  • This research aimed to assess the possibility of detecting forest degradation using time-series satellite imagery and three different deep learning-based change detection techniques. The dataset used for the deep learning models was composed of two sets, one based on surface reflectance (SR) spectral information from satellite imagery, combined with Texture Information (GLCM; Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrix) and terrain information. The deep learning models employed for land cover change detection included image differencing using the Unet semantic segmentation model, multi-encoder Unet model, and multi-encoder Unet++ model. The study found that there was no significant difference in accuracy between the deep learning models for forest degradation detection. Both training and validation accuracies were approx-imately 89% and 92%, respectively. Among the three deep learning models, the multi-encoder Unet model showed the most efficient analysis time and comparable accuracy. Moreover, models that incorporated both texture and gradient information in addition to spectral information were found to have a higher classification accuracy compared to models that used only spectral information. Overall, the accuracy of forest degradation extraction was outstanding, achieving 98%.

  • A sesquiterpene was purified from Artemisia iwayomogi methanolic extract during the course of searching anti-inflammatory principle from medicinal plants. A sesquiterpene identified as armefolin inhibited the production of nitric oxide (NO) and attenuated inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) protein level in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated RAW 264.7 cells. Armefolin also down-regulated mRNA expressions of iNOS and pro-inflammatory cytokines, interleukin-$1{\beta}$ and interleukin-6 in LPS-activated macrophages. Moreover, armefolin suppressed the degradation of inhibitory-${\kappa}B{\alpha}$ (I-${\kappa}B{\alpha}$) in LPS-activated macrophages. These data suggest that armefolin from A. iwayomogi can suppress the LPS-induced production of NO and the expression of iNOS gene through inhibiting the degradation of I-${\kappa}B{\alpha}$. Taken together, armefolin from A. iwayomogi might be a candidate as promising anti-inflammatory agent.

  • Bacterial strains which degrade Arabian Light crude oil were isolated by enrichment culture from oil-spilled soil. The strain A54 was finally selected after testing emulsifying activity and oil conversion rate. Strain A54 was identified as a Acinetobacter sp. based on the morphological, biochemical and physiological characteristics. It appears to be highly specialized for growth on Arabian Light crude oil in minimal salts medium since it showed preference for oil or degradation products as substrates for growth. It was found that it could grow on at least fifteen different hydrocarbons. The optimum cultural and environmental conditions were as follows; 25$\circ$C for temperature, 7,5 for pH, 2.0% for NaCl concentration and 2.0% for crude oil concentration. Additionally, the optimal concentration of NH$_{4}$NO$_{3}$, and K$_{2}$HPO$_{4}$, were 12.5 mM and 0.057 mM, respectively. Cell growth and emulsifying activity as a function of time were also determined. Crude oil degradation and the reduction of product peaks were identified by the analysis of remnant oil by gas chromatography. Approximately 63% of crude oil were converted into a form no longer extractable by mixed organic solvents.

  • Prostaglandins biosynthesis and nitric oxide production have been implicated in the process of inflammation and osteoarthritis. And nitric oxide (NO) activated the MMPs responsible for PG degradation in articular chondrocytes. Therefore, we have studied the effects on anti-inflammation and analgesic by ethyl acetate fraction from 70% ethanol extract of Perilla Frutescens (EPF). EPF inhibited LPS plus inflammation-cytokines-induced proteoglycan (PG) degradation, matrix-metalloproteinase (MMP-2,9) expression in rabbit articular chondrocytes. Also, EPF have inhibitory effects on LPS or LPS plus inflammation cytokines-induced nitric oxide (NO) and PGE2 production in mouse macrophage andrabbit articular chondrocytes. These results suggest that EPF decreases PGE2, iNOS, MMPs activity and PG degradation in mouse macrophage and/or rabbit articular chondrocytes. In vivo, EPF was shown to have inhibitory effects on acetic acid-induced pain. The herbal extract with this profile, may have utility in the treatment of osteoarthritis.

  • $Fe_2O_3/TiO_2$ nanocomposite were successfully synthesized by co-precipitation method using $Fe(NO_3)_3{\cdot}9H_2O$ and $Ti(SO_4)_2$ as raw materials. Structural and textural features of the mixed oxide samples were characterized by X-ray diffractometer, field emission scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray. The effects of initial concentration of oxytetracycline (OTC), different competitive ions and organics on the photocatalytic degradation rate of OTC by the $Fe_2O_3/TiO_2$ nanocomposite were analyzed under UV and visible light irradiation. The results indicate that the optimized initial concentration of OTC was 50 mg/L to achieve the best photocatalytic efficiency. $Cu^{2+}$, $NH_4{^+}$, $C_3H_8O$ and EDTA in the aqueous suspension were found to suppress the degradation rate of OTC, whereas the effect of $NO_3{^-}$ and $H_2C_2O_4$ can be ignored.

  • Visible-light responsive $TiO_2$:Zr, N powders were prepared by polymer complex solution method and the particle properties were characterized by using transmission electron microscope, BET method, X-ray diffractometer and UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The photocatalytic reactivity of the catalysts was also estimated by analyzing NO degradation. Polyhedral $TiO_2$ powder having about 20 um in the average particle diameter was successfully prepared, The XRD analysis revealed that the as-prepared powder consisted of anatase and rutile phases. The light absorption of the as-prepared $TiO_2$:Zr, N powder was shifted to the visible light. In addition, the as-prepared $TiO_2$:Zr, N nanoparticles showed the higher photocatalytic activity than the commercial $TiO_2$ under both UV and visible lights.

  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa F722 produces a biosurfactant (BS) during its degradation of carbon and hydrocarbon compounds. The culture conditions for upgrading the biosurfactant productivity were investigated. The concentration of the biosurfactant produced by P. aeruginosa F722 was 0.78 g/L in C-medium; however, this increased to 1.66 g/L in BS medium, which was experimentally adjusted to optimal conditions. $NaNO_{2}$ was found to be most effective for microbial growth, with an $O.D_{600nm}$ of 1.18 for 0.1 % $NaNO_{2}$. Microbial growths, according to the $O.D_{600nm}$ were 2.53, 2.68, 2.89, and 2.87 for glucose, glycerol, $n-C_{10},\;and\;n-C_{22}$, respectively. Clear zone diameters (cm), indicating biosurfactant activity, were 9.0, 8.8, 5.7, and 8.5 for glucose, glycerol, $n-C_{10},\;and\;n-C_{22}$, respectively. Microbial growth was not consistent with the biosurfactant activity. The best biosurfactant activity was found with a C/N ratio of 20. Under optimal culture condition, the average surface tension decreased from 70 to 30 mN/m after 5 days. With aeration of 1.0 vvm, the biosurfactant produced increased to 1.94 g/L (up to 20%) compared to that of 1.66 g/L with no aeration. With aeration, the velocities of glucose degradation during both the log and stationary growth phases increased from 0.25 and $0.18\;h^{-1}$ to 0.33 and $0.29\;h^{-1}$, respectively, and the time for the culture to arrive at the maximum clear zone diameter became shorter, from 80 down to 60 h with no aeration.

  • The potential induced degradation (PID) phenomenon of crystalline silicon photovoltaic (PV) modules has been often found in outdoor PV systems until recently since firstly reported in 2010. Many studies have been conducted about the mechanism and the preventive methods, but systematic diagnosis of the PID has not been applied on-site. This paper focuses on analysis of 5 categories and 10 PID diagnosis methods using the monitoring data, light current-voltage, dark current-voltage, infrared and electroluminescence. We expect to contribute to improvement of power generation through PID diagnosis and troubleshooting in PV plants.
