  • Real-scale experimental study was performed to characterize the surface flame propagating velocity along the OF cable in the underground utility fire. Temperatures of oil filled OF cable and dried OF cable with the diameter of 90mn were measured using thermocouple and data log system. The hexane and alkyl-benzene oil were used as a fire source using the ignition device. As a result while the surface flame propagating velocity of the three cables was $0.06\~0.09cm/s$, the surface flame propagating velocity of the one cable was $0.028\~0.032cm/s$. Therefore, it was found that the surface propagating flame velocity of the three OF cables is $2.1\~2.8times$ faster than that of one OF cable case. The results show that the surface propagating flame velocity became larger as increase of the number of cable, the volume of alkyl-benzene oil in the cable. The characteristics of surface propagating flame velocity in the OF cable can be helpful to fire suppression system in utility.

  • It has been reported that the dynamic stress intensity factor for a propagating crack is increasing or decreasing according to the increasement of the crack propagating velocity. It is confirmed in this study that the increasement or decreasement of stress intensity factor with crack growing velocity is accused by loading condition. When the crack propagates under a constant displacement along upper and lower boundary in finite plate, the dynamic stress intensity factor decreases according to the increasement of the propagating crack velocity. When the crack propagates under a constant stress along upper and lower boundary in finite plate, the dynamic stress intensity factor increases according to the increasement of the propagating crack velocity. The increasement or decreasement of stress intensity factor with crack growing velocity is greater in a fast crack propagation velocity than in a slow one.

  • When the interfacial crack of isotropic/orthotropic bi-materials is propagated with constant velocity along the interface, stress and displacement components are derived in this research. The dynamic photoelastic experimental hybrid method for the bimaterial is introduced. It is assured that stress components and dynamic photoelastic hybrid developed in this research are valid. Separating method of stress components is introduced from only dynamic photoelastic fringe patterns. Crack propagating velocity of interfacial crack is 69∼71% of Rayleigh wave velocity of epoxy resin. The near-field stress components of bonded interface of bimaterial are similar with those of pure isotopic material and two dissimilar isotropic bimaterials under static or dynamic loading, but very near-field stress components of bonded interface of bimaterial are different from those.

  • Dynamic stress intensity factors are derives when the crack is propagating with constant velocity under longitudinal shear stress in orthotropic disk plate. General stress fields of crack tip propagating with constant velocity and least square method are used to obtain the dynamic stress intensity factor. The dynamic stress intensity factors of GLV/GTV=1(=isotropic material or transversely isotropic material) which is obtained in out study nearly coincides with Chiang's results when mode Ⅲ stress is applied to boundary of isotropic disk. The D.S.I.F. of mode Ⅲ stress is greater when α(=angle of crack propagation direction with fiber direction) is 90° than that when α is 0°. In case of a/D(a:crack length, D:disk diameter)<0. 58, the faster crack propagation velocity, the less D.S.I.F. but when crack propagation velocity arrive on ghear stress wave velocity, the D.S.I.F. but when crack propagation velocity arrive on shear stress wave velocity, the D.S.I.F. unexpectedly increases and decreases to zero.

  • In this paper, the group velocity dispersion curves of the $S_o$ symmetric mode in unidirectional CFRP plate was calculated as varying the propagating direction. The group velocity curve was obtained with the group velocities of the $S_o$ symmetric mode corresponding to 0.2 MHz-mm under the first cut-off frequency in the dispersion curves, and corrected by introducing the slowness curve. The velocities of the $S_o$ symmetric mode in the unidirectional CFRP plate were measured as varying the propagating direction and compared with the col?rotted group velocity curve. The measured velocities were good agreement with the corrected group velocity curve except near the fiber direction which was called the cusp region. It implies that the direction of the group velocities incline toward the fiber direction of the unidirectional CFRP plates when the propagation direction is not accorded with the principal axis. It is supposed that this phenomenon rerults from the preferential propagating the energy toward the direction with the faster propagation velocity.

  • The effects of the interface and two holes located near the crack path in the hybrid specimen on the dynamic crack propagation behavior have been investigated using dynamic photoelasticity with the aid of Cranz-Shardin type high speed camera system. The dynamic stress field around the dynamically propagating interface crack tip in the three point bending specimens under a dynamic load applied by a hammer dropped from 0.6m high without initial velocity are recorded. The complex stress intensity factors for the dynamically propagating interface crack are extracted by using a overdeterministic least square method. Theoretical dynamic interface isochromatic fringe loops generated by using the numerically determined complex stress intensity factors are compared with the experimental results. Furthermore, the influence of the hole to the dynamic interface crack velocities has been investigated experimentally.

  • When an impact stress is applied on the external boundary of double cantilever beam of orthotropic material which crack length is greater than specimen hight and anistropic ratio is very high, dyna mic energy release rate is derived, and the relationship between dynamic energy release rate and crack propagating velocity is studied. Dynamic energy release rate to static energy release rate is decreased with increasment of crack propagating velocity. The relationships between dynamic energy release rate and vertical strain have a similar pattern with those between static energy release rate and vertical strain. When normalized time(Cstla) is greater than or equal to 2, dynamic energy release rate approaches to a constant value.

  • This paper is a study on the analysis of normal zone propagating velocity in high Tc superconductor. Steady-state solution is analyzed based upon the one-dimensional heat transfer equation. This model incorporates the temperature and magnetic field dependent superconductor properties. The analytical results indicate that the propagation velocity is not a linear function of operating current, magnetic field and temperature.

  • The Brillouin spectrum of 4'-n-pentyl-4-cyano-biphenyl (5CB) liquid crystals homogeneously confined in a planar liquid crystal (LC) cell was measured using a 6-pass tandem Fabry-Perot interferometer. By adopting a special right-angle scattering geometry, the sound velocity of 5CB was estimated from the Brillouin shift without knowing the refractive index. The sound velocity of the longitudinal wave propagating along the direction of the directors aligned parallel to the glass plates of the LC cell was 1784${\pm}$7 m/s at 300 K. The attenuation coefficient $\alpha$ was estimated to be approximately $1.9{\times}10^6m^{-1}$, which is about twice as large as that of the longitudinal sound wave propagating along the direction perpendicular to the directors. The present method may be very useful in the evaluation of the elastic properties of the materials used in display devices, whose refractive indices are not known.
