Flesh gingers harvested domestically in Seosan and Wanju area and imported from China were used to investigate their regional quality characteristics related to morphological properties-weight, maximum length, thickness, no. of branches, whole volume, hardness and surface color. Weights of ginger were mostly distributed in the range of $50{\sim}100\;g$; 47.6% of Seosan, 67.4% of Wanju and 45.7% of China gingers were in this range. Length and thickness of each gingers were increased with weight increment. The length of Seosan gingers was uniformly distributed overall, and the thickness of domestic products tends to be thinner than China ones. Branch number of domestic gingers was more widely distributed than China ones which had higher values than domestic's in volume. Domestic gingers were relatively harder than china ones, especially Seosan products was hardest among them. The surface color of China gingers was little more brighter than domestic's while domestic gingers were more yellowish. Statistical analyses showed a high correlation among physical properties except surface color and a functional relation between variables.

Algal communities are important to maintain the aquatic ecosystems function. Algae have short life cycles, they respond quickly to environmental change and their diversity and density can indicate and the quality of their habitat. The bloom forms before the rice seedings have emerged, it may present a physical barrier that prevents the seedlings from penetrating the floodwater. Wind may also move the algal bloom, pushing the young plants beneath the surface. Another harmful action develops when the water dries up and the algae form a layer at the bottom of the field. The layer envelops the seedlings, which are not yet deeply rooted, and drag them to the surface when the water is let in again. Soil utilization pattern can be the mail facter affecting soil physico-chemical properties, especially in soil phosphorus (P). Solid content of the algae culture solution increased with the increase in the nitrogen rather the phosphors concentration. Phosphoric acid was treated with conventional treatments (100-0%, before transplanting time-tillering stage), 50-50%, 0-100%, and un-treated. The herbicide was treated on the 7 DAT (day after transplanting). Green algae samples were collected 20 DAT. Total phosphoric acid was the highest at 0.06 in 50-50% treatment in 20 DAT. The amount of green algae was about twice (9.8 mg/20ml) that of un-treated. Total number of green algae was 54 species(Green algae 35 species, Euglena 9 species, Stone wheel 10 species). Among the phosphoric acid treatment methods, the number of occurrences of green algae were the highest with 39 species in 0-100%, followed by 50-50%, 28 species, conventional treatments, 22 species, non-treatment, 18 species, respectively. Rice Yield was not significantly different by phosphoric treatment time, but slightly higher than un-treated. The maximal algal biomass was observed about 2weeks or 1 month after transplanting; the subsequent decrease of the biomass was related to the consumption by grazers and to a deficient light under the rice canopy. Maximal algal growth was observed just before tillering. To estimate the suitable method of phosphorus application in puddled-soil drill seeding of rice, available phosphorus appearance of algal water bloom, and rice yield were investigated in paddy soil of rice-barley double cropping system.
The growth of weeds and some other plants has been considered to be inhibited by sicklepod(Cassia tora L.) sharing the habitat. The study was conducted, for the first time, to propose that this phenomenon is not only due to competition for physical and nutritional conditions but also due to allelopathy. In addition, autotoxicity of sicklepod was examined. The results are summarized as follows. 1. Rice sheath length reduced progressively from 18 % to 36 % with increasing the concentration of treating aqueous extracts of sickle pod seeds, but rice germination was not affected. In contrast, radish hypocotyl length was not reduced by the aqueous extract treatment but radish germination was significantly reduced by 66 % at 1 : 10 and 1 : 5 treatment. 2. Total chlorophyll contents in rice seedling decreased from 50 % to 65 % by treatment of seed aqueous extracts diluted from 1 : 50 to 1 : 5 ratio. 3. Aqueous extracts of sicklepod leaves significantly reduced hypocotyl length and fresh weight in radish and germination in rice, but mung bean was slightly affected by aqueous extracts only in fresh weight. 4. Volatiles from fresh, immature seeds with husk reduced the radish germination and seedling growth and radish root growth appeared to be more sensitive to the exposure to volatiles from fresh immature seeds than both germination and hypocotyl growth. 5. Volatiles from sickepod leaves inhibited germination and growth of radish, rice and mung bean, and seedling growth was more sensitive to volatiles from leaves than germination. 6. Volatiles from sicklepod leaves reduced germination and radicle length of sicklepod itself. 7. Collectively, it is concluded that there are water-soluble and volatile substances responsible for allelopathy in sicklepod.
Berchemia berchemiaefolia is a rare and endangered species and important as a honey resource. The purposes of this study were to investigate physical environmental factors and the population and community structure of Berchemia berchemiaefolia stands at Mt. Gunja in Sogrisan National Park in Chungcheongbuk-do. The B. berchemiaefolia stands belonged to deciduous forests in mid-temperate zone and were $5{\sim}25^{\circ}$ in slope, 30~90% in rock ratio, and 6.37 in soil pH. They had 656 trees within the area of 36 ha and their average density was 18.2 trees per ha. The trees within the stands were 11.8 m in tree height, 22.6 cm in DBH and 56 years old. The number of branched stems was the maximum 8 and 32.9% of the trees were branched. B. berchemiaefolia trees over 12 cm diameter occupied 89.9%, but young B. berchemiaefolia did only 11%. The structure of B. berchemiaefolia stands were classified into three groups as Acer pseudo-sieboldianum & A. mono community group, A. pseudo-sieboldianum & Quercus aliena community group, and B. berchemiaefolia & Quercus serata community group. The mean importance value of B. berchemiaefolia was 10.9%, while species diversity of the community ranged 0.77~1.31 and interspecific competition ranged 0.78~0.94. The dominance of the community ranged of 0.07~0.29 and the evenness ranged 0.71~0.93. Although B. berchemiaefolia was dominant in the habitat, but the species was already in natural successional stage to Cornus controversa or Ulmus davidiana var. japonica.

