  • It is known that adaptive minimum mean square error (MMSE) receivers exhibit better performance than coventional single-user code division multiple access (CDMA) receivers in fixed (or static) channels and have the simple structure compared to other multi-user CDMA receivers. In practice, the radio channels are fading channels where the amplitude and phase of the received signal are time-varying and the sufficient signal-to-noise ratio is not always guaranteed. Thus, the performance of adaptive MMSE receivers is severely degraded in fading environments. We propose a new structure and adaptation algorithm for an adaptive MMSE receivers. Based on computer simulation results, it is observed that the proposed receiver demonstrates substantial performance improvement over currently available adaptive MMSE receivers in fading environments.

  • Although FHSS has many advantages over conventional digital radio communication system, field application has been so far hampered due to its complicated synchronization. In this paper, a new FHSS system is proposed which one FH signal modulated with GMSK and one chip delayed FH signal than former are sent from transmitter, and this is recovered by matching process at a heterodyne correlator in receiver; thus eliminates synchronization as a whole. Through analysis and experiment, we assure that there is possibility in this. The exper- imental result from 915~929 MHz bandwidth with 31 chips is investigated in the environment of AWGN.

  • We measured lagrangian currents in the coastal regions off east coast of Korea. The experiment sites are the Ulijin region where Polar Front of the East Sea is formed and the Ulgi region where coastal upwelling occurs frequently in summer. Each drifters are equipped with GPS receiver, and their trajectories are montiored by receiving the data transmitted from drifters through radio signal. The experiment with 'transmitting' GPS is very useful in monitering flows in coastal regions. Trajectories of drifters in the Uljin Polar Front region in October 1994 showed counterclockwise flow pattern. The flow pattern agrees with the SST distributions obtained from NOAA-11 AVHRR image for the same period. The lagrangian trajectories of drifters at 5m and 15m depths in the Ulgi region for normal period of April 1995 showed that the currents at the top 15m layer are almost uniform and their magnitude is 29cm/s. However, the currents, measured by KORDI, during the upwelling period of June 1994 showed that the currents at 5m depth were 1.2 times stronger than those at 15m depth. The current pattern in the Ulgi upwelling region agrees with the horizontal and vertical distributions of seawater temperature measured by NFRDA at the same period.

  • All accurate and efficient antenna feed model is very important for computing GPR response using the FDTD method In literature, there are several feed models such as the equivalent network in angular-frequency domain, 1-D transmission-line cell, voltage boundary condition in time domain, etc. In this paper, theoretical relationship among the models is investigated. It is found that the above three models become equivalent when a short and lossless feed line can match with its connected transmitter receiver). In view of accuracy and efficiency of the simulation, the FDTD results according to the feed models arc compared with the measured data of the receiving responses for an actual GPR system.

  • A triple-band transceiver module for 2.3/2.5/3.5 GHz mobile WiMAX, IEEE 802.16e, applications is introduced. The suggested transceiver module consists of RFIC, reconfigurable/multi-resonance MIMO antenna, embedded PCB, mobile WiMAX base band, memory and channel selection front-end module. The RFIC is fabricated in $0.13{\mu}m$ RF CMOS process and has 3.5 dB noise figure(NF) of receiver and 1 dBm maximum power of transmitter with 68-pin QFN package, $8{\times}8\;mm^2$ area. The area reduction of transceiver module is achieved by using embedded PCB which decreases area by 9% of the area of transceiver module with normal PCB. The developed triple-band mobile WiMAX transceiver module is tested by performing radio conformance test(RCT) and measuring carrier to interference plus noise ratio (CINR) and received signal strength indication (RSSI) in each 2.3/2.5/3.5 GHz frequency.

