  • This paper presents a new nonlinear analysis algorithm, that is, adaptive Newton-Raphson iteration method, The presented algorithm is based on the existing Newton-Raphson method, and the concept of it can be summarized as calculating the equivalent load for stiffness(ELS) and adapting this to the initial global stiffness matrix which has already been calculated and saved in initial analysis and finally calculating the correction displacements for the nonlinear analysis, The key characteristics of the proposed algorithm is that it calculates the inverse matrix of the global stiffness matrix only once irresponsive of the number of load steps. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm depends on the ratio of the active Dofs - the Dofs which are directly connected to the members of which the element stiffness are changed - to the total Dofs, and based on this ratio by using the proposed algorithm as a complementary method to the existing algorithm the efficiency of the nonlinear analysis can be improved dramatically.

  • The 6-DOF parallel manipulator is a closed-kindmatic chain robot manipulator that is capable of providing high structural rigidity and positional accuracy. Because of its advantage, the parallel manipulator have been widely used in many engineering applications such as vehicle/flight driving simulators, rogot maniplators, attachment tool of machining centers, etc. However, the kinematic analysis for the implementation of a real-time controller has some problem because of the lack of an efficient lagorithm for solving its highly nonliner forward kinematic equation, which provides the translational and orientational attitudes of the moveable upper platform from the lenght of manipulator linkages. Generally, Newton-Raphson method has been widely sued to solve the forward kinematic problem but the effectiveness of this methodology depend on how to set initial values. This paper proposes a hybrid method using genetic algorithm(GA) and Newton-Raphson method to solve forward kinematics. That is, the initial values of forward kinematics solution are determined by adopting genetic algorithm which can search grobally optimal solutions. Since determining this values, the determined values are used in Newton-Raphson method for real time calcuation.

  • For the design of various structures, the dynamic analysis of the structures is essential. Eigenproblem must be first computed when the mode superposition method is used in the dynamic analysis of the structures. However, since most of solution time is spent on calculating the eigenpairs of the system, the development of more efficient solution method is required. The purpose of this paper is to present the efficient solution method that combines the Robinson-Lee's method and accelerated Newton-Raphson method to improve numerical stability and increase convergence. Effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through numerical examples.

  • This paper established the dynamic model of a flexible Timoshenko beam capable of geometrical nonlinearities subject to large overall motions by using the finite element method. Equations of motion are derived by using Hamilton principle and are formulated in terms of finite elements in which the nonlinear constraint equations are adjoined to the system using Lagrange multipliers. The Newmark direct integration method and the Newton-Raphson iteration are employed here for the numerical study which is to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed formulation.

  • In EIT(electrical impedance tomography), the internal resistivity(or conductivity) distribution of the unknown object is estimated using the boundary voltage data induced by different current patterns using various reconstruction algorithms. In this paper, we present a regularized modified Newton-Raphson(mNR) scheme which employs additional a priori information in the cost functional as soft constraint and the weighting matrices in the cost functional are selected based on the exponentially weighted least square criterion. The computer simulation for the 32 channels synthetic data shows that the reconstruction performance of the proposed scheme is improved compared to that of the conventional regularized mNR at the expense of slightly increased computational burden.

  • The modified arc-length algorithms for the automatic incremental solution of nonlinear finite element equations proposed by Riks are presented, which comprise the cylindrical arc-length method and the normal arc-length method. These methods are developed to trace the nonlinear path of large displacement problems such as a pre and post bucking/collapse response of general structures. These methods are applied to analyse the nonlinear behavior of arch and shell problems in parallel with the standard and modified Newton-Raphson method.

  • In this study, a usefulness of the iterative solution procedures is reviewed for the elasto-plastic large deflection analysis of imperfect plates by finite element method. Three typical solution techniques such as simple incremental(SI) method, Newton-Raphson(NR) method and modified Newton-Raphson (mNR) method are compared. It is concluded that for thin plates which are given rise to the large deflection, iteration for the convergence of the unbalance force should be performed and in this case mNR method is more useful than NR method since the computing time of the former becomes to be a half of the latter, in which the accuracy of the result remains same. For thick plates or thin plates with large initial deflection, however, the use of SI method is quite better since the unbalance force may be negligible.

  • The particular integral formulation for two(2D) and three(3D) dimensional inelastic transient dynamic stress analysis is presented. The elastostatic equation is used for the complementary solution. Using the concept of global shape function, the particular integrals for displacement and traction rates are obtained to approximate acceleration of the inhomogeneous equation. The Houbolt time integration scheme is used for the time-marching process. The Newton-Raphson algorithm for plastic multiplier is used to solve the system equation. Numerical results of four example problems are given to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the present formulation.

  • Load Flow calculation methods can usually be divided into Gauss-Seidel method, Newton-Raphson method and decoupled method. Load flow calculation is a basic on-line or off-line process for power system planning, operation, control and state analysis. These days Newton-Raphson method is mainly used since it shows remarkable convergence characteristics. It, however, needs considerable calculation time in construction and calculation of inverse Jacobian matrix. In addition to that, Newton-Raphson method tends to fail to converge when system loading is heavy and system has a large R/X ratio. In this paper, matrix equation is used to make algebraic expression and then to solve load flow equation and to modify above defects. And it preserve certain part of Jacobian matrix to shorten the time of calculation. Application of mentioned algorithm to 14 bus, 39 bus, 118 bus systems led to identical result and the number of iteration got by Newton-Raphson method. The effect of time reduction showed about 28%, 30%, at each case of 39 bus, 118 bus system.

  • A solution method is presented to solve the eigenvalue problem arising in the dynamic analysis of nonclassicary damped structural systems with multiple eigenvalues. The proposed method is obtained by applying the modified Newton-Raphson technique and the orthonormal condition of the eigenvectors to the linear eigenproblem through matrix augmentation of the quadratic eigenvalue problem. In the iteration methods such as the inverse iteration method and the subspace iteration method, singularity may be occurred during the factorizing process when the shift value is close to an eigenvalue of the system. However, even though the shift value is an eigenvalue of the system, the proposed method provides nonsingularity, and that is analytically proved. Since the modified Newton-Raphson technique is adopted to the proposed method, initial values are need. Because the Lanczos method effectively produces better initial values than other methods, the results of the Lanczos method are taken as the initial values of the proposed method. Two numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and the results are compared with those of the well-known subspace iteration method and the Lanczos method.