Northern pipevine (Aristolochia contorta) commonly inhabits marginal areas between waterside and terrestrial vegetation. In particular, A. contorta is ecologically important in the marginal areas as a food plant of dragon swallowtail butterfly (Sericinus montela), which is designated as vulnerable species in the Republic of Korea. For long-term sustainability of the plant population, assessment of the genetic diversity of exist populations should be conducted. Genomic DNA of A. contorta leaf samples were extracted from four populations where the vigorous growth were observed in the South Korea. Intra-population genetic diversity and inter-population genetic distance were assessed using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) with five polymorphic random primers. Overall genetic diversity was lower, compared to other wetland species (h: 0.0607 ~ 0.1401; I: 0.0819 ~ 0.1759), while GP showed the highest intra-population genetic diversity. Despite of the geographical distance, GP showed the larger genetic distance from other populations. This result seemed to be caused by the fragmented habitat and lower sexual reproduction of A. controta. Mixture of the different source populations and construction of the proper environmental condition such as shade and physical support for sexual reproduction should be considered for conservation of A. contorta population.

Physical disturbance, which induces a lack of flow rate, frequently occurs in freshwater ecosystem. Due to this, it is required to provide a new fish shelter to resolve. We installed a pilot scale test-bed to scrutinize the relationship between water level and the influence of fish shelter. The proposed ADP (artificial deep pool) is a fish shelter which composed of concrete materials. From the monitoring results in test-bed, it was observed that the population of fish was the highest at the 0.5 m in depth from the water level of experimental pond. But it was more appropriate for shallow water level (<0.3 m) to conserve the total number of fish by increasing the number per unit area despite of lower inner temperature and DO than outer environment. Therefore, inner of ADP was more efficient lentic system for fish to live due to higher WCS, OS, SS, and TS. In addition, there was a relative abundance of WCS fish species such as Acheilognathus koreensis (A. koreensis), Carassius carassius (C. carassius). Considered these results, it is suggested that ADP is appropriate to use for fish shelter and habitat for the fishes in lentic ecosystem.
We reviewed and compared nationwide surveys conducted in advanced countries (i.e., Japan, Germany, USA, and UK) with those in Korea, including the third Nationwide Survey of Natural Environments, which began in 2006 and will proceed until 2010. Based on this comparative analysis, we suggest alternatives to the nationwide survey of natural environments that are suited to Korea. Given the focus on species abundances and distributions in previous nationwide surveys in Korea, surveys of habitats, ecosystems, and ecoregions are required to more effectively protect biological resources in Korea. Furthermore, their spatial distributions should be mapped using periodical satellite images and aerial photographs. In particular, satellite images can be used to survey species, habitats, and ecosystems. Natural resources monitoring and management specialists are needed to collect various data and improve survey results. The participation of community volunteers is also important to develop an awareness in local residents of natural environment conservation. Independent survey institute (i.e., a 'National Ecosystem Institute') should be established to develop a database and survey scheme for species, habitats, and ecosystems throughout Korea. Moreover, the survey institute could develop natural environmental policy through the data analysis to meet the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity. The establishment of a survey institute will allow the completion of a natural environment survey that considers various factors, including physical habitat conditions. This will allow us to detect subtle changes in species abundance and spatial distributions and provide accurate and timely information on natural environments.

