  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the impact of workplace bullying experience and resilience on the organizational socialization among new graduate nurses. Methods: This is a descriptive correlational study with 148 new graduate nurses working in the hospitals in B city of Korea. The instruments that were used for measuring main variables were the negative acts questionnaire-revised (NAQ-R), the Korean version of the Connor-Davidson resilience scale (CD-RISC), and the measurement tool for new nurses' organizational socialization. Results: The prevalence of workplace bullying was 22.3%, and the subjects reported moderate level of resilience. Significant negative correlations between workplace bullying and resilience, and organizational socialization were found. A significant positive correlation was found between resilience and organizational socialization. As a result of multiple regression analysis, resilience, workplace bullying, and a working in desired unit turned out to be variables that explained new graduate nurses' organizational socialization (adjusted $R^2=.514$, p<.001). Conclusion: The results of this study suggested that new graduate nurses with higher resilience and less experience of workplace bullying would show higher organizational socialization. Further research is needed to identify the regulation effect of resilience in between workplace bullying and organizational socialization.

  • This study focused on the relationship between ego- resilience and stress coping styles of male and female adolescents. The study also tried to identify differences in stress coping styles based on sexual differences and the level of ego- resilience in adolescents. Ego-resilience showed a positive correlation to problem-focused and social support seeking coping styles and a negative correlation to emotion-focused coping style for both male and female adolescents. Canonical Correlation analysis revealed that self-confidence among four sub-domains of ego-resilience made the most outstanding contributions in predicting stress coping styles of female adolescents. The self-confident female adolescents tended to use the problem-focused coping style. For male adolescents, the optimistic attitude among four sub-domains of ego-resilience was the most significant factor in predicting emotion-focused coping style. Female adolescents tended to use more varied coping strategies than male adolescents in stressful situations. The group of adolescents who had a higher level of ego-resilience reported more problem-focused and social support- seeking coping styles in stressful situations. Conversely the group of adolescents with lower level of ego-resilience tended to use emotion-focused coping strategy. The results of this study have important implications for theory, research, and practice. Development of ego-resilience in adolescents based on sexual differences was an important task for their effective coping strategies.

  • Purpose: The main objectives of this study were to examine relationship between depression and resilience in children with IDDM and identify factors associated with depression. Method: Data were collected from 63 children whose ages ranged from 10 to 15 years and who had been diagnosed with IDDM for over six months. Resilience was measured with an instrument developed by Kim (2002) and depression with the CDI by Beck (1967). Descriptive analysis, Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression analyses were used to analyze the data. Results: The mean score for depression was 11.71 (range: 0-54) and resilience was 99.03 (range: 32-128). There was a significant positive relationship between depression and academic performance (r=0.598, p>.01), and negative relationships between depression and perceived parenting attitude (r=-0.579, p>.01) and resilience (r=-0.577, p>.01). The result of multiple regression analysis showed that academic performance (${\beta}=-0.419$, p>.01), perceived parenting attitude (${\beta}=-0.338$, p>.01) and resilience (${\beta}=-0.219$, p>.05) were statistically significant for depression. Conclusions: The children with IDDM who reported lower resilience, negative parenting attitude, and better academic performance were more depressed. It is important for nurses to identify the strengths of the children with chronic illnesses and to help them increase their resilience level to prevent depression. Parenting classes are necessary to help parents support resilience of their children and counseling programs for mothers of these children are also recommended.

  • This study investigated the effects of acculturative stress and resilience on the depression of university students from North Korea, and examined the moderating effect of resilience on the relation between acculturative stress and depression. The participants of this study were 116 university students from North Korea (53 males and 63 females) aged between 20 and 35 years. The participants were asked to respond either to a written questionnaire or to an online survey system designed to measure research variables. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and a hierarchical regression. The moderating effect of resilience was examined by means of a hierarchical regression. The major findings were as follows: first, an increase in the level of acculturative stress increased that of depression, whereas an increase in the level of resilience decreased that of depression. Second, the moderating effect of resilience on the relation between acculturative stress and depression was statistically significant. That is, the negative influence of acculturative stress on depression was greater when the level of resilience was low, compared to when it was high. In summary, both acculturative stress and resilience had significant effects on the depression of university students from North Korea. Moreover, resilience buffered the detrimental effect of acculturative stress on their depression.

  • This study explored resilience and protective factors in children at-risk. Teachers of 755 children in child care centers replied to questionnaires regarding resiliency and behavior problems; children's mothers replied to questionnaires about risk factors, own parenting, and family hardiness. The data of 216 vulnerable children and 355 children in a comparative group who had not been exposed to any risk factors were analyzed. Findings showed that resilience was differentiated by gender and age; that is, resilience in the vulnerable group covaried as a function of gender and age. The resilience level of the vulnerable group was lower than the comparative group. Children with fewer behavior problems had a higher level of resilience, and resilience was higher for vulnerable children with higher levels of protective factors.
