  • Over the last decade multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) systems have been actively researched and started to be deployed in wireless communications owing to the significant increase in channel capacity. In this paper, we propose a energy saving MAC protocol in systems by focusing on energy efficiency instead of capacity maximization. We considers the energy consumption together with the tradeoff between reliability (i.e., diversity) and throughput (i.e., multiplexing gain), and dynamically chooses an appropriate number of antennas for transmission. In computing the total energy consumption, we counts circuit energy as well as transmission energy. Naturally the circuit energy consumption is directly proportional to the number of active antennas. Through numerical analysis, we confirm that our power saving MAC scheme for MIMO considerably saves energy consumption compared to conventional capacity maximization schemes that use a fixed number of MIMO channels, for a given outage constraint. Our finding is that the capacity maximizing communication which possibly can be regarded best in terms of energy efficiency gives a different solution from the energy minimizing communication.

  • This paper presents a bidirectional DC-DC converter suitable for low-voltage super capacitor-based electric energy storage systems. The DC-DC converter presented here consists of a full-bridge circuit and a current-fed push-pull circuit with a high frequency (HF) transformer-link. In order to reduce the device-conduction losses due to the large current of the super capacitor as well as unnecessary ringing, synchronous rectification is employed in the super capacitor-charging mode. A wide range of voltage regulation between the battery and the super capacitor can be realized by employing a Phase-Shifting (PS) Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) scheme in the full-bridge circuit for the super capacitor charging mode as well as the overlapping PWM scheme of the gate signals to the active power devices in the push-pull circuit for the super capacitor discharging mode. Essential performance of the bidirectional DC-DC converter is demonstrated with simulation and experiment results, and the practical effectiveness of the DC-DC converter is discussed.

  • During an AC motor's start-up accelerating period, a large amount of current is required to reach to the rating speed. This is called in-rush current. This peak in-rush current can be more than about several times the operating or steady-state current in the full load rating of the motor. In-rush current is present in both and electronic ballasts. The main area of concern is the tripping of circuit breaker and fuses which can affect electrical system components From this, we can see that the electrical power controllers will be rather concerned, since they have to supply the actual current necessary to start the motor. This paper presents a new method to reducing in-rush current and energy saving of the single-phase induction motor used in air-conditioner. It can be obtained that proposed system is low cost and small size as compared with other controller. Experiments are focused on a capacitor starting single-phase induction motor. The optimal power saving and in-rush current limiting by phase angle control are verified by experimental results. Also, auxiliary winding was controlled by electronic starting switch.

  • In this research, we have studied the development of dc-dc converter suitable for the driving of mobile instruments by using a dye-sensitized solar cell(DSC). We also have designed a interlocking circuit. The circuit makes power from DSC be saved in one battery and concurrently be discharged in the other battery. As this application, mobile devices like MP3, cellular phone are drived by using power from DSC during the daytime and they can be drived by using the saving energy of the daytime during the night. Besides, we designed dc-dc converter circuit to drive low power instruments by using NMOS switch and PMOS rectifier.

  • We report a STT-MRAM write-scheme, in which the length of the write-pulse is determined dynamically by sensing the status of MTJ cells. The proposed scheme can reduce the power consumption by eliminating unnecessary writing current after the switching has occurred. We also propose a reference cell design, which is optimized for the use in write-circuits. The performance of the proposed circuit was verified by SPICE level simulations of the circuit implemented in a $0.13{\mu}m$ CMOS process.

  • A new level shifter using low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) thin-film transistors (TFTs) for low-power applications is proposed. The proposed level shifter uses a capacitive-coupling effect and can reduce the power consumption owing to its no-short-circuit current. Its power saving over the conventional level shifter is 72% for a 3.3 V input and a 10 V output.

  • Power saving module which is consisted of ferroelectric ceramic capacitor and time delay switching circuit was installed into electronic ballast in order to enhance energy efficacy and extend life time of fluorescent lamp. The impedance matching of negative resistance characteristics of F/L was optimized with the characteristics of ferroelectric ceramics capacitor to increase the light efficiency of the electronic ballast. The high efficiency of the electronic ballast was achieved by minimizing wasted power at the filament of F/L during the lighting by using the switching function of time delay circuit from preheating mode to non-preheating mode. The life time of F/L was also extended by eliminating the reverse electromotive force using time delay circuits to minimize the impacts to the filament of F/L from unwanted high voltage peaks during light-up period. As the results, the electronic ballast with the first grade energy efficiency was developed using ferroelectric ceramics and time delay module.

  • This paper presents a low-power voltage converter based on a reconfigurable capacitor array. Its energy recycling capacitor array stores the energy during a charge stage and supplies the voltage during an energy recycle stage even after the power source is disconnected. The converter reconfigures the capacitor array step-wise to boost the lost voltage level during the energy recycle stage. Its energy saving is particularly effective when most of the energy remaining in the charge capacitors is wasted by the leakage current during a longer sleep period. Simulations have been conducted using a voltage source of 500 mV to supply a $V_{DD}$ of around 800 mV to a load circuit consisting of four 32-bit adders in a 65-nm CMOS process. Results demonstrate energy recycling efficiency of 85.86% and overall energy saving of 40.14% compared to a conventional converter, when the load circuit is shortly active followed by a long sleep period.

  • This paper presents a prototype of three-phase current source zero voltage soft-switching PWM controlled PFC rectifier with Single Active Auxiliary Resonant Commutated Snubber (ARCS) circuit topology. The proposed three-phase PFC rectifier with sinewave current shaping and unity power factor scheme can operate under a condition of Zero Voltage Soft Switching (ZVS) in the main three phase rectifier circuit and zero current soft switching (ZCS) in auxiliary snubber circuits. The operating principle and steady-state performances of the proposed three-phase current source soft-switching PWM controlled PFC rectifier controlled by the DSP control implementation are evaluated and discussed on the basis of the experimental results of this active rectifier setup.
