  • A boiling heat transfer is used in various industry such as power generation systems, heat exchangers, air-conditioning and refrigerations. In the boiling heat transfer system, the critical heat flux (CHF) is the important factor, and it indicated safety of the system. It has kept up studies on the CHF enhancement. Recently, it is reported the CHF enhancement, when working fluid used the nanofluid with excellent thermal properties. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the influence of nano particles coated surface for heat transfer enhancement in pure water, oxidized multi-wall carbon nanotube nanofluid (OMWCNT), and oxidized graphene nanofluid (OGraphene). Nanoparticles were coated for 120 sec on the surface, and we measured the CHF at the flow velocities of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 m/sec, respectively. As the results, both of the OMWCNT and OGraphene nanofluids increased up to about 34.0 and 40.0%.

  • In this study, we prepared magnesium ion containing oxide films formed on the Ti-6Al-4V using plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) treatment. Ti-6Al-4V surface was treated using PEO in Mg containing electrolytes at 270V for 5 min. The phase, composition and morphology of the Mg ion containing oxide films were evaluated with X-ray diffraction (XRD), Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) and filed-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). The biocompatibility of Mg ion containing oxide films was evaluated by immersing in simulated body fluid (SBF). According to surface properties of PEO films, the optimum condition was formed when the applied was 270 V. The PEO films formed in the condition contained the properties of porosity, anatase phase, and near 1.7 Ca(Mg)/P ratio in the oxide film. Our experimental results demonstrate that Mg ion containing oxide promotes bone like apatite nucleation and growth from SBF. The phase and morphologies of bone like apatite were influenced by the Mg ion concentration.

  • In order to reduce enormous cost of real-scale underwater explosion experiments on ships, the mechanical response of the ships have been analyzed by combining scaled-down experiments and Hopkinson's scaling law. However, the Hopkinson's scaling law is applicable only if all variables vary in an identical ratio; for example, thickness of ship, size of explosive, and distance between the explosive and the ship should vary with same ratio. Unfortunately, it is infeasible to meet such uniform scaling requirement because of environmental conditions and limitations in manufacturing scaled model systems. For the facile application of the scaling analysis, we propose a generalized scaling law that is applicable for non-uniform scaling cases in which different parts of the experiments are scaled in different ratios compared to the real-scale experiments. In order to establish such a generalized scaling law, we conducted a parametric study based on numerical simulations, and validated it with experiments and simulations. This study confirms that the initial peak value of response variables in a real-scale experiment can be predicted even when we perform a scaled experiment composed of different scaling ratios for each experimental variable.

  • A layer-by-layer coating was produced using electrophoretic deposition for a HA/Al2O3 coating layer and a bioglass coating layer on Co-Cr-Mo alloy with a roughness of 0.5 ㎛ (400 emery paper SiC). The corrosion behaviour was analyzed by assessing the coating layers' exceptional corrosion resistance, which outperformed the substrate. Cr ion release test using AAS was carried out, indicating that factional graded coating inhibited ion release from the uncoated substrate to coated sample. The porosity was expressed as a percentage, representing the extent of imperfections on the surface of all coatings. These imperfections fell within an acceptable range of 1% to 3%. The roughness of the coated surface was measured using atomic force microscopy, which revealed an excellent roughness value of 3.32 nm. Tape test technique for adhesion revealed that the removal area of the substrate coating layer varied by 11.92%. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the presence of all coating material peaks and verified phases of the deposited coating layers. These findings provided evidence that the coating composition remains unaffected by the electrophoretic deposition process. The bioactivity was assessed by immersion in a simulated bodily fluid, which revealed the formation of HCA during a period of 5 days.