  • This paper investigates the design and performance of a digital on-channel repeater (DOCR) for use in Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) digital television (DTV) broadcasting. The main drawback of a DOCR is the echo interference caused by coupling between transmitter and receiver antennas, which induces system instability and performance degradation. In order to overcome this problem, an echo canceller based on the adaptive echo channel estimation (ECE) technique has been researched and applied for a DOCR. However, in the case of ATSC, the pilot signal, which is used for carrier synchronization, may cause a DC offset error and reduce the isolation performance of the echo canceller for a DOCR in an ATSC network. Moreover, since the multipath fading effect of a radio channel usually occurs in a real environment, it should be minimized to improve the overall performance of a DOCR. Therefore, due to the limited isolation performance of echo canceller and the multipath fading effect, an interference cancellation system (ICS) is proposed for a DOCR in an ATSC network. The performance of the proposed DOCR with an ICS is evaluated by software simulation and hardware test results.

  • Implanted telemetry systems provide the ability to monitor different species of animals while they move within their cages. Species monitored include mice, rats, rabbits, dogs, pigs, primates, sheep, horses, cattle, and others. A miniature transmitter implanted in each animal measures one or more parameters. Parameters measured include arterial pressure, intra-pleural pressure, left ventricular pressure, intra-ocular pressure, bladder pressure, ECG, EMG, EEG, EOG, temperature, activity, and other parameters and transmits the data via radio frequency signals to a nearby receiver. Every conventional dedicated transmitter contains one or more sensors, cpu and battery. Due to the expected life of the battery, the measuring time is limited. To overcome these problems, electromagnetic inductive coupling based wireless power transmission technology using multiple transmit coils were proposed, with each coil having a different active area driven by the coil driver. In this research, a parallel resonance based coil driver and serial resonance based coil driver are proposed. From the experiments we see that the parallel coil driver shows better performance under a low impedance and multiple coils configuration. However, the serial coil driver is more efficient for high impedance transmit coils.

  • In this paper, a WCDMA experimental base station is constructed for power management of mobile communication base station and effective isotropic radiated power is determined by using received power of pilot channel measured on the line-of sight. The measurement system was constructed by a experimental base station and a measurement receiver and the common pilot channel (CPICH) power of the base station was measured. Effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP) of the base station obtained by the measurement value considering correction factor for the errors represented the difference of 0.5 dB compared to the established EIRP of the base station.

  • In this study, we fabricated the advanced telemetry system that transmitting media use radio frequency(RF) for the middle range measurement of the physiological signals and receiving media use optical for electromagnetic interference problem. The telemetry system within a size of 65$\times$125$\times$45mm consists of three parts: RF transmitter, optical receiver and physiological signal processing CMOS one chip. Advantages of proposed telemetry system is wireless middle range(50m) FM transmission, reduce electromagnetic interference to a minimum which enables a comfortable bed-side telemetry system. The monitoring system was designed in the structure of dual-processor for the real time processing. The use of the one channel in our study made it possible the real time wavelet transformation of electrocardiogram data of 360Hz, 16 bits for every 1.42 seconds.

  • A microwave Navigational Aid system is suggested suitable for fishing boats too small to be equipped with Radar or Radio-Direction-Finder. The system proposed here is similar to that of Talking-Beacon developed in Japan, but the distinctive modification proposed is that an increase of sixteen times in peak transmitting power, thus an accompanying increase of coverage, is achieved with the same mean transmitting power as that of Japan without sacrificing the clearness of azimuth information, by adopting a pulse repetition modulation instead of pulse width modulation as in Japan system. An experimental land station transmitter of transmitting frequency of 9, 370MHz and of peak power of 35kw with a microwave beam of 1 degree in horizontal width and 7 degrees in vertical width rotating once every three minutes, and also an experimental receiver of 20-dB in sensitivity and of an assumed cost of 100 dollars, operated by a 12 volts battery source are made, and the sail test results are reported showing that a bearing infromation of an accuracy of within two degrees can be obtainable every three minutes at a distance of as far as 24 miles from the transmitter if the transmitter is located as high as 100 meters above sea-level.
