In many practical problems in signal processing and control, the signal values are often restricted to belong to a finite number of levels. These questions are generally referred to as "finite alphabet" problems. There are many applications of this class of problems including: on-off control, optimal audio quantization, design of finite impulse response filters having quantized coefficients, equalization of digital communication channels subject to intersymbol interference, and control over networked communication channels. This paper will explain how this diverse class of problems can be formulated as optimization problems having finite alphabet constraints. Methods for solving these problems will be described and it will be shown that a semi-closed form solution exists. Special cases of the result include well known practical algorithms such as optimal noise shaping quantizers in audio signal processing and decision feedback equalizers in digital communication. Associated stability questions will also be addressed and several real world applications will be presented.

Fully homomorphic encryption(FHE) scheme may be the best method to solve the privacy leakage problem in the untrusted servers because of its ciphertext calculability. However, the existing FHE schemes are still not being put into the practical applications due to their low efficiency. Therefore, it is imperative to find a more efficient FHE scheme or to optimize the existing FHE schemes so that they can be put into the practical applications. In this paper, we optimize GSW scheme by using the parallel computing, and finally we get a high-performance FHE scheme, namely PGSW scheme. Experimental results show that the time overhead of the homomorphic operations in new FHE scheme will be reduced manyfold with the increasing of processing units number. Therefore, our scheme can greatly reduce the running time of homomorphic operations and improve the performance of FHE scheme through sacrificing hardware resources. It can be seen that our FHE scheme can catalyze the development of FHE.
Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), widely used for the detection of plant viruses, are not easily performed, resulting in a demand for an innovative and more efficient diagnostic method. This paper summarizes the characteristics and research trends of biosensors focusing on the physicochemical properties of both interface elements and bioconjugates. In particular, the topological and photophysical properties of quantum dots (QDs) are discussed, along with QD-based biosensors and their practical applications. The QD-based Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) genosensor, most widely used in the biomolecule detection fields, and QD-based nanosensor for Rev-RRE interaction assay are presented as examples. In recent years, QD-based biosensors have emerged as a new class of sensor and are expected to open opportunities in plant virus detection, but as yet there have been very few practical applications (Table 3). In this article, the details of those cases and their significance for the future of plant virus detection will be discussed.
Flocculation is a widely used phase separation technique in industrial unit processes and is typically observed in many natural flow systems. Advances in colloidal chemistry over the past decades has vastly improved our understanding of this phenomenon. However, in many practical applications, process engineering still lags developments in colloidal science thereby creating a gap in knowledge. While significant progress has been made in environmental process engineering research over the past decades, there is still a need to align these two inter-dependent fields of research more closely. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the flocculation mechanism from empirical and theoretical perspective, discuss its practical applications, and examines the need and direction of future research.

In this paper, we address practical methods for calculating camera lens distortion for real time applications. Although the lens distortion problem can be easily ignored for constant-parameter lenses, in the field of real-time camera calibrations, for zoom lenses a large number of calculations are needed to calculate the distortion. However, if the distortion can be calculated independently of the other camera parameter, we can easily calibrate a camera without the need for a large number of calculations. Based on Tsai's camera model, we propose two different methods for calculating lens distortion. These methods are so simple and require so few calculations that the lens distortion can be rapidly calculated even in real-time applications. The first method is to refer to the focal length - lens distortion Look Up Table(LUT), which is constructed in the initialization process. The second method is to use the relationship between the feature points found in the image. Experiments were carried out for both methods, results of which show that the proposed methods are favorably comparable in performance with non-real full optimization method.
This paper presents practical applications of reactive power and voltage planning to obtain voltage stability and operational voltage level for 2005 year summer peak Korea power system. It also describes the new electric facilities, operation criteria, voltage levels, MVAr flows, reactive power reserves in each control area. And reactive compensation devices are installed to maintain established voltage levels and stability margins. This simulation results show the improvement of voltage levels and the increase of reactive margins & interface flow margins. Finally, the paper reports the necessity of dynamic reactive reserves. It can be applied to analysis reactive compensation requirements and P-V & V-Q curves by PSS/E & VSAT.
Generalized strictly diagonally dominant matrices have a wide range of applications in matrix theory and practical applications, so it is of great theoretical and practical value to study their numerical determination methods. In this paper, we study the numerical determination of generalized strictly diagonally dominant matrices by using the properties of generalized strictly diagonally dominant matrices. We obtain a new criterion for subdivision iteration determination of the generalized strictly diagonally dominant matrices by subdividing the set of non-prevailing row indices and constructing new iteration factors for the set of predominant row indices, new elements of the positive diagonal factors are derived. Advantages are illustrated by numerical examples.

