  • Finite element method has been applied to solve the fundamental governing equations of natural convective, electrically conducting, incompressible fluid flow past an infinite vertical plate surrounded by porous medium in presence of thermal radiation, viscous dissipation, Soret and Dufour effects. In this research work, the results of coupled partial differential equations are found numerically by applying finite element technique. The sway of significant parameters such as Soret number, Dufour number, Grashof number for heat and mass transfer, Magnetic field parameter, Thermal radiation parameter, Permeability parameter on velocity, temperature and concentration evaluations in the boundary layer region are examined in detail and the results are shown in graphically. Furthermore, the effect of these parameters on local skin friction coefficient, local Nusselt number and Sherwood numbers is also investigated. A very good agreement is noticed between the present results and previous published works in some limiting cases.

  • A new porous silicon (PSi) microcavity sensor for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was developed. PSi microcavity sensor exhibiting unique reflectivity was successfully obtained by an electrochemical etching of silicon wafer. When PSi was fabricated into a structure consisting of two high reflectivity muktilayer mirrors separated by an active layer, a microcavity was formed. This PSi microcavity is very sensitive structures. Reflection spectrum of PSi microcavity indicated that the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) was of 10 nm and much narrower than that of fluorescent organic molecules or quantum dot. The detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using PSi microcavity was achieved. When the vapor of VOCs condensed in the nanopores, the refractive indices of entire particle increased. When PSi microcavity was exposed to acetone, ether, and toluene, PSi microcavity in reflectivity was red shifted by 28 nm, 33 nm, and 20 nm for 2 sec, respectively.

  • A novel porous-core hexagonal lattice photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is designed and analyzed for efficient terahertz (THz) wave propagation. The finite element method based Comsol v4.2 software is used for numerical analysis of the proposed fiber. A perfectly matched layer boundary condition is used to characterize the guiding properties. Rectangular air-holes are used inside the core to introduce asymmetry for attaining high birefringence. By intentionally rotating the rectangular air holes of porous core structure, an ultrahigh birefringence of 0.045 and low effective material loss of $0.086cm^{-1}$ can be obtained at the operating frequency of 0.85 THz. Moreover, single-mode properties, power fraction in air core and confinement loss of the proposed PCF are also analyzed. This is expected to be useful for wideband imaging and telecom applications.

  • Palladium membranes have high selectivity of separation and removal of hydrogen to chemical process at high temperature. For the development of hydrogen permeable membrane, palladium was deposited on porous stainless steel support by electroless plating method. In this work, the activation effect on the surface of stainless steel support has been investigated for the effective palladium plating. The morphology and microstructure were characterized by SEM and the composition was analyzed by EDX. It is found that the composition of deposited nuclei on the stainless steel support was changed in accordance with activation cycles. It is also observed that Sn-enriched nuclei has been changed to Pd-enriched nuclei over the fifteenth activation. The uniform deposition of the dense palladium layer on porous stainless steel support has been performing with Sn-enriched nuclei and comparing with Pd-enriched nuclei.

  • In the present research, dynamic deflections of a sandwich beam having functionally graded (FG) porous core have been investigated assuming that the sandwich beam is exposed to a pulse load of blast type. The two layers of sandwich beam have been made of a polymeric matrix reinforced by graphene oxide powder (GOP). The micromechanical formulation of the layers has been done via Halpin-Tsai model. The solution method is chosen to be Ritz method which is an efficient method to solve the system of equations of beams modeled based on a higher-order theory. To derive the time history of sandwich beam under pulse load, Laplace method has been used. The porosity content of the core, the GOP content of the layers, thickness of the layer and also duration of the applied load have great influences of the responses of sandwich beam.

  • Porous reaction bonded SiC with high fracture strength was developed using Si melt infiltration method for use of the support layer in high temperature gas filter that is essential to develop the next generation power system such as integrated gasification combined cycle system. The porosity and pore size of porous RBSC developed in this study were in the range of 32∼36% and 37∼90 ${\mu}m$ respectively and the maximum fracture strength of porous RBSC fabricated was 120 MPa. The fracture strength and thermal shock resistance of porous RBSC fabricated by Si melt infiltration were much improved compared to those of commercially available porous clay bonded SiC due to the formation of the strong SiC/Si interface between SiC particles. The characteristics of pore structure of porous RBSC was varied depending on the amounts of residual Si as Well as the size of SiC particle used in green body.

  • This study investigates the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) sensing characteristics of an Si MOSFET gas sensor with a tungsten trioxide (WO3) sensing layer deposited using the sputtering method. The Si MOSFET gas sensor consists of a horizontal floating gate (FG) interdigitated with a control gate (CG). The WO3 sensing layer is deposited on the interdigitated CG-FG of a field effect transistor(FET)-type gas sensor platform. The sensing layer is deposited with different thicknesses of the film ranging from 100 nm to 1 ㎛ by changing the deposition times during the sputtering process. The sensing characteristics of the fabricated gas sensor are measured at different NO2 concentrations and operating temperatures. The response of the gas sensor increases as the NO2 concentration and operating temperature increase. However, the gas sensor has an optimal performance at 180℃ considering both response and recovery speed. The response of the gas sensor increases significantly from 24% to 138% as the thickness of the sensing layer increases from 100 nm to 1 ㎛. The sputtered WO3 film consists of a dense part and a porous part. As reported in previous work, the area of the porous part of the film increases as the thickness of the film increases. This increased porous part promotes the reaction of the sensing layer with the NO2 gas. Consequently, the response of the gas sensor increases as the thickness of the sputtered WO3 film increases.

  • Here we consider magneto-convection in a mushy layer which is formed during solidification of binary alloys. The mushy layer is treated as an active porous media with variable permeability. The equations governing the layer are conservation of mass, conservation of heat, conservation of solute, magnetic induction equation, momentum equation governed by the Darcy's law and Maxwell's equations for the magnetic field. To study the second order effects on the flow without solving the second order system, we need to obtain the adjoint system for the flow. This motivates the authors we derive the adjoint system analytically for the mushy layer case. Numerical results of the adjoint system are presented for passive and active mushy layers at the onset of the motion using a set of parameters experimentalists use.

  • Durability characteristics of Gas Diffusion Layer(GDL) is one of the important issues for accomplishing commercialization of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell(PEMFC). It is strongly related to the performances of PEMFC because one of the main functions of GDL is to work as a path of fuel, air and water. When the GDL does not work on their proposed functions due to the degradation of durability, mass transfer in PEMFC is disturbed and it might cause the flooding phenomenon. Thus, investigating the durability of GDL is important and understanding the GDL degradation process is needed. In this study, electrochemical degradation with carbon corrosion is introduced. The carbon corrosion experiment is carried out with GDLs which have different MPL penetration thicknesses. After the experiment, the amount of degradation of GDL is measured with various properties of GDL such as weight, thickness and performance of the PEMFC. The degraded GDL shows loss of their properties.
