  • This paper proposes the nearfield eigenvector method for array shape estimation using reference signals basted on the nearfield signal modeling. Generally. direction finding methods assume the reference signals to be plainwave. However, in case of the reference signals in nearfield, this assumption is inadequate for array shape estimation. In this paper. the nearfield reference signals are modeled. and we propose the nearfield eigenvector method. The numerical experiments indicated that the proposed method shows good performance for array shape estimation regardless of the ranges of the reference signals.

  • In beamforming method, source positions are predicted by MUSIC (Multiple Signal Classification) power method and composite sound fields can then be decomposed into each partial field by beamforming, detenninistically without restriction of the distance between reference microphones and sources. However, reference microphone array shape is important in both MUSIC and beamforming method. Thus the present paper describes the effect of the reference microphone array shape.

  • We develop the testing procedures about the homogeneity of the shape parameters of several inverse Gaussian distributions in our paper. We propose default Bayesian testing procedures for the shape parameters under the reference priors. The Bayes factor based on the proper priors gives the successful results for Bayesian hypothesis testing. For the case of the lack of information, the noninformative priors such as Jereys' prior or the reference prior can be used. Jereys' prior or the reference prior involves the undefined constants in the computation of the Bayes factors. Therefore under the reference priors, we develop the Bayesian testing procedures with the intrinsic Bayes factors and the fractional Bayes factor. Simulation study for the performance of the developed testing procedures is given, and an example for illustration is given.

  • Most of the way shape estimation method using reference sources assume that the reference sources are in the farfield. That is, the reference sources are assumed to be far from the array. However, in applications of the array with reference sources, the reference sources are not far from the way, so that in practical ocean environments, the conventional method using farfield source model fail to estimate the positions of the hydrophones. In this paper, based on the nearfield source model, a subspace-based array shape estimation method was proposed. In the proposed method, nearfield reference source is modeled using the differential time delay at each hydrophone, and nearfield parameters are derived. Using these parameters, a subspace-based array shape estimation method that generalizes the existing farfield subspace fitting method which can work regardless of the range of the source is proposed. The Cramer-Rao lower bound for the proposed method is investigated. The results of the numerical experiments indicate that the proposed method performs well in estimating the shape of a perturbed way regardless of the ranges of the reference sources.

  • In this paper, we develop the reference priors for the scale and shape parameters in the nonregular Pareto distribution. We derive the reference priors as noninformative priors and prove the propriety of joint posterior distribution under the general priors including reference priors in the order of inferential importance. Through the simulation study, we compare the reference priors with respect to coverage probabilities of parameter of interest in a frequentist sense.

  • Recently, Li, Brenner, Cornelissen and Kim (2002) reported that 2D shape perception during pursuit eye movement just reflected the retinal image, and this result implies that the visual system ignored the extra-retinal information. In reality, however, we usually do not experience the perceptual distottion of 2D shape during pursuit eye movement. One Possibility is that the visual system night exploit the fact that the relative location between objects on retinal image is constantly maintained even during pursuit eye movement. The present research examined this possibility. Interestingly, perceptual distortion of 2D shape was observed even in the presence of reference, however, the amount of distortion decreased compared to when the reference does not exist. The distance between the reference and the target affected the perceptual distortion. These results imply that reference information is used in 2D shape perception during pursuit eye movement but it cannot completely explain the stable and accurate representation of 2D shape perception during pursuit eye movement.

  • In this paper, we develop the noninformative priors for the common shape parameter in the gamma distributions. We develop the matching priors and reveal that the second order matching prior does not exist. It turns out that the one-at-a-time reference prior and the two group reference prior satisfy a first order probability matching criterion. Some simulation study is peformed.

  • In this paper, we develop the noninformative priors for the common shape parameter of several inverse Gaussian distributions. Specially, we want to develop noninformative priors which satisfy certain objective criterion. The probability matching priors and reference priors of the common shape parameter will be developed. It turns out that the second order matching prior does not exist. The reference priors satisfy the first order matching criterion, but Jeffrey's prior is not the first order matching prior. We showed that the proposed reference prior matches the target coverage probabilities in a frequentist sense through simulation study, and an example based on real data is given.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient two-step pattern matching method which promises shape distortion-tolerant recognition of handwritten of handwritten Hangul syllables. In the first step, nonlinear shape normalization is carried out to compensate for global shape distortions in handwritten characters, then a preliminary classification based on simple pattern matching is performed. In the next step, nonlinear pattern matching which achieves best matching between input and reference pattern is carried out to compensate for local shape distortions, then detailed classification which determines the final result of classification is performed. As the performance of recognition systems based on pattern matching methods is greatly effected by the quality of reference patterns. we construct reference patterns by combining the proposed nonlinear pattern matching method with a well-known averaging techniques. Experimental results reveal that recognition performance is greatly improved by the proposed two-step pattern matching method and the reference pattern construction scheme.

  • In order to reduce the lead-time and cost, the technology of rapid prototyping (RP) has been widely used. A new rapid prototyping process, transfer-type variable lamination manufacturing process by using expandable polystyrene foam (VLM-ST), has been developed to reduce building time, apparatus cost and additional post-processing. At the same time, VLM Slicer, the CAD/CAM software for VLM-ST has been developed. In this study, algorithms for accuracy improvement of VLM-ST, which include offset and overrun of a cutting path and generation of a reference shape are developed. Offset algorithm improves cutting accuracy, overrun algorithm enables the VLM-ST process to make a shape of sharp edge and reference shape generation algorithm adds additional shape which makes off-line lamination easier. In addition, proposed algorithms are applied to practical CAD models for verification.
