  • Low-power design is one of the most important challenges encountered in maximizing battery life in portable devices as well as saving energy during system operation. In this paper we propose a low-power DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) architecture using a modified Computation Sharing Multiplication (CSHM). The overall rate of power consume is reduced during DCT: the proposed architecture does not perform arithmetic operations on unnecessary bits during the Computation Sharing Multiplication calculations. Experimental results show that it is possible to reduce power dissipation up to about $7{\sim}8%$ without compromising the final DCT results. The proposed lowpower DCT architecture can be applied to consumer electronics as well as portable multimedia systems requiring high throughput and low-power.

  • Smart hand-held devices like iPhone, iPad, Andriod and other mobile-OS machines are becoming a well known part of our daily lives. Utilization of these devices has gone beyond the expectations of their inventors. Evolution of Apple's iOS from a mobile phone Operating System to a wholesome platform for Portable Gaming is an adequate proof. Using these smart devices people are downloading applications from numerous online App Stores. Utilizing remote storage facilities and confining themselves to computing power far below than an entry level laptop, netbooks have emerged. Google's idea of Chrome OS coupled with Google's AppEngine is an eye-opener for researchers and developers. Keeping all these industry-proven innovations in mind we are proposing a Context-Driven Cloud-Oriented Application Architecture for smart devices. This architecture enables our smart devices to behave smarter by utilizing very less of local resources.

  • The desire of achieving abundant and various information in Web-sites through portable devices is increased as the mobile communication technology is matured. WML(Wireless Markup Language) is the fundamental language to fill up the those desires. The number of commercial WML sites which can be accessed by PCS(Personal Communication System) over the Internet are growing rapidly worldwide. In this paper, a WML authoring tool which can author easily the homepage suitable for PCS is designed and implemented. The usability of the proposed WML authoring tool was confirmed by using UP.SDK simulator over the Internet.

  • Ubiquitous technology is the trend towards increasingly ubiquitous, connected computing devices in the environment, a trend being brought about by a convergence of advanced electronic - and particularly, wireless - technologies and the internet. Ubiquitous technology is pervasive in nature and unobtrusively embedded in the environment, completely connected, intuitive, effortlessly portable, and constantly available. The object of this paper is to describe the strategy plan for Ubiquitous-Urban Transit Total Information System.

  • We present a simple and cost effective rate control scheme for streaming video over a wireless channel by using the information of mobile devices' buffer level. To prevent buffer fullness and emptiness at receivers, the server should be able to adjust sending rate according to receivers' buffer status. We propose methods to adjust sending rate based on the buffer level and discrete derivative of the buffer occupancy. To be compatible with existing network protocols, we provide methods to adjust sending rate by changing the inter-packet delay (IPD) at the server side. At every round-trip time, adjustments of sending rate are made in order to achieve responsiveness to sudden changes of buffer availabilities. A series of simulations and the prototype system showed that the proposed methods did not cause buffer overflows and it can maintain smoother rate control and react to bandwidth changes promptly.

  • IEEE 802.15.4 low-rate Wireless Personal Area Networks(WPAN) are expected to provide ubiquitous networking between small personal/home devices and sensors with low power consumption and low cost features. The technology employs special CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/collision Avoidance) to save power consumption for small or portable WPAN-enabled devices. In this paper, we simulation the slotted CSMA/CA of IEEE 802.15.4 MAC and evaluate its performance limit in order to grasp the characteristics of Medium Access Control (MAC) of IEEE 802.15.4 WPAN.

  • The need for embedded devices to be able to exchange information with each other and with data centers is essential for the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT). Several existing communication protocols are designed for small devices including the message-queue telemetry transport (MQTT) protocol or the constrained application protocol (CoAP). However, most of the existing implementations are convenient for computers or smart phones but do not consider the strict constraints and limitations with regard resource usage, portability and configuration. In this paper, we report on an industrial research and development project which focuses on the design, implementation, testing and deployment of a MQTT module. The goal of this project is to develop this module for platforms having minimal RAM, flash code memory and processing power. This software module should be fully compliant with the MQTT protocol specification, portable, and inter-operable with other software stacks. In this paper, we present our approach based on abstraction layers to the design of the MQTT module and we discuss the compliance of the implementation with the requirements set including the MISRA static analysis requirements.

  • In accordance with the global strengthening of security systems for the safety of the shipping and logistics industry, the development of core technologies within the field has become a key in the establishment of Korea's own national logistics security system. Further in line with these global developments, there is growing attention within Korea to the development of portable radiation detectors capable of detecting gamma ray nuclides. In addition, many parts are becoming localized. In this research, instead of Pulse Shaping Board, which is used in existing portable radiation detectors, we have implemented an Algorithm to discriminate nuclides and correct the temperature conversion efficiency of the scintillator. This paper aims to improve the performance of these devices through the implementation of a temperature conversional algorithm within the scintillator of the A9-based digital portable radiation detector.
