  • $Na^+$-beta-alumina solid electrolyte was synthesized by solid state reaction using $Li_2O$ and MgO as a phase stabilizer, and the effect of stabilizers on the phase formation and sintering density was investigated. In order to determine the phase fraction according to the synthesizing temperature, the molar ratio of [$Na_2O$] : [$Al_2O_3$] was fixed at 1 : 5, and calcination was conducted at temperatures between $1200{\sim}1500^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. In the $Li_2O$-$Na_2O$-$Al_2O_3$ ternary system, ${\beta}^{{\prime}{\prime}}$-alumina phase fraction considerably increased by the secondary phase transition at $1500^{\circ}C$, whereas it maintained similarly in the MgO-$Na_2O$-$Al_2O_3$ system. Additionally, the disc-type specimens of $Na^+$-beta-alumina were sintered at the temperature between $1550{\sim}1650^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, and relative sintering densities, phase changes, and microstructures were analyzed. In case of $Li_2O$-stabilized $Na^+$-beta-alumina, ${\beta}^{{\prime}{\prime}}$-phase fraction and relative density of specimen sintered at $1600^{\circ}C$ were 94.7% and 98%, respectively. Relative density of MgO-stabilized $Na^+$-beta-alumina increased with a rise in sintering temperature.

  • Magnetic properties of $Nd_{x}{(Fe_{0.9}Co_{0.1})}_{90-x}B_{6}Nb_{3}Cu_{1}(x=\;3,\;4,\;5)$ rrelt-spun alloys with 6 at% B content were studied aiming for finding out a new $\alpha$-Fe based Nd-Fe-B nanocrystalline alloy with good hard magnetic properties. $Nd_{x}{(Fe_{0.9}Co_{0.1})}_{90-x}B_{6}Nb_{3}Cu_{1}$ melt-spun alloys prepared by RSP crystallized to nanocrystalline phase. An optimally annealed $Nd_{3}{(Fe_{0.9}Co_{0.1})}_{87}B_{6}Nb_{3}Cu_{1}$ melt-spun alloys had larger volume ratio of $\alpha$-Fe(Co) than that of higher Nd content alloy and showed high remanence of about 1.6 T. On the contrary, the increase of Nd content in $Nd_{x}{(Fe_{0.9}Co_{0.1})}_{90-x}B_{6}Nb_{3}Cu_{1}$ alloys gave rise to gradual increase of an amount of $Nd_{2}{(Fe,\;Co)}_{14}B$ phase and improved coercivity. An optimally annealed $Nd_{5}{(Fe_{0.9}Co_{0.1})}_{85}B_{6}Nb_{3}Cu_{1}$ alloy showed the most improved hard mag¬netic properties. The remanence, coercivityand energy product of the alloy were 1.35 T, 219 kA/m (2.75 kOe), and $129\;kJ/m^{3}$ (16.2 MGOe), respectively.

  • Developments in the understanding of fire behaviour for large open-plan spaces typical of tall buildings have been greatly outpaced by the rate at which these buildings are being constructed and their characteristics changed. Numerous high-profile fire-induced failures have highlighted the inadequacy of existing tools and standards for fire engineering when applied to highly-optimised modern tall buildings. With the continued increase in height and complexity of tall buildings, the risk to the occupants from fire-induced structural collapse increases, thus understanding the performance of complex structural systems under fire exposure is imperative. Therefore, an accurate representation of the design fire for open-plan compartments is required for the purposes of design. This will allow for knowledge-driven, quantifiable factors of safety to be used in the design of highly optimised modern tall buildings. In this paper, we review the state-of-the-art experimental research on large open-plan compartment fires from the past three decades. We have assimilated results collected from 37 large-scale compartment fire experiments of the open-plan type conducted from 1993 to 2019, covering a range of compartment and fuel characteristics. Spatial and temporal distributions of the heat fluxes imposed on compartment ceilings are estimated from the data. The complexity of the compartment fire dynamics is highlighted by the large differences in the data collected, which currently complicates the development of engineering tools based on physical models. Despite the large variability, this analysis shows that the orders of magnitude of the thermal exposure are defined by the ratio of flame spread and burnout front velocities (VS / VBO), which enables the grouping of open-plan compartment fires into three distinct modes of fire spread. Each mode is found to exhibit a characteristic order of magnitude and temporal distribution of thermal exposure. The results show that the magnitude of the thermal exposure for each mode are not consistent with existing performance-based design models, nevertheless, our analysis offers a new pathway for defining thermal exposure from realistic fire scenarios in large open-plan compartments.

  • Phase change material(PCM) has the capacity to absorb or release energy in heat when the phase changes. This study conducted to investigate the effect of strontium-based PCM on the hydration heat and mechanical properties of mortar with fly ash and blast furnace slag. The amounts of PCM were 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5% by the cementitious materials weight. The tests about mortar flow, semi-adiabatic temperature rise, compressive and flexural strength tests were carried out for twelve types of mortar mixtures. The test results indicated that the use of PCM was effective to reduce hydration heat and retard hydration of mortar with industrial by-products. In particular, the heat generation rate of mortars with fly ash was lower than that of mortars with blast furnace slag. The compressive strength of mortar with fly ash and blast furnace slag were decreased with increasing PCM ratio.

