This study was carried out in order to improve the Mohr method for protein-nitrogen concentration determining. Existing Mohr's method takes seven hours to analyze for one sample. In order to make up for these things tried to utilize filter bag(F75, ANKOM) for sample treatment. As a result of this implementation, have saved sample loss amount and analyzing time for a quarter comparing with Mohr's method. In addition, it have gotten high efficiency through five samples hydrolyze per one trial by using ANKOM hydrolysis system with 0.5% acetic acid. Besides, had a good reproducibility for analysis results in relation to nitrogen concentration determining with Dumas methodology. Thus, new Mohr's method takes one day to analyze for 40 sample. It is more efficiency about 6 times compare with existing Mohr's method. And, this modified Mohr's method was verified that is substitutable for the existing Mohr's method in statistical analysis.
Two experiments were conducted to determine how much sodium in food could be detected using a salinity meter. First, the salinity of mixed solutions of 0 to 6% sugar, 0 to 5% oil, and 0 to 6.4% MSG in a 1% NaCl solution was measured using a salinity meter and a Mohr titration method, and the results were compared with the calculated sodium expectations. As a result, the sodium contents of the sugar solutions and MSG solutions measured using a salinity meter were lower than the expected concentrations at 2% or more and 0.8% or more, respectively (p<0.05). The salinity of the 18 HMR products was measured in the same way, and the results were then compared with the sodium contents of the nutrition facts. The average sodium content of all products measured using the salinity meter and Mohr method was 1.12 times and 1.06 times the sodium content of the nutrition facts, respectively. On the other hand, the differences between the products were significant. The correlation coefficients between the nutrition facts and salinity meter, the nutrition facts and the Mohr method, and the salinity meter and Mohr method were 0.885, 0.920, and 0.950, respectively (p<0.01).
Calculating the distribution of stresses and displacements around a circular tunnel excavated in infinite isotropic rock mass subjected to hydrostatic stress condition is one of the basic problems in rock engineering. While closed-form solutions for the distribution are known if rock masses are considered as elastic, perfectly plastic, or brittle-plastic media, a few numerically approximated solutions based on various simplifying assumptions have been reported for strain-softening rock mass. In this study, a simple numerical method is introduced for the analysis of strain-softening behavior of the circular tunnel in Mohr-Coulomb rock mass. The method can also applied to the analysis of the tunnel in brittle-plastic or perfectly plastic media. For the brittle-plastic case where closed-formsolution exists, the performance of the present method is verified by showing an excellent agreement between two solutions. In order to demonstrate the strain-softening behaviors predicted by the proposed method. a parameter study for a softening index is given and the construction of ground reaction curves is carried out. The importance of defining the characteristics of dilation in plastic analysis is discussed through analyzing the displacements near the surface of tunnel.
An anisotropic version of Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion is proposed in order to provide a strength criterion for transversely isotropic rock. The concept of fabric tensor introduced by Pietruszczak & Mroz (2001) is employed to define the friction angle and cohesion as scalar functions of the fabric tensors. The anisotroy in these two strength parameters are calculated in association with the consideration of the relative rotation between the principal stress coordinate and the principal material triad. The critical plane on which the anisotropic function maximized is found by an optimization technique based on the Lagrange multiplier method. To demonstrate the performance of the anisotropic failure criterion, conventional triaxial tests on the samples having various inclinations of weakness plane are simulated and the resulting triaxial strength and dip angle of failure plane are discussed.
Recently, the generalized Hoek-Brown (GHB) failure criterion has been actively employed in various rock engineering calculations, but the analytical form of the corresponding Mohr failure envelope is not available, making it difficult to extend the application of the GHB criterion. In order to overcome this disadvantage, this study proposes a new method to express the tangential friction angle as an explicit function of normal stress by invoking the polynomial best-fitting to the relationship between normal stress and tangent friction angle implied in the GHB failure function. If this normal stress - tangential friction angle relationship is best-fitted with linear or quadratic polynomial function, it is possible to find the analytical root for tangential friction angle. Subsequently, incorporating the root into the relationship between shear stress and tangential friction angle accomplishes the derivation of the approximate Mohr envelope for the GHB criterion. It is demonstrated that the derived approximate Mohr failure envelopes are very accurate in the entire range of GSI value.
In the course of performing the stability analysis of rock structures, there are times when the strength of the Hoek-Brown rock mass needs to be understood in terms of the internal friction angle and cohesion. In this case, the original Hoek-Brown criteion, giving the relationship between ${\sigma}_1$ and ${\sigma}_3$ at failure, have to be transformed to the corresponding Mohr envelope. A new approach to derive the Mohr envelope of the Hoek-Brown criterion is suggested in this study. The new method is based on the Londe's transformation making the stress components dimensionless. The correctness of the derivation leading to the new ${\tau}-{\sigma}$ relationship is confirmed by comparing the calculation results with the Bray's solution through a verification example.