The purpose of this study is to overview domestic and foreign trends in the study of the landscape evaluation through new framework of landscape evaluation studies. 108 studies on the landscape evaluation are summarized and categorized into theoretical studies, verification of theories, development of evaluation methods and applications in physical planning. Major theories in the landscape evaluation came from the psycho-physics, the evolutionary theory ann the cultural-learning theory, and were verified and applied into physical planning. Early experimental researches on landscape evaluation, based on psycho-physics, were focused on relatively simple responses to landscapes. But many studies have been gradually related to the evolutionary theory and the cultural learning theory, emphasizing biological and cultural effects on landscape evaluation. Especially, Appleton's Prospect-Refuge theory' and Kaplans' 'Information Processing model' have very strong influence in landscape evaluation. Relatively there have been many application researches in Korea, which tells there have been strong needs to solve pending practical problems caused by the rapid economic and social growth for several decades. Almost of applications in physical planning are focused on physical features of landscapes, but for more comprehensive landscape evaluation, many other factors such as cognitive and sociocultural variables should be integrated into the whole evaluation system. As a result of reviewing of landscape evaluation studies, I found the overall domestic and foreign trends and the necessity of more research on the applications in physical planning. Because this study mainly focused on academic researches, for more appropriate landscape evaluation and management there should be more practical researches including various approaches.
Rare-earth barium copper oxide (REBCO) coated conductor (CC) tapes have already been commercialized but still possess some issues in terms of manufacturing cost, anisotropic in-field performance, $I_c$ response to mechanical loads such as delamination, homogeneity of current transport property, and production length. Development on improving its performance properties to meet the needs in practical device applications is underway and simplification of the tape's architecture and manufacturing process are also being considered to enhance the performance-cost ratio. As compared to low temperature superconductors (LTS), high temperature superconductor (HTS) REBCO CC tapes provide a much wider range of operating temperature and a higher critical current density at 4.2 K making it more attractive in magnet and coil applications. The superior properties of the REBCO CC tapes under magnetic field have led to the development of superconducting magnets capable of producing field way above 23.5 T. In order to achieve its optimum performance, the electromechanical properties under different deformation modes and magnetic field should be evaluated for practical device design. This paper gives an overview of the effects of mechanical stress/strain on $I_c$ in HTS CC tapes due to uniaxial tension, bending deformation, transverse load, and including the electrical performance of a CC tape joint which were performed by our group at ANU in the last decade.

Nowadays, steel fiber reinforced concretes (SFRCs) are widely used in practical applications. Significant experimental research has thus been carried out to determine the constitutive equations that represent the behavior of SFRCs under multiaxial loadings. However, numerical modelling of SFRCs via FEM has been challenging due to the complexities of the implementation of these constitutive equations. In this study, following the literature, a plasticity model is constructed for the behavior of SFRCs that involves the Willam-Warnke failure surface with the relevant evolution laws and a non-associated flow rule for determining the plastic deformations. For the precise (yet rapid) integration of the constitutive equations, an explicit substepping scheme consisting of yield intersection and drift correction algorithms is employed and thus implemented in ABAQUS via UMAT. The FEM model includes various material parameters that are determined from the experimental data. Three sets of parameters are used in the numerical simulations. While the first set is from the experiments that are conducted in this study on SFRC specimens with various contents of steel fibers, the other two sets are from the experiments reported in the literature. The response of SFRCs under multiaxial compression obtained from various numerical simulations are compared with the experimental data. The good agreement between numerical results and the experimental data indicates that not only the adopted plasticity model represents the behavior of SFRCs very well but also the implemented integration scheme can be employed in practical applications of SFRCs.
