  • This paper is concerned with the static analysis of variable thickness of two directional functionally graded porous materials (FGPM) circular plate resting on a gradient hybrid foundation (Horvath-Colasanti type) with friction force and subjected to compound mechanical loads (e.g., transverse, in-plane shear traction and concentrated force at the center of the plate). The governing state equations are derived in terms of displacements based on the 3D theory of elasticity, assuming the elastic coefficients of the plate material except the Poisson's ratio varying continuously throughout the thickness and radial directions according to an exponential function. These equations are solved semi-analytically by employing the state space method (SSM) and one-dimensional differential quadrature (DQ) rule to obtain the displacements and stress components of the FGPM plate. The effect of concentrated force at the center of the plate is approximated with the shear force, uniformly distributed over the inner boundary of a FGPM annular plate. In addition to verification study and convergence analysis, numerical results are displayed to show the effect of material heterogeneity indices, foundation stiffness coefficients, foundation gradient indices, loads ratio, thickness to radius ratio, compressibility, porosity and friction coefficient of the foundation on the static behavior of the plate. Finally, the responses of FG and FG porous material circular plates to compound mechanical loads are compared.

  • This study investigates the bending stress, shear stress and deformation energy happening at the inner fiber structure when the bending moment is applied to he specimen with flat shape composed of carbon fiber. As CFRP is composed of innumerable fibers with multi-axes, the stress under bending condition can be effectively distributed. Theses stresses is shown to increase again at the starting point as this angle of $60^{\circ}$. Therefore, the condition at the stacking angle of $60^{\circ}$ is seen to become most adequate under the state where the bending stress happens. On the basis of this study result, the damage property by the bending at the plate due to stacking angle was examined through the analytic approach. it is thought that this study can be devoted to the safe design for damage prevention and durabilty improvement. Also, the esthetic sense can be shown as the designed factor of shape with flat plate is grafted onto the convergence technique.

  • Polymer exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells have multifunctional properties, and bipolar plates are one of the key components in these fuel cells. Generally, a bipolar plate has a gas flow path for hydrogen and oxygen liberated at the anode and cathode, respectively. In this study, the influence of iodine applied to a bipolar plate was investigated. Accordingly, we compared bipolar plates with and without iodine coating, and the performances of these plates were evaluated under operating conditions of $75^{\circ}C$ and 100% relative humidity. The membrane and platinum-carbon layer were affected by the iodine-coated bipolar plate. Bipolar plates coated with iodine and a membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) were investigated by electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. Polarization curves showed that the performance of a coated bipolar plate is approximately 19% higher than that of a plate without coating. Moreover, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis revealed that charge transfer resistance and membrane resistance decreased with the influence of the iodine charge transfer complex for fuel cells on the performance.

  • This study presents the characteristics of a pressure drop and uniformity index for a particulate matter reduction device with a perforated plate and mixer for marine diesel engines. The perforated plate and mixer equipped on the particulate matter reduction device induce an increase of exhaust gas reduction performance by increasing the uniformity index. Whereas, the perforated plate induces pressure drop increases in the particulate matter reduction device. Therefore to calculate the effect of the uniformity index and pressure drop of the perforated plates and mixer, this study combines several cases using five types of perforated plates and one type of mixer. Consequently, these results were analyzed to determine the optimized type and position of the perforated plate and mixer.

  • This paper will compare $T3{\gamma}_s$ and MITC3 elements, both these two elements are three-node triangular plate bending elements with three degrees of freedom per node. The formulation of the $T3{\gamma}_s$ and MITC3 elements is rather simple and has already been widely used. This paper will prove that the shear strain formulation of these two elements is identical even though they are obtained from two different methods. A single element is used to test the formulation of shear strain matrices. Numerical tests for circular plate cases compared with the exact solutions and with DKMT element will complete this review to verify the performances and show the convergence of these two elements.