  • Two surfaces that have relative motion show different characteristics according to surface roughness or surface patterns in all lubrication areas. For two rough surfaces with mixed lubrication, this paper proposes a new approach that includes the contact characteristics of the surfaces and a probabilistic method for a numerical analysis of lubrication. As the contact area of the two surfaces changes according to the loading conditions, asperity contact is very important. An average flow model developed by Patir-Cheng is central to the study of lubrication for rough surfaces. This average flow model also refers to a multi-asperity contact model for deriving a modified Reynolds equation and calculating the lubricant characteristics of a bearing surface with random roughness during fluid flow. Based on the average flow model, this paper carried out a numerical analysis of lubrication using a contact model by considering a load change made by the actual contact of asperities between two surfaces. Lubrication properties show different characteristics according to the surface patterns. This study modeled various geometric surface patterns and calculated the characteristics of lubrication.

  • Nano-sized ZnO colloids were prepared by use of spray combustion method. for combustion reaction, $Zn(NO_3)_2{\cdot}6H_2O$ and $CH_6N_4O$ were employed as an oxidizer and a fuel. Exothermic peak was shown at $230^{\circ}C$ by DTA/TGA, and it was considered as a combustion reaction followed by ignition of the precursor mixture. In case of spray combustion method, because insufficient contents of molecules and radicals generated from precursor droplets may lead an incomplete igmition, the ignition temperature of combustion chamber was chosen at $500^{\circ}C$. For diminishing aerosol coagulation, the droplet number concentration was reduced by filter media. The fluid was laminar with 2.5 seconds of aerosol residence time. The synthesized colloids had spherical shape with 180 nanometer size, and the crystalline phase was ZnO with hexagonal structure.

  • This paper presents the technology for the design, fabrication, and characterization of a microfluidic system interface (MSI); the purpose of this technology is to enable the integration of complex microfluidic systems. The MSI technology can be applied in a simple manner for realizing complex arrangements of microfluidic interconnects, integrated microvalves for fluid control, and optical windows for on-chip optical processes. A microfluidic system for the preparation of genetic samples was used as the test vehicle to prove the effectiveness of the MSI technology for packaging complex microfluidic systems with multiple functionalities. The miniaturized genetic sample preparation system comprised several functional compartments, including compartments for cell purification, cell separation, cell lysis, solid-phase DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction, and capillary electrophoresis. Additionally, the functional operation of the solid-phase extraction and PCR thermocycling compartments was demonstrated by using the MSI.

  • In this study, the rheological properties of nitromethane gel propellants on nano/micron sized gelling agent are investigated. Silicon dioxide is used as the gellant with 5 wt%, 6.5 wt% and 8 wt% concentration, respectively, where the measurements are conducted under steady-state shear flow conditions using a rotational rheometer. The nitromethane/silicon dioxide gel showed non-Newtonian flow behavior for the entire experimental shear rate ranges. The gel fuels with nano-sized gellant had a slightly higher viscosity than the gel fuels with micron-sized one for low shear rate range. Additionally, it was found that Herschel-Bulkley model can hardly describe the rheological behavior of nitromethane gel propellant, but the NM model(by Teipel and Forter-Barth) is better suited to explain the rheological behavior of nitromethane gel propellant.

  • From 2016, controls on reduction of NOx and SOx emissions from the vessels that are operated in the emission control area were tightened. The selectivity catalytic reduction system of the denitrification equipment which NOx among the above controlled materials is very effective and used commercially very much. But it has the disadvantage that CSR is activated at high temperatures. Therefore, the SCR and SCR activation instrument that can react even at low temperatures by using micro-nano bubbles so that the above problems can be minimized were developed. And the computational fluid dynamics technique was used by ANSYS-CFX package to prepare the plan that improves the SCR system's efficiency. Simulation for the viscous flow analysis of the SCR system was executed by applying the Navier-Stokes equation to it as a governing equation. For the SCR system's shape, 3D modeling was done by using CATIA V5. SCR jet nozzle's position was checked by changing it to the intervals of 1/3, 1/2, and 2/3 from the inlet of the vent pipe to compare the SCR system's efficiency. And the number of nozzles was compared and analyzed by simulating 4, 6, and 8 holes to check an effect of the number on the SCR system's efficiency. The simulation result has found that the closer nozzles are to the inlet of the vent pipe and the more nozzles are, the more efficiency is improved.
