  • The purpose of study was to examine the effects of an emotional intelligence development program on the stress recognition and stress coping of elementary school children. The subjects of this study are 24 fourth grade students who were selected based on the level of their emotional intelligence and stress recognition(level under the mean). They were divided into an experimental group and a control group, and each group had 12 students. The quantitative results of this study are as follows: First, the experimental-group increased in the level of emotional intelligence and showed a significant increase in the sub-areas of emotional intelligence(emotional recognition and expression, thought promotion) than the control group. Second, the experimental group decreased in the level of stress recognition and showed a significant decrease in the sub-areas of stress recognition(parents, family environment, friends, schoolworks) than the control group. Third, the experimental group improved in stress coping and showed a significant improvement in the sub-areas of stress coping(active coping, passive/avoidant coping, and social support seeking coping) than the control group. This study shows that emotional intelligence development program can be an effective tool for the change of stress recognition and stress coping of elementary school children.

The collected data was analyzed using the i-STATistics program(Kim & Baker, 2012). The study results were as followings: First, female students had higher scores than male students in the savoring test, the happiness test and the optimism test. And there were significant gender differences in savoring, happiness and optimism. Second, there was a significantly positive correlation between savoring and happiness(home environment, self-attributes, abilities, and interpersonal relationships) at the level of p<0.001. And the regression analysis result showed that savoring contains explanatory power of 60.70% for happiness. Third, there was a significantly positive correlation between savoring and optimism(expectations for the future) at the level of p<0.001. And the regression analysis result showed that savoring contains explanatory power of 66.51% for optimism. The result of this study shows that savoring has a high correlation to happiness and optimism. Happiness and optimism of children can be enhanced by increasing savoring. • This research was carried out to see that to what extent KSD reaction can be related to types of sociometric status, and it was carried out on the basis of an hypothesis that KSD reactions of elementary school students in high grades(4th, 5th, 6th grades) would vary according to gender and 5 types of sociometric status, For that purpose, sociometry which were developed by Ahn Iehwan(2007) and KSD, were implemented with students of 20 classes (5 classes of 4th grade, 5 classes of 5th grade and 10 classes of 6th grade) at an elementary school in A city. Number of students surveyed was 366 and it was not exactly the stratified cluster sampling method. To verify 3 hypotheses, independent samples t-test, one way ANOVA, discriminant analysis were made. As a result, there was statistically significant difference in action factor and characteristics factor among 3 factors of KSD reaction by gender, but there was not statistically significant difference in dynamics factor. The result of one way ANOVA showed there was statistically significant difference in characteristics factor and dynamics factor among female students, but there was not statistically significant difference in action factor. Therefore, it was understood that characteristics factor of KSD reaction was closely related to gender difference and types of sociometric status. From the result of this research, it was considered necessary to review KSD scoring system suggested by 田中志帆(2009). And lastly, it was observed that KSD reaction was not effective in evaluating sociometry, and a new approach to the projective drawing test was suggested as a supplementary method for sociometry.

  • The purpose of this study was closely to explore the guidance experiences of senior elementary teachers who have had over 30 years of teaching experiences in elementary school based on interpretive(or hermeneutic) inquiry. The entry research question was 'What are the guidance experiences of senior elementary teachers like?' Seven senior elementary teachers working for O elementary School in G city participated in this study voluntarily. Each participant was interviewed twice in a consecutive manner. 14 periods of interview were completed all together and each period took about 40-60 minutes. In conclusion, this study conceptualized the guidance experiences of the senior elementary teachers(participants) as follows: First, the concepts of guidance held by the participants were conceptualized as 1) supporting and caring activity helping students to lead joyful school life, 2) assisting activity helping students to grow on good basic life habits, 3) character building activity helping students to lead integrative growth. Second, the fields and contents of guidance held by the participants were conceptualized as basic life habits, manners, and health & safety. Interestingly, these concepts were evolved in connection with their personal, practical teaching experiences rather than in-service teacher education. Third, the guidance methods frequently used by the participants were co-work with parents, exemplary storytelling, counselling, and praise. The participants applied these methods differently according to the grade, individual difference, and school curriculum policy to some degree. Fourth, the participants have experienced a lot of struggles with students, teachers, and parents in doing their guidance practices throughout the whole teaching career. Their guidance experiences commonly shifted from more teacher-centered or authoritative to more student-centered or relational way as their teaching years accumulated. Interestingly, all the participants more or less lived as lifelong learners to create their own right space as senior teachers in today's competitive and challenging landscape. This study strongly suggests that responsible teacher education can playa great role of enabling senior teachers to cope with guidance issues successfully. Compared with the speedy social change, the teacher education in Korea had been so authoritative, provider-based, subject-based until recently and it have not met the needs and wants of the elementary teachers in field. This trend has significantly hindered them from catching up with the needs of the speedy social change in terms of contemporary guidance issues. This study is limited in that the data is solely collected based on interview. So, an observational research is strongly suggested in order to uncover the situated understanding of the guidance experiences of elementary senior teachers.

The 'Non-Eo' counseling program developed in this study was 10 lessons of forty minutes each and divided the group counseling procedure into three phases as introduction, progress, and wrap-up. The subjects of this study were 40 elementary school students in upper grades in a specific county: 20 students in the control and experimental group respectively. The 'Non-Eo' counseling program was applied to the experimental group twice a week for five weeks and it was not applied to the control group. Two measurement tools were used in order to verify the effects: the self-esteem measurement test adopted by Gong, Tae-Su(1998) which was originated from the selfesteem measurement test for children developed by Coopersmith(1967) and the friendship measure test adopted by Jo, Seong-rye(2001) which originated from the friendship measure test developed by Furman and Bierman(1983). The results were as follows; Firstly, there was a significant difference between the growth of self-esteem of the students in the experimental group and that in the control group; in general, the p-value of the experimental group was .032. Secondly, there was a significant difference between the growth of friendship of the students in the experimental group and that in the control group; in general, the p-value of the experimental group was .046. The fact that this study carried out a new counselling approach called 'Non-Eo' counseling based on the contents related to 'the growth of the mind' in "Non-eo" is of great significance.

  • This paper addresses the issue of design and application of a Web-based counseling system of which purpose is to facilitate counseling so that students can freely express their personal problems and get professional helps through the system. The prominent features of the counseling system are that the system encourages students to involve actively in interactive process, and it helps them to create genuine interests out of disbelief or uneasiness towards counseling, and it helps them to create positive attitude towards counseling. To do that, counseling process should meet the requirement of confidentiality in order to build trust between counselor and counselee. Many counseling sites operated by various organizations utilize E-mail as a communication channel for confidentiality purpose, which is likely to end up with single occasions in which desirable relationships for counseling can hardly be established. To solve the above-mentioned problem, a closed, confidential, Web-based counseling system was built on a Web server so that trustful relationship can be accomplished through a confidential, Web-based counseling system. Also, the result of applying it to a local elementary school is stated. Thanks to the merits of personalized, confidential counseling system compared to the face-to-face counseling, surpassing the limitation of time and space and overcoming the fearfulness, it was well observed that students showed great interests in participation of conseling.
