  • The Newton-Raphson's algorithm for finding a floating point reciprocal and inverse square root calculates the result by performing a fixed number of multiplications. In this paper, an improved Newton-Raphson's algorithm is proposed, that performs multiplications a variable number. Since the number of multiplications performed by the proposed algorithm is dependent on the input values, the average number of multiplications per an operation is derived from many reciprocal and inverse square tables with varying sizes. The superiority of this algorithm is proved by comparing this average number with the fixed number of multiplications of the conventional algorithm. Since the proposed algorithm only performs the multiplications until the error gets smaller than a given value, it can be used to improve the performance of a reciprocal and inverse square root unit. Also, it can be used to construct optimized approximate tables. The results of this paper can be applied to many areas that utilize floating point numbers, such as digital signal processing, computer graphics, multimedia, scientific computing, etc.

  • This paper presents a study of the elastohydrodynamic lubrication of elliptical contacts where lubricant entrainment coincides with the major axis of the Hertzian contact ellipse. A finite difference method and the Newton-Raphson method are applied to analyze the problem. Film contours and pressure distributions are compared with the results for lubricant entrainment coincides with the minor axis. Variations of the minimum and central film thicknesses with the radius ratio are also examined. Therefore, the present numerical scheme can be used generally in the analysis of the EHL of elliptical contacts where the lubricant entraining vector did not coincide with either of the principal axis of the conjunction.

  • A 1/3 composite cylindrical shell with a central rectangular opening was axially compressed experimentally, and its critical buckling load and displacement, and strains were measured. A finite element model (FEM) of the shell with Hashin failure criteria was established to analyze its buckling and post-buckling behaviors by nonlinear Newton-Raphson method. The geometric imperfection sensitivity and the effect of side supported conditions of the shell were investigated. It was found that the Newton-Raphson method can be used to analyze the buckling and post-buckling behaviors of the shell. The shell is not sensitive to initial geometric imperfection. And the support design of the shell by side stiffeners is a good way to obtain the critical buckling load and simplify the experimental fixture.

  • Modern graphic processors, multimedia processors and audio processors mostly use floating-point number. High-level language such as C and Java use both single precision and double precision floating-point number. In this paper, an algorithm which computes the reciprocal of double precision floating-point number using a 32 bit multiplier is proposed. It divides the mantissa of double precision floating-point number to upper part and lower part, and calculates the reciprocal of the upper part with Newton-Raphson algorithm. And it computes the reciprocal of double precision floating-point number with calculated upper part reciprocal as the initial value. Since the number of multiplications performed by the proposed algorithm is dependent on the mantissa of floating-point number, the average number of multiplications per an operation is derived from some reciprocal tables with varying sizes.

  • This paper represents the first comprehensive comparison of the Newton-Raphson's method and Simple Iterative Procedure (SIP) in the maximum likelihood estimation of the two-parameter Weibull distribution. Computer simulation is employed to compare these two methods for multiply censored, singly censored data (Type I or Type Ⅱ censoring) and complete data. Results indicate the Newton-Raphson's with the Menon's estimated value, as an initial point remains the effective iterative procedure for estimating the parameters.

  • We have developed an efficient and robust image reconstruction algorithm for static impedance imaging. This improved Newton-Raphson method produced more accurate images by reducing the undesirable effects of the ill-conditioned Hessian matrix. We found that our electrical impedance tomography (EIT) system could produce two-dimensional static images from a physical phantom with 7% spatial resolution at the center and 5% at the periphery. Static EIT image reconstruction requires a large amount of computation. In order to overcome the limitations on reducing the computation time by algorithmic approaches, we implemented the improved Newton-Raphson algorithm on a parallel computer system and showed that the parallel computation could reduce the computation time from hours to minutes.

  • In this work, a finite element model is presented for geometrically non-linear analysis of shell structures. Finite element by using a three-node flat triangular shell element is formulated. The non-linear incremental equilibrium equations are formulated by using an updated Lagrangian formulation and the solutions are obtained with the incremental/iterative Newton-Raphson method and arc length method. Some of results are presented for shell structures. The obtained results are in good agreement with the results available in existing literature.

  • A theoretical study of elastohydrodynamic lubrication of elliptical contacts with both rolling and spin has been carried out. A finite difference method and the Newton-Raphson method are applied to solve the problem. The velocity vectors resulting from combined spin and rolling/sliding motion lead to asymmetric pressure distributions and film shapes. Film contours and variations of the minimum and central film thicknesses are compared with various spin-roll ratios. At high spin-roll ratios the minimum film thickness is considerably reduced, whereas the central film thickness decreases less dramatically, The present numerical scheme can be used in the analysis of general elliptical contact problems.

  • Hydrodynamic performance of a movable submerged breakwater was analyzed using energy dissipation model. Based on two-dimensional boundary element method the equation of motion including a viscous dissipation term proportional to velocity squared was solved by Newton-Raphson method. Energy dissipation coefficients as well as reflection and transmission coefficients of a submerged flat plate were calculated with various plate lengths and thickness. Both real and imaginary components of body displacement and forces were used to solve the motion of breakwater accurately. The effect of the magnitude of dissipation coefficient on the body displacement was evaluated. The results from the potential theory with no dissipation term were found to be an overestimate in resonance frequency.