Although Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion has limitations in that it is a linear criterion and the effect of the intermediate principal stress on failure is ignored, this criterion has been widely accepted in rock mechanics design. In order to overcome these shortcomings, the Hoek-Brown failure criterion was introduced and recently a number of 3-D failure criteria incorporating the effect of the intermediate principal stress on failure have been proposed. However, in many rock mechanics designs, the possible failure of rock mass is still evaluated based on Mohr-Coulomb criterion and most of practitioners are accustomed to understanding the strength of rock mass in terms of the internal friction angle and cohesion. Therefore, if the equivalent Mohr-Coulomb strength parameters of the advanced failure criteria are calculated, it is possible to take advantage of the advanced failure criteria in the framework of the Mohr-Coulomb criterion. In this study, a method expressing the tangential Mohr-Coulomb strength parameters in terms of the stress invariant is proposed and it is applied to the generalized Hoek-Brown criterion and the HB-WW criterion. In addition, a new approach describing the geometric meaning of the ${\sigma}_2$-dependency of failure criteria in 3-D principal stress space is proposed. Implementation examples of the proposed method show that the influence of the intermediate principal stress on the tangential friction angle and cohesion of the HB-WW criterion is considerable, which is not the case for the 2-D failure criterion.
The Hoek-Brown failure criterion for rock masses developed first in 1980 is widely accepted and has been applied in a variety of rock engineering problems including slope analyses. The failure criterion was modified over the years because rock mass strength by the original failure criterion in 1980 was overestimated. The modified failure criterion, named Generalized Hoek-Brown Failure Criterion, was proposed with a new classification called the Geological Strength Index(GSI) in 1994. Generally, Hoek-Brown failure criterion is applied in numerical analyses of rock mass behaviors using equivalent Mohr-Coulomb parameters estimated by linear regression method. But these parameters estimated by this method have some inaccuracies to be applied and to be incorporated into numerical models and limit equilibrium programs. The most important issue is that this method cannot take account of non-linear characteristics of Hoek-Brown criterion, therefore, equivalent Mohr-Coulomb parameters is used as constant values regardless of field stress distribution in rock masses. In this study, the numerical analysis on rock slope stability considering non-linear characteristics of Hoek-Brown failure criterion was carried out. Futhermore, by the latest Hoek-Brown failure criterion in 2002, the revised estimating method of equivalent Mohr-Coulomb parameters was applied and rock mass damage criterion is introduced to account for the strength reduction due to stress relaxation and blast damge in slope stability.
This study focuses on the numerical simulations of the cone penetration tests in a sand ground. The mechanical responses of sand were described using the modified Mohr Coulomb plasticity model based on the critical state soil mechanics. In the plasticity model, the dilatancy angle was not a constant, but a function of the distance to the critical state line from the current state of void ratio and mean effective stress. To simulate cone penetration tests numerically, this study relied on Lagrangian finite element method under the axisymmetric condition. To enable penetration of the cone penetrometer without tearing elements along the symmetric axis, the penetration guide concept was adopted in this study. The results of numerical simulations on the calibration chamber cone penetration tests had good agreement with the experimental results.
Determination of mobilized shear strength parameters (that identify stresses on the failure plane) is required for analyzing the stability by limit equilibrium method. Generalized Hoek-Brown (GHB) and Mohr-Coulomb (MC) failure criteria are usually used for obtaining stresses on the plane of failure. In the present paper, the applicability of these criteria for determining the stresses on failure plane is investigated. The comparison is based on stresses on the real failure plane which are obtained from the Mohr stress circle. To do so, 18 sets of data (consist of principal stresses and angle of failure plane) presented in the literature are used. In addition, the values account for (VAF) and the root mean square error (RMSE) indices were calculated to check the determination performance of the obtained results. Values of VAF and RMSE for the normal stresses on the failure plane evaluated from MC are 49% and 31.5 where for GHB are 55% and 30.5, respectively. Also, for the shear stresses on failure plane, they are 74% and 36 for MC, 76% and 34.5 for GHB. Results show that the obtained stresses and angles of failure plane for each criterion differ from real ones, but GHB results are closer to the empirical results. Also, it is inferred that results are affected by the failure envelope not real failure plane. Therefore, obtained shear strength parameters are not mobilized. Finally, a multivariable regressed relation is presented for determining the stresses on the failure plane.
