데 활용될 수 있기는 기대한다.
Objectives : We examined quality of life, psychosocial adjustments to illness, changes in sexual functioning, and prevalence of psychiatric disorders in AIDS patients compared to patients with chronic hepatitis B virus infection (CHB). Methods : Thirty-one men with AIDS and 50 men with CHB were enrolled. The Short-Form 12-Item Health Survey (SF-12), the Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale (PAIS), and the Changes in Sexual Functioning Questionnaire short form (CSFQ-14) were administered. Results on these assessments were compared between the 31 AIDS patients and 50 CHB patients. The Structured Clinical Interview for DSMIV (SCID) was administered to determine the psychiatric diagnosis only for the AIDS patients. Results : The Physical Component Summary score (PCS) was lower in AIDS patients than in CHB patients (p<0.001). In the section examining sexual relationships, AIDS patients exhibited a lower level of adjustment (p<0.05) and had more changes in sexual function (p<0.05) than did CHB patients. Administration of the SCID to AIDS patients indicated that the lifetime prevalence of any psychiatric disorder was 56.7% ; 43.3% for mood disorders, 33.3% for alcohol use disorders, 26.7% for anxiety disorders, and 20% for adjustment disorder. Patients who had experienced any psychiatric disorder had more severe psychosocial distress (p=0.004) and evidenced a lower level of overall psychosocial adjustment (p=0.030) than patients who had not. Conclusion : We showed that AIDS patients have a high prevalence of psychiatric disorders, and that AIDS patients with psychiatric disorders were particularly low in levels of psychosocial adjustment. Thus, careful attention should be given to psychiatric aspects of AIDS patients emphasizing the early diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders.
