Application of Bacterial Foraging Algorithm and Genetic Algorithm for Selective Voltage Harmonic Elimination in PWM Inverter

  • Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) techniques are increasingly employed for PWM inverter fed induction motor drive. Among various popular PWM methods used, Selective Harmonic Elimination PWM (SHEPWM) has been widely accepted for its better harmonic elimination capability. In addition, using SHEPWM, it is also possible to maintain better voltage regulation. Hence, in this paper, an attempt has been made to apply Bacterial Foraging Algorithm (BFA) for solving selective harmonic elimination problem. The problem of voltage harmonic elimination together with output voltage regulation is drafted as an optimization task and the solution is sought through proposed method. For performance comparison of BFA, the results obtained are compared with other techniques such as derivative based Newton-Raphson method, and Genetic Algorithm. From the comparison, it can be observed that BFA based approach yields better results. Further, it provides superior convergence, reduced computational burden, and guaranteed global optima. The simulation results are validated through experimental findings.

A study on the modeling of a hexacopter

  • The purpose of this paper is to present the basic mathematical modeling of a hexacopter, which could be used to develop proper methods for stabilization and trajectory control. A hexacopter consists of six rotors with three pairs of counter-rotating fixed-pitch blades. This mechanism is an under-actuated, dynamically unstable, six-degrees-of-freedom system. The whole motion of this object consists of translational and rotational motion in three dimensions, where the translational motion is created by changing the direction and magnitude of the upward propeller thrust. The hexacopter is controlled by adjusting the angular velocities of the rotors, which are spun by electric motors. It is assumed to be a rigid body; thus, the differential equation of the hexacopter dynamics can be derived from the Newton-Euler equation. The Euler-angle parametrization of the three-dimensional rotations contains singular points in the coordinate space that can cause failure of both the dynamical model and control. In order to avoid singularities, the rotations of the hexacopter are parametrized in terms of quaternions. This choice has been made considering the linearity of the quaternion formulation and their stability and efficiency. Further, control simulation of a hexacopter applying cascaded-PID control is also presented in this paper.

Development of AC/DC Hybrid Simulation for Operator Training Simulator in Railway System

  • Operator training simulator, within a training environment designed to understand the principles and behavior of the railway system with respect to operator's entries and predefined scenario, can provide a very strong benefit in facilitating operators' handling undesired operations. This simulator consists of computer system and applications, and the purpose of applications is to generate the power and voltage and analyze the AC substation and DC railway, respectively. This paper describes a novel approach to the new techniques for AC/DC hybrid simulation for the operator training simulator in the railway system. We first propose the structure the database of railway system. Then, topology processing and power flow using a linked-list method based on the proposed database, full or decoupled newton-rapshon methods are presented. Finally, the interface between the analysis for AC substation using a newton-rapshon method and the analysis for DC railway system using a time-interval power flow method is described. We have verified and tested the developed algorithm through the extensive testing for the proposed test system. To demonstrate the validity of the developed algorithm, comparative simulations between the proposed algorithm and PSS/E for the test system were conducted.

  • We show the mixed finite element method which induces solutions that has the same order of errors for both the gradient of the solution and the solution itself. The technique to construct an efficient reusable matrix is suggested. Two families of mixed finite element methods are introduced with an automatic generating technique for matrix with my order of basis. The generated matrix by this technique has more accurate values and is a sparse matrix. This new technique is applied to solve a minimal surface problem.

  • This paper presents new methods to resolve the important limits in the decoupled UPFC model for power flow, by which conventional power flow program can be performed with addition of two buses per one UPFC. In order to operate UPFC to the desired value, the series voltage and shunt current of UPFC should be computed. So a method of calculating these by simple equations after power flow is derived. However, the calculated magnitude of series voltage and/or shunt current of UPFC may not be allowed because of the UPFC limit \ulcorner to the ratings of inverters. In this case, the active power and the reactive power (or the voltage magnitude) of UPFC buses should be revised to resolve the limit. This paper proposes the Newton Raphson method to resolve these limits. Particularly, when resolving the series voltage magnitude, three strategies are proposed according to the priority of the active power and the reactive power (or the voltage magnitude).

  • In the digital information age, image processing is essential for various digital devices such as smart phones, cameras, and TVs. However, degradation occurs in analyzing, recognizing, and processing image data, and salt & pepper noise occurs. Therefore, in this paper, we applied linear interpolation method, newton interpolation method, lagrange interpolation method, and spline interpolation method to the image damaged by salt & pepper noise in order to find more effective interpolation method in salt & pepper noise environment, The methods were compared using the PSNR (peak signal to noise ratio).

  • The lens distortions were corrected directly using the high-order polynomial which was offered in camera calibration data for the forward transformation and the root of Newton-Raphson's $2\times{2}$ nonlinear system for the backward transformation. The 0.04~0.08 pixels increase in accuracy was indicated through the use of direct correction of lens distortions instead of least square methods of commercial software. The least square adjustment method of high-order polynomial requires many control points which has a same weight. But this suggested method which is unnecessary to determine control points was developed and applied. The algorithm showed improved efficacy.

Comparison of Parameter Estimation Methods in A Kappa Distribution

  • This paper deals with the comparison of parameter estimation methods in a 3-parameter Kappa distribution which is sometimes used in flood frequency analysis. Method of moment estimation(MME), L-moment estimation(L-ME), and maximum likelihood estimation(MLE) are applied to estimate three parameters. The performance of these methods are compared by Monte-carlo simulations. Especially for computing MME and L-ME, three dimensional nonlinear equations are simplified to one dimensional equation which is calculated by the Newton-Raphson iteration under constraint. Based on the criterion of the mean squared error, L-ME (or MME) is recommended to use for small sample size( n$\le$100) while MLE is good for large sample size.

  • We investigate the estimation of the moisture transfer coefficients in porous media by optimization technique which minimizes the functional defined by the squares error of the numerical solution of an inverse diffusion problem from their experimental values of the moisture content at the some time-steps. In this paper, we solve a diffusion equation numerically by the control volume finite element methods.

Fuzzy-Enforced Complementarity Constraints in Nonlinear Interior Point Method-Based Optimization

  • This paper presents a fuzzy set method to enforce complementarity constraints (CCs) in a nonlinear interior point method (NIPM)-based optimization. NIPM is a Newton-type approach to nonlinear programming problems, but it adopts log-barrier functions to deal with the obstacle of managing inequality constraints. The fuzzy-enforcement method has been implemented for CCs, which can be incorporated in optimization problems for real-world applications. In this paper, numerical simulations that apply this method to power system optimal power flow problems are included.
