The Korean national curriculum for secondary school emphasizes scientific problem solving. In line with the national curriculum, many educational studies have been conducted in relation to science education. The objects of these studies were well-defined and well-structured problems. The studies were criticized for overlooking ill-defined and ill-structured problems. Some research has dealt with problem finding in ill-structured problems, which is related to creativity. There is a need for a study of scientific problem finding process in an ill-structured problem situation, because this study will help teachers wanting to teach scientific problem-finding in an ill-structured problem situation. The objective of this study was to conduct an empirical study on the scientific problem finding process in an ill-structured problem situation. One task of scientific problem finding in an ill-structured problem situation was assigned to 92 university students; thereafter, 32 of them participated in the research through interviews. Results indicated that the scientific problem finding process depended on initial clues and tentative solutions. Initial clues were affected by students' experiences, such as major classes, films, and novels. Tentative solutions were influenced by background knowledge of the tasks. Students screened information browsed on the Internet. They applied some standards for selection, particularly emphasized reliability standards, which are supposed to be studied in other contexts. All the students used assumptions to make their problems appear probable, which could be a useful tool to articulate.

Background: Hazardous health behaviour in young people is an important factor that affects the individual risk for non-communicable diseases and other disorders later in life. This study aimed to determine the hazardous health behaviour of first and last class medical students of Erciyes University. Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was carried out with 240 medical students from the first and 130 students from the last (sixth) class. Data were obtained by questionnaire between March-April 2012. In total, 339 students were included with a response rate of 91.6%. Socio-demographic characteristics, school success, self-reported economic difficulties, health perceptions, hazardous health behaviour related to chronic disease, tobacco, alcohol, substance use, body weight, height, traffic, violence and nutrition were assessed in line with the literature. Results: Of the participants; 64.0% were from first and 36.0% were from the last class. Mean ages for the first and last classes were $19.4{\pm}1.5$ and $24.0{\pm}1.5years$, respectively. In the current study, males exhibited more hazardous behaviour than females. Sime 19.8% of the students in the study group used alcohol, 35.4% used a waterpipe, and 24.8% used tobacco at least once. These rates increased in both genders in the last class and the increase in males was significant. Some 3.8% of the students in the current study used pleasure-inducing illegal substances at least once. All the students participating in the current study were single, the number of males reported not using condoms (8.6%) was 4.56 times higher compared to females. Some 64.0% of the students did not perform physical activity lasting at least 30 minutes for five times a week, 13.0% did not sleep for mean 7-8 hours daily, males having a 2.9 times higher risk. More than 1/3 of the students did not consume cooked vegetable dishes and 1/4 did not consume fresh fruits and salads, the rates were higher among males. Conclusions: In the current study, hazardous health behaviour was prevalent among medical students, with higher risks among males and last class students. According to these results, medical curriculum may be focused on decreasing hazardous health behaviour. This study examined the moral judgments and ethical decision-making and analyzed ethical dilemmas experienced in practice by nursing students. The data were collected using self-reported questionnaires and reports from 189 college students in their 2nd ~ 4th grades. Data collection period was from Nov 6th - 20th in 2012. Each grade's P(%) scores were 47.92, 43.74, and 43.75 respectively.. For stage 4 score, each grade's scores were 22.37, 22.98, and 19.74. This result shows that, compared to juniors, senior student's P(%) scores did not drop and stage 4 scores rather decreased, which is in line with the results of previous studies about the effects of ethics education. This finding could be attributed to the regular and voluntary case presentations and discussions required for the senior participants. Regarding ethical decision-making type, the most favored was type 3(35.45%). Among seven categories of the ethical dilemmas facing the students, the most commonly reported was the patient's rights and dignity, followed by practices based on nursing standards, arranging for dying patients. This study raises the need that the curriculum is revised to encourage student's participation in the analysis of ethical issues they confront in the field.
The purpose of this study was to identify and compare the mathematics educational values of pre-service and in-service elementary school teachers. For this purpose, we implemented a questionnaire investigating mathematics educational values and used principal component analysis which resulted in six components. These components were named as fun, problem-solving, representation, computation, ability, and explanation through systematic labeling processes. Both pre-service and in-service elementary school teachers considered problem-solving the most important and there was no statistical difference between the teacher groups. They also considered fun the least important and in-service elementary school teachers regarded it more important than pre-service counterparts did. All value components except explanation were regarded as important by in-service elementary school teachers, fourth-year pre-service teachers, and first-year pre-service teachers in order. The result of noticeable differences between pre-service and in-service elementary school teachers implies that actual teaching experience may affect teachers' mathematics educational values more than teacher preparation programs. Based on these findings, we need to discuss what should be regarded as important and worthwhile in teacher preparation programs to establish mathematics educational values for pre-service teachers. We also need to confirm whether the mathematics educational values by in-service elementary school teachers may be in line with what has been pursued in the national mathematics curriculum.