Damyang Wetland Reserve with $980,575m^2$ area is located in Damyang-gun, Jeonlanam-do and Buk-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City. The purpose of this paper is to divide Damyang riverine wetland into several geomorphic units, to analyze their sediments, and to categorize small ecosystem units composing riverine wetland. Riverine wetlands are classified into three types such as riverbed-, floodplain-, and abandoned-channel-wetland, and Damyang riverine wetland belongs to riverbed-wetland type. In this paper to categorize small geomorphic units of riverine wetland, we divide small geomorphic units from aircraft images analysis, and modify and supplement them following field survey results. Damyang Wetland Reserve is categorized into 22 ecosystem units. That physical and chemical properties of their sediments are different spatially, implicate that inorganic environment of Damyang riverine wetland ecosystem is very extensive. On the basis of the results of this study, policymakers will be able to design a strategy which manage Damyang Riverine Wetland Reserve more effectively, and for them interdisciplinary researches on relationships between various fluvial landforms and various lifeforms inhabiting them in Damyang Riverine Wetland Reserve are required.
In the Korea Strait total of 96 copepod taxa (40 genera) were identified from the seasonal and vertically stratified samples. Species richness was the highest in fall and the abundance was the highest in spring. Spatial differences were not significant within each season, but was meaningful among seasons. The water column layers of high abundances were near bottom in spring, and surface in summer and fall. Species association of copepods was examined by the cluster analysis. There are the two different results on the timing of the intrusion of East Sea Cold Water to the Korea Strait in the deeper layer based on physical data [in winter (Lee et al., 1938) vs in summer (Cho and Kim (1998)]. This study based on the distributional characteristics of copepods supported Cho and Kim (1998)'s result. Although sea water temperatures was one of major controlling factors of the copepod distribution in this strait, biological interrelation among the species such as common or exclusive exploitation of the habitat was also responsible for the observed distributional patterns.

Developments in the understanding of fire behaviour for large open-plan spaces typical of tall buildings have been greatly outpaced by the rate at which these buildings are being constructed and their characteristics changed. Numerous high-profile fire-induced failures have highlighted the inadequacy of existing tools and standards for fire engineering when applied to highly-optimised modern tall buildings. With the continued increase in height and complexity of tall buildings, the risk to the occupants from fire-induced structural collapse increases, thus understanding the performance of complex structural systems under fire exposure is imperative. Therefore, an accurate representation of the design fire for open-plan compartments is required for the purposes of design. This will allow for knowledge-driven, quantifiable factors of safety to be used in the design of highly optimised modern tall buildings. In this paper, we review the state-of-the-art experimental research on large open-plan compartment fires from the past three decades. We have assimilated results collected from 37 large-scale compartment fire experiments of the open-plan type conducted from 1993 to 2019, covering a range of compartment and fuel characteristics. Spatial and temporal distributions of the heat fluxes imposed on compartment ceilings are estimated from the data. The complexity of the compartment fire dynamics is highlighted by the large differences in the data collected, which currently complicates the development of engineering tools based on physical models. Despite the large variability, this analysis shows that the orders of magnitude of the thermal exposure are defined by the ratio of flame spread and burnout front velocities (VS / VBO), which enables the grouping of open-plan compartment fires into three distinct modes of fire spread. Each mode is found to exhibit a characteristic order of magnitude and temporal distribution of thermal exposure. The results show that the magnitude of the thermal exposure for each mode are not consistent with existing performance-based design models, nevertheless, our analysis offers a new pathway for defining thermal exposure from realistic fire scenarios in large open-plan compartments.
