  • Purpose: This study is to assess the level of student perceptions, academic achievement, satisfaction, and their relationships in a medical-surgical nursing course using team-based learning (TBL). Method: Four-hour TBL sessions were given in a structured three-phase sequence in a cohort of 261 second year nursing students. Results: Mean perceptions of TBL was $6.64{\pm}5.11$, and $8.30{\pm}4.11$ for perceptions of teamwork. On a 7-point scale, the mean satisfaction score was $4.85{\pm}1.41$, and 64.0% of nursing students were satisfied with TBL compared to lecture. Group readiness assurance test score was significantly higher than individual readiness assurance test score (t=-16.76, p<.001). Perceptions of TBL (F=1.40, p=.245), perceptions of team work (F=1.55, p=.202) and satisfaction (F=0.81, p=.489) was not different by the level of students' academic achievement on items related TBL. Conclusion: Results indicates that TBL was an effective instructional strategy including favorable perceptions and satisfaction for nursing students. TBL could be an adjunct educational strategy for undergraduate nursing education.

The subjects of this study were 85 nursing students trained by the preceptors in the G. medical college hospital in Inchon, and 122 nursing students trained by head nurses at several hospitals in Inchon and Puchon, Korea. The scale for measuring the teaching effectiveness and satisfaction of student for clinical practice developed by Kim, Miae and Lee, Sookja were employed as the tool for the study. The data collected were analysed with SPSS on the teaching effectiveness items, then mean value and SD were evaluated. The t-test were also employed to compare the teaching effectiveness and satisfaction of student for clinical practice of the both groups. The relation of teaching effectives and satisfaction of student for clinical practice were analysed with Pearson's correlation coefficient. The following findings were carried out from this study. 1) The group trained by preceptors showed significant higher teaching effectiveness statistically than the group trained by head nurses, scored mean value of 3.46 and 3.04 respectively in the item of teaching effectiveness. 2) The respective item showing high score of teaching effectiveness in both groups was 'smooth and reasonable dealing on the issues occurred in the wards'. But the items of 'help nursing students to familiarize with other staffs quickly'and 'help always at near' showed low scores. 3) For 5 causal factors classified on the teaching effectiveness, the factor of 'professional knowledge and capability' got the highest score, but 'availability as a supporter' showed the lowest score in both groups. 4) The group trained by preceptors showed significant higher students' satisfaction of clinical practice than the group trained by head nurses, scored mean value of 3.54 and 3.17. 5) Total teaching effectives were posive correlation with students' satisfaction of clinical practice significantly (r=0.603)

Method: The Q-methodology, which provides a method of analyzing the subjectivity of each item, was used. The 34 selected Q-statements from each of 41 subjects were classified into a shape of normal distribution using a 9 point scale. The collected data was analyzed using a QUANL PC program. Result: Four types of perception of happiness in Korean undergraduate nursing students were identified. Type I is a family support vs. emotion type, Type II is a self satisfaction vs. perception type, Type III is a relation oriented vs. action type, and Type IV is a self regulation vs. belief type. Conclusion: It can be concluded that obtaining happiness by pursuing a satisfactory life through creation of values can play an important role in happiness. Therefore, the results of this study suggest that the concept of happiness might be included in nursing curriculum.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the correlations between transitional shock, incivility and nursing professionalism among nursing students. Methods: A total of 143 nursing students completed transitional shock, incivility and nursing professionalism, using structured questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed using the t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. Results: The results showed that nursing professionalism was significantly correlated with gender (β=.20, p=.001), major satisfaction (β=.44, p=.007), clinical practice satisfaction (β=.45, p<.001), transitional shock (β=-.20, p=.012), and incivility experienced (β=-.18, p=.021) among nursing students. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop a plan for reducing individual satisfaction with clinical practice and the transitional shock of nursing students. It ultimately may increase nursing students' nursing professionalism. In addition, a strategy is needed to reduce incivility among nursing students by creating positive educational environment in clinical practice through cooperation between schools and training institutions, and to strengthen desirable nursing professionalism.

  • This descriptive study was conducted to examine the factors affecting core competency, learner motivation, and learner satisfaction of nursing students and to develop effective teaching methods. The subjects of this study were 134 nursing students. The core competencies of nursing students were higher in 3rd grade than in 2nd grade, and the core competency, motivation, and learner satisfaction of the nursing students were higher than those of below average students. The explanatory power of a core competency model constructed using the self-directed learning readiness, teacher-student interaction, and academic achievement was 45.1%. Additionally, the explanatory power of a learner motivation model based on self-directed learning readiness, teacher-student interaction, academic achievement, and learner motivation was 47.5%, while that of a learner satisfaction model constructed using the teacher-student interaction and learner motivation was 43.4%. In conclusion, it is necessary to improve teacher-student interaction and self-directed learning readiness to increase core competency and learner motivation. To increase learner satisfaction, it is necessary to intervene to encourage learner motivation and to make the teaching-student interaction efficient.
