  • Hydraulic vane pumps are widely used in various hydraulic systems because of its compactness and light weight. It is well known that the vanes and cam ring are separated by very thin liquid films which result in the EHL state. Contrary to the case of cylindrical roller bearings, the inlet and side boundary pressures are much higher than the atmospheric pressure. In this paper, a numerical solution of the EHL of finite line contacts between the cam ring and vane tip with profiled ends is presented. Using a finite difference method with non-uniform grids and the Newton-Raphson method, converged solutions are obtained for moderate load and material parameters. The EHL pressure distribution and film shape are considerably affected by pump delivery pressure and the side boundary condition applied. Both the maximum pressure and the minimum film thickness always occurred near the edge regions. The present results can be used in the design of optimum vane profile in hydraulic vane pump.

  • A line search algorithm to increase a convergence in Newton's method is developed and applied to nonlinear finite element analysis. The algorithm is based on the slack line search theory which is an efficient algorithm to determine initial acceleration coefficient, variable backtracking algorithm proposed by some researchers, and convergence criterion based on residual norm. Also, it is capable of avoiding exceptional diverging conditions. Developed program is tested in metal forming simulation such as forging and ring rolling. Numerical result shows the validity of the algorithm for a highly nonlinear system .

  • This paper presents an improved optimal power flow algorithm, which solves an optimization problem with equality constraints with converted inequality constraints. The standard OPF and the penalty function method should do reconstructing active constraints among the inequality constraints so that the activation of the inequality constraints has been imposing an additional burden to solve OPF problem efficiently. However the proposed algorithm converts active inequality constraints into the equality constraints in order to preclude us from reconstructing the procedures. The effectiveness of the new OPF algorithm is validated by applying the IEEE 14 bus system.

  • A numerical analysis between the piston and cylinder in hydraulic piston pumps under reciprocating motion is presented. A finite difference method and the Newton-Raphson method are used simultaneously to solve the Reynolds equation in the clearance and the equation of motion for the piston. The tapered piston showed stable behaviors regardless of their initial eccentric positions in the clearance, and the reciprocating speed affect highly on the piston end trajectories. Therefore, the numerical methods and results of present study can be used in the lubrication study of other piston-cylinder type fluid machineries.

  • In classical titrimetric analyses, the major concern is the concentration of titrant, usually the aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide, that could be changed as time goes by and it is accompanied with the inaccuracy of the resulting data. And the statistical approach, the nonlinear regression analysis, which is a well-known statistical method, was introduced to determine the accurate concentration of the titrant and the exact value of parameters, $K_a$, r, $C_a$, $C_b$, for 0.01 M aqueous solutions of analytes, sodium pyruvate, sodium acetate, sodium bicarbonate, ammonium hydroxide, ammonium chloride and acetic acid at $25^{\circ}C$. We used Gauss-Newton method for the linearlization of the nonlinear titration system and the two-parameter fitting showed appreciable convergent data for the parameters of the analytes set with the various range of $K_a$ value.

  • The use of composite hyperpatch model is proposed to predict a machine tool positional error over the entire work space. This is an appropriate representation of the distorted work space. This model is valid for any configuration of 3-axis machine tool. Tool position, which is given NC data or CL data, contains error vector in actual work space. In this study, off-line compensation scheme was investigated for tool position error due to inaccuracy in machine tool structure. The error vector in actual work space is corrected by the error model using Newton-Raphson method. The proposed error compensation method shows the possibility of improving machine accuracy at a low cost.

  • Multinomial logistic regression is probably the most popular representative of probabilistic discriminative classifiers for multiclass classification problems. In this paper, a kernel variant of multinomial logistic regression is proposed by combining a Newton's method with a bound optimization approach. This formulation allows us to apply highly efficient approximation methods that effectively overcomes conceptual and numerical problems of standard multiclass kernel classifiers. We also provide the approximate cross validation (ACV) method for choosing the hyperparameters which affect the performance of the proposed approach. Experimental results are then presented to indicate the performance of the proposed procedure.

  • A six-degree-of-freedom dynamic model with time-varying mesh stiffness/damping and friction has been developed for the dynamic analysis of a gear driving system. This model includes a spur gear pair, bearing, friction and prime mover. Using Newton???s method, equations of motion for the gear driving system were derived. Two computer programs are developed to calculate mesh stiffness, transmission error and friction force and analyze the dynamics of the modeled system using a time integration method. The influences of mesh stiffness/damping, bearing, and friction affecting the system were investigated by performing eigenvalue analysis and time response analysis. It is found that the reduction of the maximum peak magnitude by friction is decided according to designing the positions of pitch point and maximum peak in the responses.

  • This paper aims at asymptotic stabilization for uncertain dynamic systems with state and input delays. We propose a memoryless state feedback controller which maximizes the delay bound for guaranteeing stability of the system. Using Lyapunov method and linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach, a delay-dependent stabilization criterion is devised by taking the relationship between the terms in the Leibniz-Newton formula into account. The criterion is represented in terms of LMIs, which can be solved by various efficient convex optimization algorithms. Numerical examples are given to illustrate our main method.
