  • During the last decade global sourcing has been widely practiced by multinational firms. While the importance of global sourcing has grown rapidly, there have been ralatively few empirical studies on this issue Thus, this study empirically investigates the commonalities and differences between European and Japanese multinational firms sourcing patterns. Especially, this study focuses on two dimensions of global sourcing activities: inter-firm sourcing and intra-firm sourcing.

  • This study is based on the survey data of 74 Korean multinational corporations, which undertook foreign direct investments from 1980 to 1996. The study examined the firm-specific as well as the host country-specific factors affecting the decision between shared and full ownership. According to the results of this study, as for the firm-specific factors, Korean firms entering foreign markets in order to penetrate local markets prefer shared ownership while those pursuing core business diversification prefer full ownership. As for the host country factors, the more advanced the host country(such as OECD countries) is, the more preference is given to full ownership.

  • Changes in the global business environment continue at an accelerated pace. The 21st century maybe remarked, perhaps, for its hot issues on globalization and diversity. Diversity may arise in terms of ethnic, gender, age and culture. Cultural diversity out of all stands out in front in modern times as more multinational companies operate internationally resulting more people to start living abroad and work with people from different cultures. In recent years, these multinational companies realized the important roles human resource management play in international trade since cultural diversity is very influential on their work performance. A well-managed human resources will ensure organizations' success to a great extent. This paper touches the field of cultural diversity and introduces human resource management of international trade as a way to handle diversity matters faced by international organizations.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study the problems to be solved in the marketing strategy aspect by domestic pharmaceutical industry under the competitive market circumstances with multinational pharmaceutic enterprises. The major concern has been paid to the key ideas and practical methods to be needed in strengthening the competitive marketing power of domestic pharmaceutical industry against multinational pharmaceutical enterprises. In this article, the researcher is to analyze the current situations and problems of domestic pharmaceutical industry and finally the researcher is to provide the major ideas concerning the problems to be solved in the marketing strategy aspect by domestic pharmaceutical industries.

An Exploratory Study on Common Information System Implementation Efficiency Among Overseas Subsidiaries of a Multinational Corporation (다국적 기업의 해외 자회사간 공용 정보시스템 구현 효율성에 관한 탐색적 연구)

  • Common system deployment is one of the global information systems strategies of a multinational corporation for large-scale development that can provide economies of scale and optimal use of scarce technical expertise. But while the same (headquarter) team implements the same system, the resulting efficiencies of those projects differ widely among the subsidiaries. This paper focuses on the differences between the efficiencies of these implementation projects. Eight prepropositions about the factors causing the differences have been developed from the previous research. These prepropositions are explored through a case study on the twelve overseas subsidiaries of a multinational electronic corporation headquartered in Korea. We found that three factors(autonomy of subsidiary, complexity of task, experience level of users) have strong relevant relationships and two factors(level of subsidiary country, level of process formality) have partial relevant relationships with the implementation outcome.

  • This study aims to analyze which subsidiary configuration strategy is more effective under uncertainty especially technology base multinational corporations (henceforth MNCs). In previous studies real option theory scholars argue that high breadth subsidiary configuration is most effective strategy because that provides flexibility to MNCs global network. In this study I want unveil more various types of uncertainty such as technology and learning uncertainty which are more important for technology base firm and further more examine the effect of MNCs subsidiary configuration on firm R&D performance each uncertainty case. Empirical study is performed by negative binominal model based on Japanese 108 multinational corporations. The result shows that under technology uncertainty, high breadth subsidiary configuration is better for firm R&D performance but under learning uncertainty high depth subsidiary configuration is better. Thus, the effects of MNCs subsidiary configuration on firm value can differ by types of uncertainty.

Correlation between Sales of Foreign Affiliates and Productivity of Multinational Firms: Evidence from Korean Firm-Level Data

  • Using firm-level panel data for Korean multinational enterprises (MNEs), we make a distinction between being the only affiliate of a parent firm and being one of the multiple affiliates of a parent firm. In particular, we attempt to find a correlation between the sales of foreign affiliates and the productivity of multinational firms. Our main empirical results in this paper suggest that productive Korean MNEs would enlarge the number of affiliates in the host country.

  • The main aim of the research attempts to identify value relations appropriated and realized in the coffee frontier of Vietnam by investigating the ways in which it is integrated into coffee global value chains driven by multinational companies, and to provide some implications of the integration of the frontier into sustainable coffee global value chains for creating shared value in Dak Lak, Vietnam. Recently Dak Lak has gone through the transition of value relations from exploitative value chains based upon conventional coffee production into shared value chains relied upon the production of sustainable or certified coffee in Dak Lak. The transition has been expected to result in sustainability in the creation of value by enhancing regional competitive advantages and regional bargaining power in global value chains driven by multinational companies. However, the reality has shown the intensification of hierarchical profits allocation among stakeholders such as farmer, middlemen, and multinational companies in the region. The main reasons for this could be found in two perspectives. Firstly, the formation of exclusive relations among farmers, middlemen, and processors has led to stakeholders to secure market, but resulted in the intensification of hierarchy among them in global value chain, because multinational companies could control indirectly over the farming system through exclusive middlemen. Secondly, social and ecological costs imputed by multinational companies to coffee farmers in the name of creating shared value has deteriorated the economic profits of stakeholders such as farmers and middlemen. As a result, it has led to the configuration of systematically hierarchical and subordinated global value chain in Dak Lak.

  • Somalian pirates with the onset of civil war in the early 1990s have caused a threat to international transportation. Various international organizations including the International Maritime Organization and the World Food Program are concerned about this problem. The cost of shipping is increasing and food-aid shipment is hindered by these ships are needed military escort. Since 2008, international society has deployed multinational naval vessel in the nearby Somalian sea and strengthen multinational naval operations to minimize damages from piracy.