  • This study compares and analyzes the results of structural analyses due to three constraint conditions on the emblem for car. The analysis results are studied by investigating the influence due to the column angle combined between the lower plate of amblem and the upper amblem. The combined with the amblem is parallel to the longitudinal axle of the amblem at the first case. The angle combined with the amblem is perpendicular to the lower plate at the second case. The angle combined with the amblem is perpendicular to the amblem at the third case as the last case. The amblem model for car can be thought to be optimized by investigating the fatigue life and the durability of amblem through the simulation of structural and fatigue analyses. And it is possible to be grafted onto the convergence technique at design and show the esthetic sense.

  • Roll-based, nanoimprint lithography (Roll-NIL) is one effective method to produce large-area nanopatterns continuously. Systems and processes for Roll-NIL have been developed and studied for more than 15 years. Since the shapes of the stamp and the substrate for Roll-NIL can be plates, films, and rolls, there exist many concepts to design and implement roll-NIL systems. Combinations and variations of contact-methods for variously shaped stamps and substrates are analyzed in this paper. The contact-area can be changed by using soft materials such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) or silicone rubber. Ultraviolet (UV) sources appropriate for the roll-to-plate or roll-to-roll process are introduced. Finally, two roll-to-plate nanoimprint lithography systems are illustrated.

  • Recently, a problem related to the thermal management in portable electronic and telecommunication devices is becoming issued. That is due to the trend of a slimness of the devices, so it is not easy to find the optimal thermal management solution for the devices. From now on, a pressed circular type cooling device has been mainly used, however the cooling device with thin thickness is becoming needed by the inner space constraint of the applications. In the present study, the silicon flat plate type cooling device with the separated vapor and liquid flow path was designed and fabricated. The normal isothermal characteristics created by vapor-liquid phase change was confirmed through the experimental study. The cooling device with 70 mm of total length showed 6.8 W of the heat transfer rate within the range of $4{\sim}5^{\circ}C/W$ of thermal resistance. In the future, it will be possible to develop the commercialized cooling device by revising the fabrication process and enhancing the thermal performance of the silicon and glass cooling device.

  • Micro hollow plate type silica with low refraction properties was synthesized and its hollow structure was applied as an optical structure to develop a light diffusion material that simultaneously satisfies the requirements of good light diffusibility, high transmissibility, and high luminance. The developed light diffusion material was applied to a light diffusion film and the film's optical properties were assessed. Hollow silica was synthesized by precipitation method using $Mg(OH)_2$ core particles, sodium silicate, and ammonium sulfate as the silica precursors. The concentration of the silica precursor was adjusted to control hollow silica shell thickness. The total light transmittance of the light diffusion film composed of the hollow silica was 94.55%, which was 4.57% higher than that of the PC film; new film's haze was 71.20%, which was 70.9% higher. Furthermore, the luminance increased by 5.34% compared to that of the light source. The reason for the results is not only that the micro plate type hollow silica, which has a low refractive property, played a role in reducing the difference in refractive index between the medium boundaries, but also that there was a light-concentrating effect due to the changing of light paths to the front direction inside the hollow structure. Optical simulation verified the enhanced optical properties when hollow silica was applied to the light diffusion film.

  • This paper presents a theoretic model of a smart structure, a transversely isotropic piezoelectric thick square plate constructed with three laminas, piezoelectric-elastic-piezoelectric layer, by adopting the first order shear deformation plate theory and piezoelectric theory. This model assumes that the transverse displacements through thickness are linear, and the in-plane displacements in the mid-plane of the plate are not taken to be account. By using Fourier's series expansion, an exact Navier typed analytical solution for deflection and electric potential of the simply supported smart plate is obtained. The electric boundary conditions are being grounded along four vertical edges. The external voltage and non-external voltage applied on the surfaces of piezoelectric layers are all considered. The convergence of the present approach is carefully studied. Comparison studies are also made for verifying the accuracy and the applicability of the present method. Then some new results of the electric potentials and displacements are provided. Numerical results show that the electrostatic voltage is approximately linear in the thickness direction, while parabolic in the plate in-plane directions, for both the deflection and the electric voltage. These results are very useful for distributed sensing and finite element verification.
