  • This survey was performed to investigate avian salmonellosis from broiler farms in Namwon area for 4 years. The whole samples from farms were 541 and chicken samples were 294. Out of 294, 83 cases were identified with avian salmonellosis for 4 years by various serological and biochemical tests. There was no outbreak of pullorum disease, but fowl typhoid occurred in 36 farms. The outbreak of avian salmonellosis occurred continuously regardless of seasons throughout the year. Avian salmonellosis mostly happened within 10 days of age which were 52 cases(63%). The selection of susceptible antibiotics has changed from Quinoline group in 2000 to amoxacillin + clavulanic acid(AmC).

  • Salmonella (S.) Typhimurium is highly contagious, and its infection may rapidly spread within pig populations of herd. According to the survey (1,191 pigs) from 2003 to 2012, 155 pigs (13.0%) were diagnosed as salmonellosis in Jeju. Major porcine salmonellosis cases (88.4%) were concentrated in 4- to 12-week-old weaned pigs, but 6 pigs (3.9%) under 4 weeks old were also diagnosed. Based on the histopathologic examinations, ulcerative enteritis (63.9%) in the large intestine and/or paratyphoid nodules formation (57.4%) in the liver were most prevalent lesions in porcine salmonellosis. Single infection of S. Typhimurium and mixed infection with more than 2 pathogens were detected in 38 (24.5%) and 117 (75.5%) in pigs, respectively. Co-infections of Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus and Porcine circovirus type 2 were very common in porcine salmonellosis in Jeju and detected in 84 (54.2%) and 59 (38.1%) pigs, respectively. Based on the serotyping tests using 41 bacterial isolates, S. Typhimurium and S. Rissen were confirmed in 39 (95.1%) and 2 (4.9%) cases, respectively.

  • Salmonella is one of the most important food-borne zoonotic pathogens, causing acute or chronic digestive diseases such as enteritis. The acute form of enteritis is common in young pigs of 2 - 4 months of age. The main symptoms include high fever ($41-42^{\circ}C$), loss of appetite, and increased mortality within 2 - 4 days of onset of the disease. It is often the cause of increasing mortality, decreasing growth rate and reducing feed efficiency of piglets. In the case of chronic enteritis in pigs, the main symptom is weight loss due to the continuing severe diarrhea. Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium and Salmonella enterica serovar Choleraesuis are typical pig adapted serotypes, which cause one of four major syndromes: enteric fever, enterocolitis/diarrhea, bacteremia and chronic asymptomatic carriage. These syndromes cause a huge economic burden to swine industry by reducing production. Therefore, it is necessary that swine industries should strive to decrease Salmonellosis in pigs in order to reduce economic losses. There are several measures, such as vaccination to prevent salmonellosis, that are implemented differently from country to country. For the treatment of Salmonella, ongoing antibiotic treatment is needed. However constant doses of antibiotics can be a problem because of antibiotic resistance. Therefore, the focus should be made more on prevention than treatment. In this review, we addressed the basic information about Salmonella, route of infection, clinical symptoms, and prevention of Salmonellosis.

  • The present study was undertaken to estimate the antibacterial effect of Mume Fructus water extract (MFWE) against murine salmonellosis. At MFWE concentrations ranging from 25 to 100 ${\mu}g/ml$, the antibacterial effect was not showed on Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium). On the other hand, bacteria without MFWE had a tendency to proliferate up to 8 h after incubation. Oral administration of MFWE at the dose of 40 mg/ml showed a therapeutic effect for S. typhimurium infected BALB/c mice. The mortality of MFWE-treated mice was 80% at 12 days, while that of MFWE-untreated mice was 100% at 9 days after a lethal dose of S. typhimurium infection. The results of our study strongly indicate that MFWE has potential as an effective of salmonellosis.

