This research proposes a method for designing VSI (Variable Sampling Interval) control charts with supplementary run rules. The basic idea is to apply various run rules and the VSI scheme to a control chart in order to increase the sensitivity. The sampling process of the VSI run rules chart is constructed by Markov chain approach. A procedure for designing the VSI run rules chart is proposed based on Lorenzen and Vance's model. Sensitivity study shows that the VSI run rules charts outperform the FSI (Fixed Sampling Interval) run rules charts for wide range of process mean shifts. A major advantage of the VSI run rules chart over other charts such as CUSUM, EWMA, and adaptive charts is it's simplicity in implementation. Some useful guidelines are proposed based on the sensitivity study.
The bounded adjustment is known to be more efficient than repeated adjustment when the cost is incurred for engineering process control. The procedure of the bounded adjustment is to adjust the process when the one-step predicted deviation exceeds the adjustment limit by the amount of the prediction. In this paper, two run rules are proposed and studied In order to improve the efficiency of the traditional bounded adjustment procedure. The efficiency is studied in terms of the standardized cost through Monte Carlo simulation when the procedure is operated with and without the run rules. The adjustment procedure operated with run rules turns out to be more robust for changes in the process and cost parameters.

This research proposes a design method based on the statistical characteristics of the Shewhart control chart incorporated with 2 of 2 and 2 of 3 runs rules respectively. A Markov chain approach is employed in order to calculate the in-control and out-of-control average run lengths(ARL). Two different control limit coefficients for the Shewhart scheme and the runs rule scheme are derived simultaneously to minimize the out-of-control average run length subject to the reasonable in-control average run length. Numerical examples show that the statistical performance of the hybrid control scheme are superior to that of the original Shewhart control chart.
In this paper, a method for the design of robust adaptive controller using the heuristic rules of industrial engineers is presented. This scheme works on the basis of heuristic rules and includes a supervisor, a system identifier and a detuner. The supervisor detects onsetting instability based on the analysis of the amplitude and the trend of error signal, also selects running controllers. Upon detecting instability, the controller is switched to a PID algorithm and run recursively until stability is restored. Simultaneously, new input / output data is gathered and the system identifier runs to get critical sensitivity (kc) and critical period(tc). Based on the new values(kc, tc), a GPC controller is redesigned and normal GPC is finally run. The algorithm described in this paper belongs to the supervised adaptive control category with a limited use of heuristic rules. Finally, we show the robust of this scheme by simulated example.
In this paper we present compiler-based active rule system to efficiently maintain spatial integrity constraints in a heterogeneous, distributed environment. Specially, the prototype active rule system presented has been developed as a component of a whole middleware system called SDBC(Spatile DataBase Connectivity). Due to this reason, our active rule system is provided for heterogeneous ODBMSs in a distributed environment and used to define spatial integrity constraints using the active rules in E-C-A(Event-Condition-Action) type. Using this active rule system, an application programmer can free himself from a heavier burden on the integrity maintenance of application objects. In the compiler-based approach, active rules applicable to events raised by a database program are directly inserted into the program in a function type by the preprocessor, and then they are compiled with the application program source codes. One advantage of this approach is that there is no run-time overhead accompanied by monitoring all the database transitions when preprocessed program is executed. This active rule system also provides facilities to manage changed rules and dynamically interpret those rules at run-tuime.
A fuzzy learning algorithm to get the optimal fuzzy rules is presented in this paper. The algorithm introduces a reference model to generate a desired output and a performance index funtion instead of the performance index table. The performance index funtion is a cost function based on the error and error-rate between the reference and plant output. The cost function is minimized by a gradient method and the control input is also updated. In this case, the control rules which generate the desired response can be obtained by changing the portion of the error-rate in the cost funtion. In SISO(Single-Input Single- Output)plant, only by the learning delay, it is possible to experss the plant model and to get the desired control rules. In the long run, this algorithm gives us the good control rules with a minimal amount of prior informaiton about the environment.
After a work of Derman and Ross(1997) that considered simple main runs rules and derived ARL (Average Run Length) using Markov chain modeling, $\bar{X}$ control chart based on diverse alternative main and supplementary runs rules that is the most popular control chart for monitoring the mean of a process are proposed. This paper reviews and discusses the-state-of-art researches for these runs rules and classifies according to several properties of runs rules. ARL derivation for a proposed runs rule is also illustrated.
This paper's purpose is to improve determining of the critical response of curved bridge to multi-component seismic motion. There are several methods to combine responses by multi-component excitation response, 30%, 40% rules and square-root-of-sum (SRSS). These combination rules determine same value of critical response in straight bridges. However, each method has critical response value of different magnitude in curved bridges. Thus a study about critical response of curved bridges is required. This paper presents comparison critical responses value as each combination rule, 30%, 40% rules and SRSS on curved bridges with the different radiuses of curvature. This study was carried out by response spectrum analysis of OO IC steel box girder bridge using SAP2000. It is concluded as follows: 1) In curved bridges, 30% and 40% rules tend to underestimate the critical response relatively to SRSS. 2) When bridges have smaller radiuses than 100m, difference between SRSS and 30% or 40% rules let run errors up as radiuses of curvature decreased.
Purpose: This paper introduces new 2-of-3 main and supplementary runs rules to increase the performance of the classical $\bar{X}$ control chart for detecting small process shifts. Methods: The proposed runs rules are compared with other competitive runs rules by numerical experiments. Nonlinear optimization problem to minimize the out-of-control ARL at a specified shift of process mean for determining action and warning limits at a time is formulated and a procedure to find two limits is illustrated with a numerical example. Results: The proposed 2-of-3 main and supplementary runs rules demonstrate an improved performance over other runs rules in detecting a sudden shift of process mean by simultaneous changes of mean and standard deviation. Conclusion: To increase the performance in the detection of small to moderate shifts, the proposed runs rules will be used with $\bar{X}$ control charts.