  • Mixing characteristics and backdraft dynamics were investigated using large eddy simulation for compartments initially filled with methane fuel. Four different opening geometries, i.e. conventional door opening case (Door) and the cases where horizontal door was implemented on the upper ($Slot_U$), middle ($Slot_M$) and lower part ($Slot_L$) of side wall, were considered in the simulations. For cases without ignition, the amounts of inflow oxygen and outflow fuel from the compartment opening were, from largest to smallest, Door > $Slot_U$ ~ $Slot_M$ > $Slot_L$. However, the fuel and oxygen were the best mixed for the $Slot_U$ case while the fuel and oxygen were not well mixed and in relatively separated two layers for the $Slot_L$ case. The global equivalence ratio defined by the amounts of fuel and oxygen in the compartment was not correlated reasonably with the peak pressure of backdraft. The peak pressure during backdraft was the highest for the $Slot_U$ case, a well mixed condition of fuel and air, and backdraft was not found for the $Slot_L$ where the pressure rise was not so high due to the mixing status. The peak pressures for the Door and $Slot_M$ cases were in between Door and $Slot_L$ cases. The peak pressure during backdraft was well correlated with the total amount of heat release until the instance of backdraft occurrence.

  • Background: Lung cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and the incidence continues to rise. Although many prognostic factors have been identified, the clinical characteristics and outcomes in Korean lung cancer patients are not well defined. Methods: Of the 23,254 new lung cancer cases registered at the Korea Central Cancer Registry in 2013, total 489 patients from 19 hospitals were abstracted by the Korean Central Cancer Registry. The clinical data retrospectively analyzed, patients were followed up until December 2015. Results: The median age was 69 years (interquartile range, 60-74 years); 65.4% were male and 62.1% were ever-smokers. Cough was the most common initial symptom (33.5%); 13.1% of patients were asymptomatic. While squamous cell carcinoma was the most common subtype in male patients (37.2%), adenocarcinoma was the most frequent histological type in all patients (48.7%) and females (76.3%). The majority of patients received treatment (76.5%), which included surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Older age (hazard ratio [HR], 1.037), lower body mass index (HR, 0.904), ever-smoker (HR, 2.003), small cell lung cancer (HR, 1.627), and distant metastasis (HR, 3.990) were independent predictors of mortality. Patients without symptoms (HR, 0.387) and without treatment (HR, 0.364) were associated with a favorable outcome in multivariate Cox analysis. Conclusion: Lung cancer in Korea occurs predominantly in elderly patients, with adenocarcinoma being the most frequent subtype. The prognosis was poorer in ever-smokers and older, malnourished, and untreated patients with advanced lung cancer.

  • In this study, it was analyzed the cases of bored PHC piles designed for the building foundations. The overall length of the piles varies within a maximum of 35 m. However, the average length was 17.0 to 18.9 m depending on the kind of the bedrock, with no significant difference. The socket length entered into the bedrock was designed with approximately 58% of the whole piles being 1m, the minimum length of the specification, and up to 5m. Although the range in design efficiency was very large, on average it was about 70%, consistent with the usual known extent. Applications with low design efficiency were mainly shown on the foundation of low-rise buildings or rides with low design load. On the weathered rock, the design load, which governs the design result was widely distributed at 65 to 97% of allowable bearing capacity of ground. The ratio of allowable axial load of piles to allowable bearing capacity of ground is also widely distributed between 36 and 115%, so optimization efforts are required along with design efficiency. On the other hand, the allowable bearing capacity on the soft or hard rock was highly equal, mostly within 90% of the allowable axial load of piles. In the design, the end bearing resistance averaged over 75% of the allowable bearing capacity. However, the results of the dynamic pile load test show that the end bearing resistance was predominant under the E.O.I.D conditions, and in some cases, the end bearing resistance was at least 25% under the restrike conditions.

  • Low-temperature combustion (LTC) strategies, such as HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition), PCCI (Premixed Charge Compression Ignition), and RCCI (Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition), have been developed to effectively reduce NOx and PM while increasing the thermal efficiency of diesel engines. Through numerical analysis, this study examined the effects of the injection timing and two-stage injection ratio of diesel fuel, a highly reactive fuel, on the performance and exhaust gas of RCCI engines using gasoline as the low reactive fuel and diesel as the highly reactive fuel. In the case of two-stage injection, combustion slows down if the first injection timing is too advanced. The combustion temperature decreases, resulting in lower combustion performance and an increase in HC and CO. The injection timing of approximately -60°ATDC is considered the optimal injection timing considering the combustion performance, exhaust gas, and maximum pressure rise rate. When the second injection timing was changed during the two-stage injection, considering the combustion performance, exhaust gas, and the maximum pressure increase rate, it was judged to be optimal around -30°ATDC. In the case of two-stage injection, the optimal result was obtained when the first injection amount was set to approximately 60%. Finally, a two-stage injection rather than a single injection was considered more effective on the combustion performance and exhaust gas.

  • The high capacity bi-directional pile load test is an optimum pile load test method for high-rised buildings. Especially, a high pressure and double-acting bi-directional pile load testing, a special type of the high capacity bi-directional pile load test, is the most practical way to overcome limitations of loading capacities and constraints of field conditions, which was judged to be a very useful test method for requiring high loading capacities. Total of 2 high capacity bi-directional pile load tests(P-1 and P-2) were conducted in high-rised building sites in Korea. Based on the field load test results, the sufficiency ratio of loading capacities to design loads for P-1 and P-2 were 3.3 and 2.1, respectively. For P-2, the load test could not verify the design load if 1-directional loads applied slightly smaller than the actual applied load. Also, high capacity bi-directional pile load tests were difficult to determine an ultimate state of ground or piles, although the loads were applied until their maximum loads. Hence, finite element analyses were conducted to determine their ultimate states by calibrating and extrapolate with test results.
