  • In this paper, We designed the electronic ballast power factor corrected(PFC) circuity for an 400[W] hight pressure soldium lamp using boost-converter. The values of PFC elements in the proposed boost-converter circuit are calculated theoretically and performed simulation using IsSPICE. We also implemented the ballast for high pressure sodium lamp and experiments. We found that the experimental characteristics of implemented PFC circuit were same with those of simulation results. The experimental results show the performance as PF 90.3[%] at output 400(W).

  • This study proposes a single-stage light-emitting diode (LED) tube lamp driver with input-current shaping for T8/T10-type fluorescent lamp replacements. The proposed AC-DC LED driver integrates a dual-boost converter with coupled inductors and a half-bridge series-resonant converter with a bridge rectifier into a single-stage power conversion topology. This paper presents the operational principles and design considerations for one T8-type 18 W-rated LED tube lamp with line input voltages ranging from 100 V rms to 120 V rms. Experimental results for the prototype driver show that the highest power factor (PF = 0.988), lowest input current total harmonic distortion (THD = 7.22%), and highest circuit efficiency (η = 92.42%) are obtained at an input voltage of 120 V. Hence, the proposed driver is feasible for use in energy-efficient indoor lighting applications.

  • This paper presents the design of acoustic resonance free and over current limit during transient state consideration electronic ballast for 1.5kW Metal-Halide Lamp(MHL) that employs frequency modulation (FM) technique. The proposed ballast consists of a Full-Bridge(FB) rectifier, a passive power factor correction (PFC) circuit, a full-bridge inverter, an ignitor using LC resonance and a control circuit for frequency modulation. The frequency modulation technique is the most effective solution to eliminate acoustic resonance among other technique. It spreads power spectrum of lamp to reduce the supplied power spectrum under the energy level of eigen-value frequency. Moreover, the proposed ballast is simple and cost effective above conventional ballast. A new PFC circuit is proposed which combines with LCD type and PCSR filter. A new PFC circuit has higher PF and lower THD than conventional LCD type and secure high reliability. Finally, to protected switching components in transient state, the surge current into ballast is limited by increase the switching frequency. Performance of the proposed ballast was validated through computer simulation using Pspice, experimentation and by applying it to an electronic ballast for a prototype 1.5kW MHL.

  • In this research, we produced polycrystalline n-type $Bi_2Te_{2.7}Se_{0.3}$ powder using water atomization. To obtain full benefit through water atomized powder, we have implemented spark plasma sintering and hot extrusion for powder compaction. The microstructure and thermoelectric properties were investigated and compared. The average grain size of SPS and extruded bulks were 3.08 and $3.86{\mu}m$ respectively. The extruded material microstructure contains layered grains with less grain boundaries and its counter-part SPS displays dense packed grains with high grain boundaries. Among both bulks, extrusion sample exhibited high power factor (PF) of $2.96{\times}10^{-3}Wm^{-1}K^{-2}$ which is 38% higher than SPS ($2.14{\times}10^{-3}$) bulk sample. Due to variations in grain size and grain boundaries, the SPS bulk shows low thermal conductivity than extruded bulk. However, the extruded bulk sample exhibited a peak ZT of 0.69 at 400 K, which is 19% higher than SPS bulk sample, due to its higher power factor.

  • Resonant-type electronic ballast for a metal halide discharge(MHD) lamp is proposed and implemented for 400W MHD lamp. HID lamps have good color rendition, long life and good focusing capability but they have flickers by acoustic resonance when driven at high frequency. A new control method is employed to remove acoustic resonance related instability in HID lamp. By using the amplitude modulation, a spread spectrum effect is employed on the ballast. The control loop of resonant inverter is analyzed and a current is designed. The ballast consists of a power factor controller, an half-bridge resonant inverter, a simple ignitor and an integrator with OP-amps. The experimental results show the good performance as PF 0.93, ballast loss 22W at output 400W and the conducted EMI level is below 60dBuV.

  • There are many kinds of electronic ballast for various kinks of fluorescent lamps. The PFC(Power Factor Correction) circuit in electronic ballast is classified in two types. One is the active PFC and the other is the passive PFC circuit. The active type PFC is higher than the passive type, but the cost of the passive type is cheaper than the active type. In this study, we introduced the modified passive PFC method which is called semi-boost PFC, and then we analyzed and experimented the electronic ballast which is composed of the semi-boost PFC, half-bridge, and LCC resonant tank. Experimental results showed that the $$PF{\geq_-}0.98$$, $$CF{\leq_-}1.4$$ and input current $THD{\approx}15%$.

  • Recently, there has been increasing demand for power quality in power supply devices. The IEC 61000-3-2 standard requires that the AC / DC power supply for lighting meet the specifications for the power factor (PF) and total waveform distortion (THD). In addition, advanced countries in Europe are regulating the ripple rate as 15 ~ 30% for the flicker phenomenon caused by the change in the amount of foot energy due to the change in current of the output terminal. Therefore, domestic standards and regulations are being updated. This study adopted the Flyback converter to satisfy the PFC standard, and has the circuit first and second insulation function. To reduce the low frequency ripple of the LED current, Flyback, Coupled Inductor, LC parallel resonance filter, LLC resonance filter, and Cuk were simulated by PSIM to mimic each LED driving circuit. A coupled LC resonant circuit with a coupled inductor on the primary side and LC resonance on the secondary side was also proposed for output side ripple reduction.