  • Salmonellosis is one of the most important wasting diseases that leads to economic damage in the swine industry. Many risk factors have been reported to increase the spread of Salmonella infection; therefore, it is important to understand how to treat the risk factors of Salmonella to effectively prevent salmonellosis in commercial pig farms. To accomplish this, we conducted a study to determine if the seasons and porcine production stages affected the serological response to Salmonella in Korea. A total of 1,592 serum samples submitted to the School of Veterinary Medicine of Kangwon National University between Jan. 2001 and Dec. 2004 from commercial farms were tested by ELISA. The overall apparent seroprevalence of salmonellosis was 38.1% (95% CI, 38.0-38.2), while the prevalence of Salmonella according to seasons and production stages ranged from 17.9% to 62.8% for the former (24.6% in spring, 17.9% in summer, 38.5% in autumn, and 62.8% in winter) and from 16.1% to 68.3% for the latter (17.9% in suckling pigs, 16.1% in weaning pigs, 37.50% in growers, 41.9% in finishers, 48.0% in gilts, and 68.3% in sows). In this study of seroprevalence by production stage, most pigs were naturally infected by Salmonella during the weaning stage. Also, seroprevalences were found to have a seasonal pattern in which most pigs were infected in autumn to winter.

  • Objectives : An outbreak of salmonellosis occurred among the student s and staff of D primary school in Yeongcheon-si, 2004. This investigation was carried out to prevent any recurrence of this outbreak and to study the infection source and transmission of the salmonellosis. Methods : The authors conducted a questionnaire survey among 1,205 students and staff members from D primary school about the ingestion of the school lunch and drinking water, and the manifestation of their symptoms. The author examined rectal swabs, the tap water and microorganism cultures, and we also investigated the dining facility and water supply facility. Results : The diarrheal cases were defined as the confirmed cases or the persons who had diarrhea more than one time with symptoms such as fever, vomiting and tenesmus. The diarrheal attack rate was 28.0%. Ingestion of fried bean curd with egg had a significantly high association with the diarrheal attack rate (p<0.05), and the relative risk of the fried bean curd with egg was 10.68 (95% CI=3.88-29.41), as was determined by logistic regression analysis. The bacterial counts in the tap water of the food preparation room and toilet (first floor) exceeded the maximum permissible counts. S. Enteritidis bacteria were only cultured from the fried bean curd with egg of all the supplied foods on September 3, 2004. Conclusions : The major cause of salmonellosis was presumed to be the contaminated bean curd via contaminated tap water due to a water leak of a school water pipe. This contaminated bean curd was under prepared, which allowed the S. Enteritidis to survive and multiply prior to its ingestion.

  • Salmonellosis caused by a number of serotypes of Salmonella is an infectious, acute or chronic, zoonotic disease and characterized by enteritis and diarrhea, septicemia in animal. In these studies we investigated the prevalent serotypes of Salmonella causing animal salmonellosis in Korea and the 71 strains of Salmonella spp. were isolated from materials such as mesenteric lymph nodes, fecal samples from slaughtered animal. With the identification test results, the most prevalent serotypes were, in order, S stanley 31 strains (43.7%), S typhimurium 19 strains (26.8%) and S montevideo 11 strains (15.5%), respectively. And we could establish the method for detection of antibodies to broad variety of Salmonella serotypes. Lipopolysaccharide(LPS) antigen extracted from Salmonella was more sensitive and specific than outer membrane protein antigen from that for detection of Salmonella antibody by using an indirect ELISA. The optimal concentration of antigen was 100ng/ml of LPS, the dilutions of conjugate and serum were 1 : 1,000~2,000 and 1 : 200~400, respectively. The mix LPS-ELISA which was used by mixing LPS from S typhimurium (group B), S choleraesuis (group C) and S enteritidis (group D) were more rapid and effective than that used LPS from individual strain for detection of Salmonella serogroup O4, O7 and O9 antibody at the same time. We could obtain the high values of optical density ($0.73{\pm}0.32$) by mix LPS-ELISA on the farm which had occurred salmonellosis, but very low values of $0.17{\pm}0.06$ on the negative farm of salmonellosis. So, the mix LPS-ELISA may be used to monitor the serological surveillance for the presence of infection with a number of serotypes of Salmonella and would be useful for prevention and control of salmonellosis in animal.
